ADDED: I noticed in the forums that others have the same problem, and that there is a workaround when a unit gets stuck. My question of whether we can actively deselect the downloading of the units still stands, though.

Hi

I use only my cpu for computation (basically because the bios of my computer turns off the fan at low temperatures and when the temperature rises the fan starts up. I cannot modify this setting, and the sound is a bit annoying, so I've found out that keeping the cpu somewhat busy prevents the fan from turning off).

When running MilkyWay@home on cpu-units, I generally get two types of units: Modfit and Nbody.

Modfit run on a single core and compute just fine.

Nbody runs on 4 cores and some of them compute fine while others seem to stall and literally just get stuck for hours until I cancel them. I can tell from the fact that my cpu cools off (and the fan shuts off/restarts etc.) that it's not because the cpu is busy and just "calculates in circles" or something.

I have looked around but cannot seem to find a setting to allow only single core units to be downloaded. Is this possible, or will I have to manually cancel all 4 core units every time they download?

Yes there is click on your name in the top right corner of the page, just below the big Miklyway Boinc box, then click on Preferences for this project MilkyWay@home preferences in the middle section under Preferences. You will then see choices like this:
Run only the selected applications Milkyway@home N-Body Simulation: yes
Milkyway@home Separation: no
If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? no

The N-Body units are the multi-threaded ones you said you want while the Separation units run on a single cpu core.

Just on the topic of the 2 different CPU options, does anyone know which produces the best throughput? mt tasks or the Home separation wu's?

If no one knows, I guess I'll have to do some testing.

If a project has gpu tasks I generally do not do the cpu tasks as they are not nearly as efficient.

Thanks Mikey. I don't usually bother either but I was curious to see what credits I could push out with GPU & CPU crunching.
I gave up and went back to WCG for CPU crunching :)

I'm sure they appreciate your efforts too.
