I think the longest I have gone for uptime is around 18 days for my x86-64 hosts before noticing that a host has a kernel upgrade pending. With the Jetson Nano SBC having a locked down kernel with its development package, I have forgotten to reboot it for months. No kernel updates ever for that host. Just the normal Ubuntu 18.04 application updates which are pretty meaningless for a headless cruncher. Pretty much the same thing for the headless RPi cruncher. I update when I remember to give it a look over a VNC connection. |

I think Keith keeps pretty up to date with everything but then he's a very geeky guy and keeps on top of most things going on both within his own distro but also others, I asked him for help with a problem and he figured it out for me even though he wasn't using the same distro I am. Keith uses Ubuntu which is what Mint was made from, I also use Mint, and he is a wealth of info when you need help. I use Mint on 2 older Dell laptops that don't like Windows, and one some older desktops for the same reason but they aren't running right now. Most of my pc's only crunch, I have a desktop and a laptop that I use alot and they are still on Windows and probably will be forever as they are both on Win10. I like to connect to the diferrent pc's while sitting at my Windows based laptop or desktop and an older version of Mint let's me do that without having to replace a part, by older version I mean 19.3 and 20.1 right now so not THAT old. You have a great day too!! mikey |

Greetings, Wow! 18 days and 18 hours since my last reboot. Longest ever! Just did another kernel update today. Let's see how long I go this time. ;-) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. After doing a sudo apt update, you should follow that up with a apt list --upgradable to print out in the terminal just what packages are going to be installed when you do the sudo apt upgrade. That way you can see if any of them are the video drivers or kernel updates that will require a reboot to be enabled. Just CYA with an extra step. |

Greetings, I go MONTHS, one pc was 2 years, between reboots on some machines, they are not my every day machines and just crunch and I never use them for anything except downloading drivers etc and often that's done thru a usb stick so if the pc has a problem I just reboot, turn off the updates again and keep on crunching. Now if they have a hardware problem I will just drop in a new SSD or gpu, do any mandatory updates for hardware compatibility and keep on crunching. Of course yours and Keith's methods are much better for everyday machines. |

Hi Keith, Do you realize that you replied to my very first post in this thread? ;-) I don't use Apt for doing updates. I have an Update Manager icon on the taskbar that I deal with when there are updates. I have 5 updates right now and one has something to do with the NVIDIA driver(s) The only thing I use Apt for is looking for useful programs or whatever. :-) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? My laptop running Milkyway is running Win7 so there are no updates for it. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? Yeah once I get back into a home again, I sold mine and my new one won't be ready until Thanksgiving, I too will bring some Win 7 pc's back online that get no updates except for a 3rd party anti-virus, AVG, that never finds anything because all the pc's do is Boinc. |

Hi Mikey, I use no virus protection nor firewalls. I let my hardware do all the work for me. The VP programs have gotten too invasive with pop up notices to get one to pay more or whatever. I don't like that, so I quit using them. I'm very good at NOT clicking links in emails and whatnot that show up if I don't know where they came from or where they're going to. I just banish them. lol ;-) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Hi Siran, I alway forget you are using Mint. I dislike the Update Managers because they install updates behind the scenes and you don't know what they are installing normally. I like to know beforehand what is going to be installed so I don't get bit in the arse. |

I have to admit I do not use any AV program on my Linux pc's but I don't do anything except Boinc on them, but I too hate the popups on the windows pc's and wish Windows still supported Win7 for there free one. |

Greetings, Oh boy!!! I started a Linux firmware update and a problem had risen. I had BOINC shut down when doing said update. Here's the information from the Update Manager: 05.06@11:34 ++ Update Manager is in tray mode, performing recurring refresh 05.06@11:34 ++ Starting refresh (retrieving lists of updates from remote servers) 05.06@11:34 ++ Found 1 software updates 05.06@11:34 ++ Refresh finished 05.06@11:34 ++ Recurring refresh will happen in 0 day(s), 1 hour(s) and 59 minute(s) 05.06@11:46 ++ Install requested by user 05.06@11:46 ++ Will install linux-firmware 05.06@11:46 ++ Ready to launch synaptic (synaptic:762022): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 11:46:14.253: gtk_widget_hide: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed 05.06@11:55 ++ Return code:0 05.06@11:55 ++ Install finished 05.06@11:55 ++ Starting refresh (local only) 05.06@11:55 ++ System is up to date 05.06@11:55 ++ Refresh finished Should I just wait for the update to come back through or is there something I can do to resolve this? Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, I'm not sure it's a real problem because according to this you aren't using that feature anyway: "You haven't initialized preferences_view yet, and you never initialize main_view. That's where your second and third errors are coming from: gtk_container_add() is complaining that the widget you are trying to add is not actually a widget, but rather null, because you haven't initialized that variable yet." https://stackoverflow.com/questions/66829551/gtk-container-add-assertion-gtk-is-widget-widget-failed |

Greetings, Hi Mikey, My error does not start with "gtk_container_add:", Mine starts with "gtk_widget_hide:". I did a search on mine with "gtk_widget_hide: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed" and found only one reference to it with out an explanation or resolution. Besides, the thread starter was having issues with Synaptic and he's running a 32bit system. My issue is with the Update Manager and an error which did not allow the firmware update to succeed. All firmware updates in the past have always succeeded. I believe I'll just wait for the update to show back up or for the next firmware update. Almost 10 days after I first tried to make this post, I finally get to post it. Woohoo! :-) Thanks and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Is your Mint Update Manager actually a wrapper around Synaptic? Confused why your error message says it is ready to launch Synaptic. In Ubuntu the Update Manager is a standalone application and the same for Synaptic. They are not related and neither invokes the other. What happens when you use Synaptic to do the update and get your firmware update via that application instead of using the Update Manager? |

Is your Mint Update Manager actually a wrapper around Synaptic? Confused why your error message says it is ready to launch Synaptic. Hi Keith, I searched for this and cannot find anything on Mint Update Manager being a wrapper for Synaptic. Mint Update Manager is its own app installed from Synaptic; actually installed during Linux Mint installation. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with Synaptic, unless it is updating Synaptic with the updates after updating the apps, if you know what I mean. ;-) I have not tried to use Synaptic for updates/upgrades. Sadly I will always show errors since I have many tasks that were stranded by the database crash a while back. Unless they scrub the database completely clean and start fresh, I will always have task errors. |
