Message 71915 - Posted: 10 Mar 2022, 14:38:18 UTC

Just wanted to make a thread for those of us here temporarily while WCG is moved to chat.

I wanted to point out that WCG has posted a couple of articles worth reading while down.

How is everyone doing? The MW project has been going up and down a bit since we got here, but has everyone got it running ok besides that?
Any questions?

Being the badge hound I am, I'll show off my 100k star badge.

With the outage here at MW, I've now added einstein as a backup project to my backup project.

I've added Einstein as a backup to the MilkyWay backup project. The MilkyWay project seems to be doing better, but it is still hit or miss if they can send me enough WUs to keep my one slow machine busy. Einstein has some Arecibo WUs right now that remind me of the good old days on Seti.

Hopefully we can go back to WCG soon.

Well WCG friends. I'm sure you've seen the latest update. I knew we would get a delay, but it is a bit longer than I expected. I'm glad MilkyWay is running well right now, and can use the next two weeks of our CPUs and GPUs until May 9.

I went looking for an update from WCG and found this on twitter. So I thought I would share the info.

New update from WCG -

We are currently facing unexpected issues with the load balancer - a small but critical component that ensures science servers will cope with increased workloads. If not resolved on time, it would prevent us from restarting on May 9th. We will provide an update tomorrow evening.

With the potential influx of people that could be critical!!

Yup, and I also seem to recall that the IBM-managed WCG had load-balancer problems on a few occasions, so it's probably as well that Krembil get in some advanced experience in this area :-)

Cheers - Al.

P.S. Thank you, unixchick, for keeping us up to date with the social media posts :-)

New Update from WCG -

Unfortunately, we must now conduct further testing starting tomorrow to confirm that the system is ready. We continue to work on this tonight and we aim to update you tomorrow [May 9th, 2022] with the revised start date for the WCG, unless we run into some unexpected challenges.

Well that's a bummer. Will you and your crew be staying on then? You got honorable mention over here: https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=4881&postid=73415#73415

I wouldn't say my crew. I'm just a noisy member of the WCG group. I have no idea how many from WCG are here, but I'm guessing many will stay until WCG is back up. I anticipate that things will be rocky over at WCG for a bit, so I'll definitely keep MW as my backup project.

I'm glad that MW is working well now, and that we got a chance to make use of the cycles we couldn't give to WCG. Thanks you to the many regulars in this project that answered our questions and chatted.

Latest update...

We were able to address the issues we were facing.
As we are now able to continue with testing the system we plan to reassess the earliest WCG restart date we can commit to by Thursday evening (May 12th), when we will post an updated schedule to social media and to the website.

Hmm I might have a go at WCG, I have some extra CPU cycles I could throw at it.

I would guess they would have limited tasks available as they slowly ramp up to full capacity to ensure everything is okay going forward.

Thats fine, I could spin up a 4 node cluster and task it to 8 of the xeon cores, if it ramps up the power will be there, if not no loss.

I haven't seen any updates from WCG, so I'm assuming Tuesday May 24 is still the return date.

MW is having issues again, so I'm back to doing Einstein WUs for now.

Almost there -- Facebook update
~~~
"WCG is almost ready to restart.
QA testing has finally successfully finished and all the bugs have been resolved. Production environment is being tested right now.
Considering the unexpected issues we ran into with the QA system, we prefer to test it a couple of days further. The website and forum are ready to be relaunched, the production environment is successfully querying BOINC locally and we are going to restart BOINC slowly in the next few days.
We will provide further details in the next few days."
