I'm hoping WCG will put up the website and forums soon, even if they are still testing the WU send and receive stuff for a couple more days. So far nothing....They should just say we will try again next Tuesday. It wouldn't be a good idea to bring the system back online on a Friday. Glad MW is up and working well right now, so my machine can do something. |

There are LOTS of other projects that would LOVE to have your computers crunch tasks for them!! I think the reason we crunch WUs is because we get attached to a particular project. It was Seti@home that got me started doing this. When seti finished it was real hard for me to find a new place to crunch as I like a place with a chatty forum as well as an interesting project. I was happy doing ARP (African Rainfall Project) at WCG and I know they have a limited amount of data to crunch and I'd like to see that project to the end. I'm enjoying my time at MW, and I will keep this as my backup project, and Einstein will be my backup to the backup as MW isn't the most stable. I don't expect WCG to be stable when it comes back either. I'm not sure what I will do once ARP ends. I'm not attached to the other projects at WCG, so hopefully they will bring on some new projects. |

There are LOTS of other projects that would LOVE to have your computers crunch tasks for them!! I agree with you on most of your points, I too have crunched WCG's ARP tasks as well as all of their tasks, I actually have 2 accounts over there but unfortunately I can't list the Projects I've participated in until they come back up again. Here is a list of all the Boinc projects, and their applications, that were available to run in the last 24 hours showing the number of tasks that were crunched by each https://wuprop.boinc-af.org/active_projects.py as you can see there are LOTS and LOTS of choices out there!! |

Thanks for the good list of active boinc projects. I'll save the link for when I need it. Right now MW with an Einstein backup is good enough as I'm still hoping for WCG to come back online. I'm attached to ARP. I probably need to look at LHC (from your list), as that sounds interesting. I'm disappointed that WCG aren't back by now. I loved the openness and communication they gave us in the beginning, but now I'm worried about the amount of admin devoted to the project and/or the skill of the new admin to manage the WCG going forward. I'm also disappointed in how many of their own deadlines they blew through. I expected issues to make them unable to meet their first deadline, but hoped they would make the second one...and thought for sure they would make this last one, but alas we haven't had any communication since, just the promise of further communication with a date of opening. Is anyone from the user community helping them with testing?? It would give me hope that they have gotten past internal testing. let me know if anyone has any hopeful information on the project. edit: I thought they would update us this week... now I see this "We will provide further details early next week." Was this an edit on their part?? or did I misread it earlier? |

I too hope it was an edit but am not confident they have enough resources thrown at the Project to get it up and running in any way near it's prior form. There were thousands and thousands of users prior to it shutting down at IBM, if they can't handle at least that many coming back from the start they are in very big trouble!! A friend told me just today that there could be only one Admin doing all the work and we are both HOPING they are not the only one doing the testing!! |

Mikey, Regarding testing, I'd love to know whether Krembil had to develop their own process validation tools and procedures or whether WCG comes with a complete set of such things... I suspect the former, and I also suspect that some of the technology in use was completely new to them. One of the things I hope they'll do once back on line is give us some sort of basic information about their WCG team (which might give an insight into how many of the folks involved are also Mapping Cancer Markers people!) -- I recall the IBM WCG team being "introduced" at some point... Cheers - Al. |

Mikey, I sure hope you are correct but did see a post by someone saying that only ONE person from the IBM Team went to the new location to work there. One would think that IBM did a Server wide backup that could then be installed onto the new Server location and then do some tweaking and be right back where they were before. Of course if the new Servers are THAT different from the old ones or the new location doesn't have the resources that could be some of the problems they are working thru. Having to install the Boinc Server side stuff from scratch is not for the faint of heart or the clueless, ie 'oh I know computers' but has no clue about how Boinc works and all the different places in the coding where changes must be made when changing something as simple as how much credit we get for a task. |

Thanks Mark for the confirmation. I must say that none of this info is giving me much hope. When they do get it up and working I will go back and suffer through the ups and downs as I would like to see ARP finish. It is a shame that they had to deal with this interruption to their project, and if fewer people come back either because they found new projects, or because the new system is too unstable, then they will need my computer all the more. In MW news... I'll probably get my 500k badge here before being back at WCG. |

latest update from WCG We were unable to bring our production environment to the same state as the QA environment this week. As we also have yet to resolve an issue that prevents BOINC clients from downloading workunits, the effort to bring the Grid back online has stretched into next week. |

latest update from WCG Do they even know there is a set of Boinc Admin email groups? This link should get them started: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/EmailLists The User Richard Haselgrove https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_user.php?userid=470398 can help them get to the right people too, he is currently in-charge of the Boinc Beta software email group and works with both the Boinc Developers and Admins on a regular basis. |

I'd be surprised if they're unaware -- at least one of the IBM WCG folks was active in the developer environment, and if IBM didn't brief Krembil on support mechanisms (such as they are) that would have been bad form!latest update from WCG Anyway, it's always possible that the problems they're having are actually infrastructure issues rather than BOINC itself; if that's the case they're probably pretty much on their own :-( Hopefully the apparent thoroughness of their test efforts (even when not initially successful) bodes well for the state of the system when it does eventually surface. Only time wlll tell, and I fear they're going to lose many of their less enthusiastic users the longer it takes to re-start :-( Cheers - Al. P.S. I'm currently having fun trying to understand basic BOINC server code for a variety of reasons. It's not as bad as one of our more vociferous posters would have us believe; in fact, it should have good reliability provided it isn't "abused" by extreme conditions (e.g. database problems because of disk issues [here] or system overload [SETI@Home in its later days.] That's one of the reasons I suspect Krembil issues are not with the basic functionality... |

I posted the link to the boinc admin group to their twitter announcement. Thanks Mikey. Maybe it is snotty of me to post it, maybe it is helpful. I hope they can get some temporary help to get them up and running. |

FYI - They posted a new message to the website. They did not post on twitter yet. They are working on issues with signing up new people and communication if I read that right. It has been so long, I just wish they would just open up to us current members. Who all is interesting in them communicating on Insta and YouTube ?? I would be happy with a working forum myself, but I guess I'm just old and boring. I've lost my optimism. They will be back some day. I'll do some ARP, but it is getting hot here, so I'll not be doing alot until it cools down again. Maybe they won't be back until it is cool again, so it won't be an issue. bleh. |

They better let us bring our old accounts with us or they will lose alot of people who were close to their badges, or bigger badges, and won't like the idea of starting all over again!! |
