Even Aqua has its own favicon now. We're down with the likes of orbit now in our lack of favicon-ness. :(

I think this is getting overlooked or ignored.

Indeed, I guess so too. :-(
Does anyone know if and how it is possible to customize your browser yourself this way?

Maybe this part of the website is under the control of a different undergrad who is getting his grade-forgiveness papers in order.

Oh, but then I expect you can't have a favicon in a subdomain, or can you?

Googling tells me that you can; put the following link in your html pages between the "head" tags.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/subfolder/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

Most web browsers look for a file called favicon.ico in the root of the site. In this case, it'd be at http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/favicon.ico, but that location can be different by adding an HTTP header described by Ice.

As for what it's for, it's for that icon that Firefox puts in the address bar to the left of the URL. I believe most other browsers put it near the same place, and they also usually go into Bookmarks.

EDIT: Small typo. ;-)
