I am hoping someone will be kind enough to offer some advice to a linux newbie and be prepared for some probable stupid question. I have installed the Boinc from the applications add/remove window. That installed 5.10.45 I think it was. Then I got the latest 6.4.5 version of boinc from here:- I have found the BOINC file but have no idea where I need to drop the newly compiled clients. Thanks for reading and sorry for the dumb questions. Neal |

I am also a Linux noob, but I found that looking through these pages helped me to get things set up and working I don't know what flavour of Linux you have, but you should find something on one of these: Installing BOINC on Linux Installing BOINC on Ubuntu Gentoo, Fedora and Debian shortcuts here You need to extract the optimized clients to the folder /BOINC/projects/milkyway HTH |

Ok, first you shut down the boinc-client (in the Boinc Manager select Advanced > Shut down sconnected Client), then open <yourhomefolder>/BOINC/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway and put the files from the zip there. Then you restart the boinc-client by executing <yourhomefolder>/BOINC/run_client . mic. mic. |

... I have found the BOINC file but have no idea where I need to drop the newly compiled clients. Thanks for reading and sorry for the dumb questions. If BOINC is installed via Synaptic package manager (Ubuntu), the project directory should be found under var/lib/boinc-client. Then open the projects' directory and there has to be a folder called milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway. That's the correct folder to put the new optimized Linux app for Milkyway into. ;-) EDIT: I see I was too lame. *grin* And of course speedimic is right: always shutdown BOINC before switching the apps or doing anything similar. ;-) Lovely greetings, Cori |

No luck so far. Can't find any of the folder mentioned which to be honest is probably me. I open the Home folder then have to open a folder called SRC. Once in there I get the BOINC folder of which I can't find a projects folder at all and I have checked them all. I'm running ubuntu 8.4. It's a clean install from Vista which I hate so if a different version will make it easier I'm willing to wipe it as I have nothing on it. Thanks again people, I appeicate(sp) it |

Did you have a look at var/lib/boinc-client/projects? I have Ubuntu, too and that's the place where the projects' directories can be found usually. ;-) Lovely greetings, Cori |

Did you have a look at var/lib/boinc-client/projects? he's using 6.4.5 - that's not the one provided by ubuntu, so the project files should be somewhere inside <HomeFolder>/BOINC/ mic. |

sledgehammer to crack a nut time :-) type the following sudo find / -name milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway and give it the root password, it will then find your milkyway folder STOP BOINC copy the unzipped (or untared) files from speedimics download into that folder start boinc thats normally all that is needed |

Could we rename this thread How to install the new optimised clients because the method is the same for Linux/Windows/OSX, the only thing that changes is the install directory Common project directories are Windows C:\Program Files\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway Linux ~/BOINC/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway OSX ~/BOINC/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway Whichever OS you have OS, you copy the contents of the zip/tar file into one of those directories. stop boinc copy the files start boinc |

Ok, getting somewhere now. I have found the boinc folder and the projects folder. The trouble I have now is that the projects folder has an red X next to it and it says when I try and open it that I don't have the permissions to open it. I have made sure that boinc isn't running. What should I try next please? Many thanks for your time and patieance. |

Typical, first computer takes a day and the second one 3 minutes. That's the learning process. :-) A day, heh, that's nothing. There are things I'll work on for a week before getting it right. I downloaded the Linux 64 bit SSE3 optimized client, unzipped the files, and stuck them in the Milkway folder. Every WU that has run instantly fails due to computation error, and this is the error it leaves in the Task Details: "<core_client_version>6.2.14</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> process exited with code 22 (0x16, -234) </message> <stderr_txt> execv: No such file or directory </stderr_txt> ]]>" What file or directory is it talking about? |

I downloaded the Linux 64 bit SSE3 optimized client, unzipped the files, and stuck them in the Milkway folder. Every WU that has run instantly fails due to computation error, and this is the error it leaves in the Task Details: I had the same problems...you need to set the permissions for the opt app file and allow it to be executed. Look in the permissons tab and set it for boinc and boinc-client. That should solve the problem... Click to help Seti City. |

There is no MilkyWay Linux application for ATI. If you wish to use Linux you must process tasks on the CPU or use a Compute Capability 1.3 NVIDIA card (Geforce GTX 260/275/280/285/295) with Linux 64-bit. If you wish to use an ATI card you must install Windows. |
