Hey guys.. I just built up this sweet machine, AMD quadcore phenom 2 and...im not a gamer. So I was thinking what better way to use the machine I built than to donate it to something such as this.

Any good tweaks out there I should know about to make bionic better, i only just started with it today.

you'll want an optimized app to start with.

What OS are you running?

Go here and download CPU-Z. Run it and see what Instruction Sets your processor can run and report back what they are. I'm not sure what a Phenom can do off the top of my head.

According to AMD spec docs, Phenom II (2) offers SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4a.

So the best opt app would be the SSE3 version for 32 bit Windows...

OK, what Gavin said. go here and download the SSE3 windows optimized app. There are instructions on that site also to tell you how to install it.

Post back if you have any questions and welcome to BOINCdom.

Hello,

Another newbie on this project.

- just joined the project with 1 computer
- just read the forum and found zslip
- just installed this opt. app (0.16: latest ?)
- My Q6600 under xp32 is now crunching a WU in around 6 min.

I just would like a confirmation about the credit:

Here for example: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=2584909

Granted credit is 7x claimed credit... normal ?

Thanks for info

Cheers

What would be the best version for 64 bit Windows with the same cpu?

Probably the SSE3 Win 32bit build at ZSlip. To the best of my knowledge the only 64bit opt. app for Win is actually a GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) based one for certain ATI video cards.

I wish I had an appropriate ATI card... *drool*

But concerning the 'normal' app for CPUs maybe you can also crunch with the SSSE3 opti app. My C2D lappy (Win XP 64-bit) is capable of SSE3 and SSSE3 for example.
But don't trust what the BOINC Manager tells you, if I had believed in that I'd be still crunching with SSE2 only! *LOL*

The AMD Phenom II or Phenom 2 only has SSE, SSE2, SSE3 & SSE4a. They do not support SSSE3 or SSE4.1/4.2. Those are Intel chips only. My C2D systems run SSSE3 but the AMD Phenom II that was being asked about only has up to the SSE3 option.

This information came direct for the technical documents at AMD's website. Not Boinc or the OS.

You're right, I overlooked that the question was about the Phenom II. ;-)

My answer was more general because BOINC doesn't report CPU features very accurate.
At least for Intels. *grin*
