I got a new 3850 Graphics card today and it's crunching along nicely. The question I have is this. Is it normal for it to now only use 50% or less of the CPU power?

Thanks in advance

Yes it is normal. Just crunch another project on the CPU alongside MW on the GPU if you want use the full potential of your system.
The goal is to reduce the used CPU resources in the future.

I'm crunching GPUGRID on a Core 2. BOINC manager tells me the GPUGRID WU is running with 0.03 CPUs and 1 CUDA. With the other 1.97 CPUs I have a CPDN Climate and a MilkyWay WU crunching.

I'm guessing this is going to change depending on how many cores are crunching MW. At the momemt I have 8 processes of 'Running (0.50% CPU's) going at the moment. To be honest I'm still happy even if it's not right, lol.

The number displayed in the "Status" column is an estimate and not a real reflection of the reality. The only way to know that is to use task manager to monitor the real usage.

I don't have an ATI card yet so cannot speak to the actual loads of the applications here, but, the SaH and GPU Grid load on the CPU is typically 1% or less for almost the entire run time. Fluctuations for GPU grid rarely rise above 3% while SaH has some start up "spin up" that seems to take 100% (or near to it) for about 60 seconds at the start of the task.

We are still waiting on improved monitoring tools and addition of ATI recognition in the client ... I sent the information on GPU detection I found for Nvidia, ATI and OpenCL to the developers, but as usual no acknowledgement if it is what they needed/wanted or if it was a complete waste of my time ...

Anyway, good luck ... happy GPUing ...

I'm sorry if I am off base, but my ATI machine is down at the moment, so I can't properly test this... my box with a 3870 in is a Core2Quad, so I am assuming the BOINC app will try to run 4 units at once, will this still properly use the vid card, or will it cause problems? I'd just like to know before I try running it on that machine, thanks. :)

Hello!
Is it possible to crunch with GPU and CPU at the same time and how?

Yes, I'm doing it with a Core 2. The GPU takes 0.01 to 0.03 of a core and either one or two other projects also crunch, CPDN and MW. Sometimes CPDN or MW goes into 'Waiting to run' leaving the other to crunch with GPU. I'm not sure why one has this occassional rest.

Thanks for your answer!
But how can I add MW-CPU-WUs to the BOINCmanager? I have 16 GPU-tasks running, but BONIC won´t get MW-WUs for the CPU.

Try suspending all your GPU tasks, then resume/add the MW. Then resume the GPU tasks.

If this fails, try suspending all GPU tasks, detach MW, attach to MW, exit and add the optimizer files and restart BOINC manager, and then resume the GPU tasks.

As Ice has said, you can run other CPU projects alongside the GPU MW app.

I suspect though that you want to run CPU MW alongside GPU MW.
As it comes, the GPU MW app only allows MW to run on the GPU, you would have to edit app_info.xml to allow MW to run on the CPU.

I don't know if that's possible or how to do it if it is possible :/

Got my birthday coming up in April and was thinking of asking for another graphics card. Now I was wondering is there a massive difference in proformance in the 3800 series of cards and the 4800?

Cheers guys.

As I'm crunching I do not yet see any WU being worked by my GPU (Nvidia/Apple 8800GT). Is it because the MW application is not yet compatible with GPU on the mac, or that Boinc is not ready yet for GPU crunching on the mac? Or that Apple/Nvidia are dragging their @ss in offering an updated driver for the system?

Nvidia cards will work on CUDA for Seti but you need an ATI card for milkyway.

If thats wrong someone will point it out hopefully.

Yeah the only current GPU app for milkyway is Cluster Physik's which uses ATI cards. We're working on one for Nvidia.

As soon the Nvidia is ready I'm up for testing it on my 9600M GT.

And I don't think that the SETI CUDA is available for Macs yet either.

Quite massive actually, the 4800 series is about 2.5 times as fast as the 3800 series. ATI has increased the amount of shader units tremendeously between those two generations.

In the moment it is not possible. It is either MW on GPU or MW on CPU. But you can crunch another project on the CPU when MW uses the GPU.

To run MW simultaneously on the GPU and the CPU would require some changes to the application, which don't have a high priority in the moment. If you really want it now, you can still set up one or more virtual machines crunching MW on the CPU and let one core left to run the MW GPU app on the host system.
