The flight path of my Heart Of Gold (HOG to the bikers) has been an interesting trajectory;

2 March (13 days ago) RAC 50,000

3 March (12 days ago) RAC 61,000

4 March (11 days ago) RAC 72,000

5 March (10 days ago) RAC 83,000

8 March ( 7 days ago) RAC 100,000

11 March (4 days ago) RAC 120,000

15 March (today) RAC 135,000

and I do believe it's still rising, and as such normality has not yet been achieved.

That's just cool and froody ;)

It's tricky to get that script working I expect. But then the real trick is to get it to pound that 'update' button qucker than a human finger can. Even if it's The Big Finger Giant.

I think with your help and possibly others this project could get a good setup or two. There seems to be a steady rate of new users so the current setup is bound to get full.
I imagine so.

It's getting to the point that some of the better desktop-grade drives (e.g. WD Raptors) have speed and reliablility (MBTF) even somewhat comparable to server-grade drives, and it's only fairly recently that SATA drives are finding any application in servers.

For a surplus server selling for the kind of money we want to spend, we're going to have to use SCSI-interface drives. This isn't a bad thing, as they are high-performance and the interface offloads the controller and CPU in a way that SATA never will. And, like the server hardware, they're made to stand up to the kind of abuse that this kind of application would subject them to.

The good news is that the drives themselves are fairly available on the surplus market, even in new condition. And they're available at a small fraction of their original price. Even at that, they're going to always be expensive compared to desktop-grade drives.

Server-grade drives with a spindle speed of 15,000 RPM aren't at all uncommon. That's nowhere near the whole story, though. The SATA and PATA interfaces used on desktop-grade drives are fairly CPU intensive (sort of like a winmodem), while the SCSI interface used on most server-grade drives operates at a much higher level, with most of the "housekeeping" done locally on the drive (sort of like an external modem).

I imagine that, in the absence of an unlimited supply of WUs, they all bailed.

I think that I'm proof positive that one can care about credit, bt not be obsessed with it.

Are Solid State drives worth while yet?

IMNSHO, not in a server, but maybe in a laptop.

... and only a day later I have RAC 142,000
With a bit of luck I'll be back in the top 20 again.

That's just cool and froody ;)
