Sorry about that. So, I should have MW results in a week to ten days, depending on when I get the new MW test started.

No need to apologize, especially considering the circumstances. Hope everything is OK with your family.

We appreciate your efforts. Another week or two won't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for understanding.

I hope to be running a MW test soon. (As I understand it, you had some recent problems anyway, so it is probably just as well that this happened when it did.)

Anyway, the longer range plan, after this test is done, is to run SETI optimized vs. MW optimized, head to head. on my Quad for a month. Each with a 50% share and no other projects involved. Which, I figure, ought to tell the tale so far as my original question about crunchers' whose main interest is credit vs. science is concerned. :o)

RE: my next test with optimized apps: My plan is to use the MW apps on Anton's little site (assuming he doesn't delete them out of spite) vs the AKV8 SSSE3x for SETI. If there are better apps for my Q6600 machine, please let me know. This follow-up test is intended to be best-muscle against best-muscle on a more-or-less ordinary machine. But i am not a computer person so any help in making things nasty but with an equally nasty playing field appreciated.

(Note: when the time comes, I will be consulting Lunatics for the best possible kick-ass SETI apps, so, I want the best possible MW apps to run them against.)

My apologies to you, Misfit, if my statement somehow bothered you. Sometimes rather nasty experiences can cloud even the most level headed person’s perceptions of things, and I have never been particularly level headed!

I employ a very simple equation: my respect for people is directly proportional to how they treat me.

Do not assume that you know the entire story if you have only heard one side of it.

Whatever else you may be, you are at least mildly amusing.

My original question stands: I know where to find the best apps for SETI, what are the best apps for MW?

No probs if they are deleted, all of the optimised MW apps are by Gipsel and he has them available. Or even better, download them from zslip now for future use.

It's a shame nobody also has a spare AMD system that they can run the same tests on to see how AMD and Intel compare. Some apps run better on AMD and some on Intel (MW opt apps run better on both than anything else, of course, and SETI opt ap runs twice as fast on Intels as it does on AMD at the same core speed).

From what I've heard the stock app performs quite well on AMD hardware.

I have some data for AMDs in comparison to Intel for the optimized apps. Because of the use of the instruction set extensions one has to distinguish between CPUs with 128Bit SSE units (Core2, Phenom and Core i7) and the slower ones with 64Bit SSE units (Core, A64, Athlon64 X2) and the really slow ones not supporting SSE2 at all (P3, AthlonXP).

From my systems the performance relations (per core at the same clock) look as follows (Athlon 64 is base):

Athlon64/X2 : 1
Phenom (65nm): 1.74
Core2 (65nm) : 1.85
PhenomII (45nm): 1.85
Core2 (45nm) : 2.4
Core i7 (2 threads summed): 3.35 <- HT helps a lot here

Cancelling the test for now because there are very few WU’s flowing from MW at the moment.

Going to crunch other, sadly neglected, projects for a bit get back to MW in a week or so. Maybe there will be a better flow of work then.

Sorry.

I don't have a "spare" working right now, though I have parts to make a BE2300 (AMD X2) I could put together. Or I might be willing to dedicate my main box (an Opteron 170) to the task. I think Cluster Physik has a pretty good handle on it, though.

The other thing is, it would have to be on my Opty if I'm going to run XP, because I don't have a copy to spare. The BE2300 would have to be running linux.
