Several mates in my team & myself have suffered the same problem this week.

The laptops swiched off by itshelf.
We think that this began when starting to use milky optimized.

Does anybody have the same problem?

Which operating system? Did it happen yesterday but not during easter? Maybe your systems have applied the latest microsoft patches that were released two days ago.

BTW which optimized client are you using?

Sounds like it's overheating.

It depends on how long you started using the laptop for distributed projects, how old the laptop is in total and how dusty it is where you keep the machine,

I agree with Dune, the first ting is to clean out the heat sinks and other gubbins for the laptop. A compressor in one of the slots should do the trick.
Go away, I was asleep

I have two diferent laptops, one old with Windows XP and the other with Vista.
The Vista one is completely new, it has been working for BOINC for one month without problems.

So it is very strange that both computers, being so differents, switched off the same day. An also the same week that other mate of my team has the problem.

It happened yesterday to me.

The optimized client is from this page:
http://zslip.com/

One is running 0.19 SSE, and the other 0.19 SSE3

Thanks for the info. Maybe it is caused by the patches that you have mentioned. Are these patches for both operating systems?

I've never felt that laptops are up to the job of crunching on a continual basis. And while I'm not sure about whether they are for both OSs, I can say that by their very nature the will tend to use more processor power causing heat building.

I do know that my wife uses this mat that the laptop sits on. It plugs into a USB port on the laptop powering two or more fans. This could be your ticket to your dilemma.

Mi teammate says that he cancelled milky wus and the problem continued, so it is not coming from optimized clients.

He also intalled the new patches, so they are becoming strong candidates to be guilty.....

Yeah, I'd say it's Windows updates, since my wife's Vista laptop did the same last night after updating Windows yesterday afternoon. And it's not running MilkyWay. Also it has happened on previous updates some months ago...

That clears a mini-mystery for me. I noticed both my PC's had restarted the other day, cursed them both then connected them to the net & wondered why the restart? Thought it mught have been updates, now I'm pretty sure.

Your computer restarted due to the patch installation, it shouldn't happen again. The restart finished the patch installation just as it does when installing most OS patches. If it keeps restarting, its most likely not the patches that are causing it. ( I could be wrong, nobody is perfect)Its sometimes not possible to uninstall OS patches.

My lap top and my son's laptop seem to have been rebooting a lot lately with loads of updates. Neither of them have BOINC installed.

I found the updates used to do/change things they didn't say they were going to. I usually do manual updates on any program so I know what is being installed. And also everytime the computer boots up they all want to check for updates and ties the memory down. New Norton's I put on it gives the option to check every xx seconds up to 15 minutes at the longest.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

This laptop has been crunching for four years non-stop. I clean the vents about every six months or so...

I have 2 laptops crunching. One had its fan die recently (no other damage) and is working fine again. To keep them as cool as possible, just try to allow for as much airflow underneath as possible. I also got good results from undervolting. Reduced the core temps on my C2M T7300 by around 10 degrees C, and on my old Pentium M by around 30 degrees C (from mid 80s to mid 50s).

I guess it's more of a personal preference with me.

Congrats on that! And nice little farm too!
