Message 20347 - Posted: 24 Apr 2009, 18:14:16 UTC - in response to Message 20339.

I had a fresh install of Windows so I had to download BOINC again (6.6.20).

Did you:

- Install your motherboard chipset drivers?
- Install DirectX 9.0c?
- Make sure your BOINC isn't throttling (Use at most 100% CPU)?

Since the mobo didn't come with the CD (refurbished from Gigabyte), I went to their site and downloaded the audio drivers. The only other drivers available for download were for a LAN & SATA controller, both of which XP covered. I'll recheck for other chipset downloads, but everything seems to be working fine, except MW GPU. The CPU version runs with no problem on the machine.

I upgraded DirectX 9.0c to 10.0 for XP. I didn't think that would hurt since I was getting the errors also on 9.0c. I also downloaded .Net 2.0 & 3.5; shouldn't be a problem.

The local preferences are set to use 100% CPU, but I don't see where this would cause an "output file absent" message.

Thanks for the input.

There is a DirectX 10 for XP? Not from Microsoft...

The GPU app still runs in normal memory, it will only execute the tasks in the GPU. All checkpointing and such is still done on disk, so throttling BOINC will have an impact.

Don't know where I got it, but I just Googled DirectX 10 and found it.

Yes, that's a hacked version, not supported by MS. it can have the strangest of artifacts. And to be honest, judging from some of the pictures I saw, it doesn't make things look better... worse even. ;-)

Yep, I believe that's the place I got it from. From the picture of Flight Simulator, DirectX 10.0 appeared to have a clear advantage over 9.0. Thanks for the info.

DirectX 10 will work with Vista or higher.
XP can only go to version 9.0c.

Just ignore what I just said. I saw the site in question. I would personally avoid this...

In fact I am happy I never got Vista.
Anyone knows for sure when Windows7 will come out?
MS has stopped the DL of the BETA W7 so does it means it's almost ready to get released on the shelves?

@ Martin

I have the Cat 8.12 hotfix on my machine plus 0.19e SSE2 opti app. I just can't successfully complete a WU on the HD3850 AGP card without the "output file absent" message. Thanks for the help.

Well I've uninstalled the Cat 8.12 hotfix drivers, deleted everything that had ATI attached to it, uninstalled BOINC 6.6.20 and then reinstalled all. I've received different messages (somewhat), but same results:

Any new ideas would be appreciated. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a Gigabyte 754 mobo with an AMD 3400+ chip which is SSE2 capable and the card is a Sapphire HD3850 AGP card. This sure has been educational. Thanks.

Well I tried to go back to the 0.19 optimized CPU app (SSE2) and lo & behold, I get the same error message as the GPU app:

So back to the basics. Have you really *completely* shut down BOINC as you copied the files to the MW-folder? Copied both the app_info.xml and the executable (or in case of the GPU app also the brook.dll)? Or have you edited the app_info.xml and made a mistake (spelling error in the appplication name or something like that).

Well I shut down BOINC completely, used task manager to insure nothing with the word BOINC was running, moved the stock CPU app to a backup folder, copied the 0.19e ATI GPU app file from Zslip (4, including the readme file), restarted BOINC, and the 5 WUs I had cached errored out. I expected that (BTW, I copied the ATI app 0.19e SSE2). When restating BOINC, I get this for Milkyway:

Yes. Are you asking me to revert to 9.0c? I got the same errors on 9.0c.

I had the Cat 9.4 hotfix on this machine and renamed the 3 files - aticalcl, dd, & rt to the corresponding amd files in another folder and copied them to the system32 folder. Same error messages. I then uninstalled & deleted everything that had the ATI name on it in every folder & reinstalled the Cat 8.12 hotfix. There were no longer any aticalcl, dd, or rt files in the system32 folder. Are there any issues with this? Thanks.
