Sorry to bother you again, would 6.6.28 for Windows x86 be all right? Or should I go for 6.6.20? Thanks!

Message 26082 - Posted: 20 Jun 2009, 13:39:32 UTC - in response to Message 26012.

I just installed the ATI GPU app 0.19f. This is my first GPU app and I love it. My system contains i7 core (920) processor, Windows 7 RC, 6 GB of memory, the graphics card is a PowerColor HD 4850 with 1GB of GDDR3 memory and using Catalyst 9.6 the driver is 8.62. Boinc ver 6.6.36

I run 7 projects and 8 task are always running, now that I install the GPU app it is 8 task plus the MW GPU tasks. My question is starting the GPU app, I have to wait for one of the 8 task to finish before it sees the GPU app or suspend an task for a few seconds and then it sees the GPU app. Is there any way to tell BOINC when MW downloads a task to start using the GPU app.

I am having some problems it froze a couple time and then I need to exit Boinc an restart it and all is well. The screen will go blank for a second and than I know it froze. I turned off the screen saver and stop changing the desktop display automatically. This helped some but do you think it is the driver and if so what other drivers work with windows 7.

I have been trying to get that GPU thing to work for few days. Now it does, kind of....

Calulates very fast but very soon diplay driver stops responding and screen freezes for some minutes and then BOINC resumes computing with CPU only.

OS is Vista X64 and driver is Cat 9.6.
Cards are 2x HD4890.

Cat 5 don't work either, I tried it on 2 4890's and all they would do is run the Wu's for a few minutes & then I'd get the VPU Reset.

No joy in Mudville. Bought a HD 4850 tonight specifically to run here and have had nothing but problems. I'm running Vista 64 w/ I7 920. When I have BOINC running and computing w/ GPU things appear correct. But when I call up another window BOINC and everything totally freezes. No error messages and no way to do anything other than a total power off (by switch).

I had installed Cat 9.6 which had the problem so installed Cat 8.12 as someone suggested. Same problem

I copied the cmd line to n1 w1.1 as shown. It runs one unit as it should. I earlier tried n3 with the same results.

Nothing is overclocked and the temp on the GPU is no hot.

Any ideas?

More info: I was incorrect ... if you wait 3-4 minutes things will start working so it doesn't require a total power down.

I have exactly the same configuration (only one card) and cannot get it working. It just uses CPUs. I noticed that even though I have Vista64, the aticalc*.dll files don't have "64" suffix. Do you see the same in your system? Maybe that's the problem.

At first it was crashing constantly. Then I changed the .dll file names as described, rebooted the system. Now it doesn't crash, but only uses CPU and not GPU. Any clues?

Oh, actually, it still keeps crashing. Even after changing .dll names.

Your suspicions are probably correct. It sounds like you installed the wrong version of Catalyst. Since you have a 64 bit OS, make sure that you're using Catalyst 9.5 Vista 64 bit version. (Catalyst 9.6 has not been reliable for crunching here at MW.) Try getting them here. For you, the installed dll's should have the 64 suffix. Copy and rename the missing *.dll files and give it another go.

I changed to Cat 9.5 and now it works a little better, not properly tough...
It starts calculating with both cards and does that for few minutes, then everything freezes and it takes few minutes and computer is responding again.

It keeps doing that for an half an hour and then it stops using another card.

My problem isn't using the CPUs since I took them offline. But I have the same issue with the thing running a while and then freezing for several minutes and then continuing. I just came home and the system had been working well but when I launched to BOINC mgr. to see what was going on it immediately errored 6 workunits and hung for 2 minutes.

I have tried 8.12, 9.2, and 9.6 and they all have serious problems. I'm now using 9.5 which works closer to what should be happening but it still isn't right.

If I turn on the Overdrive app so I can see what is happening with temperature and GPU load then it completely hangs and there is NO recovery other than a hard reset (power switch).

I have tried playing with the "n" term, w, and f as well. It seems to be more stable with n=1 but that doesn't fix all the problems.

A bit on the frustrating side.

I downloaded correct package from AMD website. I don't think one can install wrong drivers. 32-bit drivers cannot work in 64-bit OS. And my graphic card works correctly, so they have to be correct drivers. I was just thinking that maybe in 9.6 AMD changed names of those dll's again. That's why I would like to hear some confirmation from someone who installed catalyst 9.6 under Vista64.

That is what I started with and they were horrible. Yes, the files are renamed as mentioned in the readme. So you have to copy and rename them to amd.... Still didn't work. Of the ones I've tried 8.12, 9.2, 9.5, 9.6 the 9.5 version works best but not correctly.

One other thing I've notice is how the downloads are put into the cache. They are being placed into the #2 to #8 spots rather than at the bottom of the 48 units. I don't know if this is a function BOINC or the GPU app. When I was running just CPUs I don't remember seeing it do this, but then again I can't be certain that I ever paid attention to that detail.

This explains why I have seen BOINC go into the panic mode and run units with high priority.
