Can we n00bs get a straight answer here..what GPU support should we expect first? Cuda? ATI?

I'm a little confused being that it seems zslip.com only has a working ATI Milkyway GPU app and not Cuda? Wasn't Cuda the main supported app for Boinc?

Is there a timeline when the Cuda app will be available? This no work thing is getting pretty stupid.

Edit: and will there be a screensaver for the GPU app? It seems even now the CPU version doesn't support one?

For the original MW@home the ATI GPU support is already there, admittingly only as a third party supplied app.

For the upcoming Milkyway GPU project I would expect quite close release dates for the official CUDA application and again a third party one for ATI cards (both are more or less running already, expect competitive performance from both manufacturers). But some issues have still to be sorted out before the project can launch the first production WUs.

And concerning the screensaver I still don't get why one would need one. I would put the necessary resources better to the scientific apps itself. Every participant can use whatever screensaver he wants to, why does one need one for every project? Personally, my screensaver is a black screen, the monitor gets turned off after 10 minutes to conserve some energy if I don't use the computer.

If ATI is supported already, why isn't it running on the Milkyway GPU site?

Far as the screensaver..I just think it would be cool to see what I'm powering my computers for and using my hardware for.

If your processing with a GPU bets are you wouldn't have much to see with a screensaver. It would go by way too fast. And as CP said before, why take resources away from the work being done?

I would be happy even with a spinning 3d model of the our galaxy..(the Milkyway) That could maybe update itself from what the project finds.

I think one of the summer helpers here was going to attempt to put a screensaver together. I dont remember which student it was, but he was looking for suggestions on what to put in it. So it might happen sometime this summer, but I dont think a screensaver is anywhere near the top of the "to do" list.

That might be cool to see from a time to time basis.

Travis should have the best guess as he is working on it. The code is out and being improved, but CUDA will only be ran on the GPU site. It is supposed to be up soon.

I can't really speak for the code monkeys here, but in our shop, we would have to give the project an RSN* status.

Or, "A number of different approaches are being tried."**

* Real Soon Now

** We are still wissing in the pind

As far as I am concerned screen savers waste computer cycles that could best be used for crunching.

So..nobody here knows when the Cuda will be released at all? ATI is out and has bugs..

The MW_GPU project is running a different application entirely. The point of MW_GPU is to run longer searches (100x longer hopefully) to get more detailed info.

So it's not as easy as just porting the MW ATi app from here to there.

This project is still declared as Alpha status, so rule of thumb is DONT EXPECT ANYTHING, and be glad when something happens :) The original CUDA status updates were back in January, and if my personal experience is anything to go by, writing a new scientific application in an almost completely new language doesn't happen overnight (or in a week, or a month).

I know that..I'm not stupid.

But why then is a ATI app out already, when Cuda is the one that is supported by BOINC?
