21) Message boards : Number crunching : Little help for those using opti apps. (Message 32339)

@Vid,

You can not run both MW GPU & MW CPU on the same machine at the same time. If you notice at SETI, they have different version numbers for each of their optimized apps, while MW only has one version number in total.

With just one version number there is no way to make the app_info distinguish betwen CPU & GPU.

24) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU lacking needed stuff>>> (Message 31344)

i have the same issue when trying to run this project as well... i am not the newest member to the Bionic family, but i am obviously confused...?...

wont send me work because:
"it wont finish in time, Bionic only runs 86% of the time, computation 72% enabled of that"
"Can't use Nvidia GPU App, your GPU lacks the needed features"

1-why does my MW-Bionic the only one to have issues?
2-why does MW-Bionic the only one to not work on the not-so older GPUs (3xSLI 9600gt) AND my new EVGA Nvidia gtx260. (just wont run ANY data at all on ANY GPU)
3-why wont MW-Bionic run on a CPU? i thought my topline MainBoard and topline CPU w/ 4 cores and 8 processing threads could help??? no?

i am obviously butt-hurt about this! i didnt rreallize Bionic App Communities had degraded to the point that ONLY the undisclosed ELITE get to proccess data for them...

i have detached MW project. I am VERY dissapointed after reading all the issues you have AND the way you seem to just dismiss people...

After excluding 80% of people from helping you compute, do you actually have a chance of meeting deadlines or expected milestones? or do you have no expectations?
Ah, who cares right, its just free money, and free gfx cards... maybe someone who is paying that "free money" will care how it is managed. Lets find out, they probably wont, but everyone eventually pays attention after enough ppl speakk up.

Best wishes to the better of your team!

FYI might help: only the new GPUs actually support PhysX type proccessing.
i imagin it is somehow related to the 2x precision stuff MW-B is excluding people over...
in your Nvidia control panel, disable physX (on by default) if you have a GPU under the Nvidia GT2xx series. this will resolve the exponential degredation in the processing of gfx, speed up OTHER bionic app processing(obviously not MW-B, they wont send you work.), and most importantly prevent GPU realated lockups... hope that helps you ppl havin issues.

First off, I'm making two assumptions - (1) that your cache is set to greater than three days, and (2) that you're running BOINC v6.6.36.

MW has three day deadlines, so if your cache setting is larger than that, it causes work fetch problems.

BOINC 6.6.36 has a known bug in the work fetch scheduler, try using v6.6.20 or 28.

I have no problem getting CPU work on my C2D laptop using a 1+1 cache and BOINC 6.6.28.

MW requires double-precision capabilities, which is why only the higher end cards can be used here. That is the nVidia 260 series and above, and the ATI Radeon 3850, 4830, 4850, 4770, 4870, and 4890 (currently).

MW needs to use double-precision math, I think the lowest nVidia that will work here is the 260 class.

Cat 9.9, win 7 32 bit, 4870x2, boinc 6.10, and ati 0.2 ..

Main problem is choppy video graphics playback and GUI compared with the very smooth video and GUI which was completly not noticable slowdowns in previous setups.

Edited app_info when it comes to the F tag and N tag, 1 concurrent work unit or higher/lower frequency rates had little to no effect on video performance!

I heavily use my computer as a media center and don't wish to pause the application while the computer is in use!

Rollback? Is it expected due to the code rewrite which emphasizes app performance over everything else? Anyone else experience this?

Have you tried the W tag? Try increasing it above the default "1" to 1.1 or 1.2.

Tried the 0.20 app but got a LOT of output file absent errors. I'm using 6.10.4 BOINC, Vista Ultimate 64 bit and HD4850. 0.19g is running ok but is not able to get any work for GPU. When it asks for work for CPU it gets work just fine and processes them without problems.

Example of errored WUs here.

See here.

Getting a lot of bad wu. I am using plain 6.10.4 and the new cp ati ap.

Anyone else having this error problem?

I have 2 hd 4870 in a q6600 intel. with 4 geg ram.

did you run out your cache before changing the app? I had that problem yesterday with the CPU app on one box. You may need to reset the project too.

By reading in this Thread I take it the 0.20 Applications is for the CPU's only & won't work with the GPU's ???

The post just before yours has the link to the ATI apps.

I just found out I won't be able to participate in the test. A family get-together that I thought would be later in the day now starts at the same time as the test. :(

Set it up now and let it run thats what I'm doing I don't plan on sitting here for 2 hours, but I will be checking on it. I will be running on the CPU except during the test and you can change it back to the GPU app when you get home.

Because I have to leave before the test starts and I'm not letting a pre-alpha test run completely unattended.

Been there, done that (too many times)

afaik, only 6.10.4 or later BOINC client will work with the ATI app (earlier version didn't correctly pass along the correct info to get ATI work). You will also need to remove the app_info file for proper testing, as BOINC itself will detect your ATI card and download the ATI app correctly now.

I would recommend you finish out your work, shut down BOINC and back up the BOINC folders by copying them elsewhere, then upgrade to 6.10.4. Next remove or rename the app_info file and remove or move any of the other files in the milky way directory. Now you can start BOINC back up on the new build. This way you don't risk ruining any of the current work that might confuse the developers into thinking its a problem with the new client, and also this way you will start off with a clean MW directory.

If this info was directed at me, that is my plan.

I'll probably just detach MW after backing up everything. That might even give it a new HostID for the testing.
