I seem to remember reading something about problems with using older versions of boinc manager and remote connections with the newer clients.

(Message 16568) Posted 22 Mar 2009 by RS__ Post: I presume your using a router with DHP, so try widening the acceptable remote host ip's in the "remote_host.cfg" file. i.e. 196.161.0.2 196.161.0.3 196.161.0.4 196.161.0.5 You may also need to check your firewall settings.
