I'm afraid what I'm seeing is 6 hours at a time of multitasking reserving all 4 cores, 8 threads but only using less than 20% of my total CPU.

nope. my mistake. when I exited the BOINC mgr. that process continued...process not completing not the first time i've seen this...

I'm going to have to turn these off till you stop wasting hours of my CPU time.

Kudos to the professor for showing some real commitment to the project and her students.
Few people outside of the sports departments get rich in academia and her donation of her $30,000 prize should be an inspiration to us all.

I've noted an unworthy complaint or two here on the boards, so I feel somebody should step up and spotlight this.

Fact is, and nobody wants to hear it, if 2 million people are running the software fine and you can't, you have a problem with your personal machine, probably hardware.
For a shoestring project, whose goal is more to provide free resources to grad students in CS and the other sciences so they can finish their degrees than to actually 'do science', it's impossible to personally contact every individual with bad gear.
There is plenty of enthusiastic and willing help to be found on the message boards if you make the effort to pursue it.
Nobody wants to hear their computer is hosed and nobody wants to spend the time, money and effort to look into it.
The only real option is to cut off the bad performers. If they actually want to step up and provide free resources to education, they'll fix it. If not, they'll go play a browser game.

Me, I'm having fun watching my new build here finish off the MT wu's in a minute 10 seconds.

there is Something going on with the MT n=body wu. Hanging up for hours at the end and no it's not a matter of needing a few minutes to finish.
Turning them off.

I've had a couple MT WU lately that only use in the area of 40% of my cpu capacity and if I restart the BOINC client the WU start from scratch.
Whaazzup?

I've had one of these wu hang up, leaving 1 core out of 4 actually running till I restarted boinc.
I've done several of them and they're not validating.
There's definitely a problem here. I'm going to opt out of them for a while till it's fixed.
whoops.. nope. 4 open CL's and 1 N-body..all in the last 5 days.
something going on that's different.

have been acting a little strange the last few days or couple weeks. Had one stick with 1 cpu still running, some real short ones and now one that projects to need about 40 hours on my fairly good 4x cpu. I am aware of the inaccurate predictive nature of the client for completion time but i've observed this for a long time now. I can pretty much estimate by the time a wu is 10% done.
Have any problems with the WU been noticed?

yeah. update..checking wu results shows problems over the last 5 days. not me i don't think.

Keep running when I close the BOINC manager. I have to go into task manager on my windows to kill it.
Yes. I have selected for the processes to terminate when I exit the manager and all the others indeed are.
Not running at low priority either.

You are SOOOooo missing the point. IF you crunch 38 hours of work in 12 minutes, even IF it jams the system and stops all other processing for that 12 minjutes, you've shown a 50,000% net profit on your crunching time. hello?

If users return invalid results the WU gets issued again if necessary

Can You remember the days when MW was down three or four times a week? Stuff has done their job to optimize the project and reduce data traffic, now the crunchers need to do their part.

(they only needed 3, but they gotta keep us busy)

Can You remember the days when some people compiled a app to crunch in single precision (faster) and bad wu's validated against bad wu's and good ones did not validate? It's up to the project to decide how many results are necessary.

Thank you Mr. Obvious. as to the '3'...it was 'pick a number' the 'tell me 3 times' model is the most common. The truth is, they probably get 5 identical verifiable results back from every WU.
As to data traffic..we're streaming HD movies these days..are you seriously gonna tell me data traffic of this nature is still an issue? LOL Server load? come ON..computing power is so dirt cheap these days it's pretty much made BOINC obsolete altogether.

The simple fact of the matter is, with a volunteer project of this nature you are NEVER going to control the users input the way we're discussing here. It is Simply Not Going To Happen without enough effort on the part of the project people to negate the entire benefit of the volunteer project.

The responses to my comments above are all non issues due to the fact that most of the 9 or 12 people doing the same WU return good results. The bad stuff should be going into the trash without human effort. If the users can really jam up the works, I submit the server side of the project isn't set up properly.

I don't understand the point here. If users return invalid results the WU gets issued again if necessary. In fact, as all the serious BOINC projects list as having more crunchers than work, these results aren't even on the grid. If one result is bad, the other 8 are good. (they only needed 3, but they gotta keep us busy)
Why are you all getting your panties into a twist over this and wasting the time of the people running the project?

This is supposed to be science, not a race to see who can accumulate the most points.
Using anything other than the project approved software is BS and you're being childish and threatening the integrity of the projects. If you don't understand WHY, you don't belong here.
In any case, all the serious science projects list as having more crunchers than needed..what's the point? All you're accomplishing is to make them issue WU to 9 crunchers instead of 3 to keep us busy. No Value Added.
I've only EVER run SETI or BOINC on my personal, home computer and i'm still well into the 98th percentile.
I don't have a spare bedroom full of frigging obsolete computers crunching score up for me, but I HAVE been active and crunching for over 12 years now with maybe 1 month's total downtime and you fanboys are NEVER going to show that kind of commitment.

Oh my goodness. I just saw a multi threaded N body simulation that the BOINC client had estimated at 38 hours crunching finish up in 12 minutes.
I'm sold.. we all need to make the jump to 64 bit and force all the software vendors to support it. Not just for BOINC but everything...what an astounding performance increase.

These WU that call all the cpu's seem to finish pretty quickly. I just watched one scheduled for an hour of crunching finish up in 7+ minutes. The power of 64 bit multithreading I presume.
My general cpu use meter shows me staying between 90 and 95% use for these, less efficient maybe but these WU seem to go so quickly it doesn't worry me.

SciFi/SyFy has obviously failed as a cable channel. They're probably just fulfilling some contractual obligations to provide the programming, or barefacedly making the most of their remaining advertising and optimizing profits in the endgame.
Too bad, but in my NVHO it never really took off anyway.
Television in general has an aversion to good stories and writing and SciFi has always been especially vulnerable in that respect..it falls apart faster and worse than other genres when not done well.
At least that's my NVHO as a 50 year 'serious' scifi reader.

The change to SyFy? A rare bit of honesty in the industry. They're rebranding themselves as crap.
