1) Message boards : Number crunching : Crunching CPU/GPU 0.20 together?? (Message 31484)

There has to be a way to do it. SETI and AQUA had both CPU and GPU (CUDA) applications that were able to run on the same setup. I've done both on the same computer. It may take some manipulation of the folders on MW's side.

Sounds like MW, cut the credits and make the WUs longer without a word. I've gotten some too. I started dumping them on my machines that used to take <1.25 hours. I had one at 8+ hours and still needed another 3.5 hours to complete. Maybe it's something with the WUs themselves, but they are not completing as usual. I'll be checking my other machines and if they are the same, they will be dumped also. I've also noticed that my Task duration correction factor jumped from 0.342433 to 1.404795 after completing one of the WUs.

Looks as though Milkyway@Home has installed the "Restrictor Plate"(NASCAR Racing Reference) again in order to slow all of us down again. I'll be back when the pastures are greener again. Now if they would pay part of my electric bill each month then lowering the credit wouldn't be a problem, but since they don't I look to get the most bang for the "Proverbial" buck ($$$). You can't compare one project with another since the science, goals, and scientific formulas are vastly different. It's like pricing apples and peanuts, they are completely different.

I believe that you have to have at least nvidia 180 driver to run gpugrid now, see the info on their site.

Any update on the CUDA project. I've checked both MW websites and have seen nothing since the update in June 11.

Message from server: No work sent
Message from Server: There was work available, but none for you as your abacus has the wrong size beads.

Great one banditwolf, though I've ran out of sand in my yard and I've broken over a dozen sticks while scribing hash marks to count the number of times my computers have received the phrase "No work sent" from the server. F-U-T-I-L-E is the word that comes to mind. In the mean time, I am working to bring up my credits in other projects. At least in those who have not retired yet!

Kind of reminds me of HAL@HOME. You get a couple of hours of work and then "NO WORK FROM THE SERVER." Next, you have to wait a couple of days to get more work. Sounds like a government run project, in my opinion. Just a couple of laughs. Thankfully there are other projects that need assistance too.

Feed the beast. Limiting on the workunit queue size to 6 will not stop the beast from starvation. Feed the beast.

Okay, I've downloaded the optimized files (I have worked with them in the past, under a different version of BOINC Manager) Now, I am using BOINC version 6.4.5 and the familiar (Projects) file is not there. Where do we place the optimized files?

Well my MW@H buddies. The credits have taken a dive again and I haven't seen a change in the time it takes to complete the work unit using the MW@Home stock application. What a pitty, I could understand if the time to completion had dropped the proportionally, but it hasn't. Will devote more assets to GPU@home.

Yes, ABC@Home has the right thoughts to longer work units. They offer up to 1000 credits so people will crunch the longer ones, otherwise they will just about them. Good thought on their part. I've started back at SETI@home and GPU@home, however I'm using CUDA GPU's and they complete SETI work unit in about 30 seconds to 3 minutes and GPU@home in about 12 hours. Oh yeah, the points are good too.
13) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit per WU dropped again (Message 9167)

Anyone notice that the amount of credit per work unit has decreased yet again. Posting between 20 - 30 per work unit vice the 39 to 41 per unit. I know the code is being optimized however it is still taking the same amount of time to complete the work. They snuck this change in on us while we were not looking.

This is what happened between 0.07 and 0.13:

Computers A - App 0.07, 1.1 hrs; App 0.10, 0.13, 1.0 hrs; App 0.13, 1.2 hrs.
Computer B - 0.55 hrs; 0.51 hrs; and 0.65 hrs, respectively

Computers A - Athlon XP2600+, Athlon XP2800+ and two Athlon XP3000+
Computer B - Athlon64 X2 6000

What was changed to reduce the time App 0.07 and 0.10 and then increased the time between App 0.10 and 0.13. Are the work units longer or what?

What I'm trying to say, if you have a faster application code then share it with Travis and Dave so they can incorporate it into their official code and made available to everyone, so that people are not jumping through hoops trying to install an unofficial application and creating more problems and headaches for for the administrators of this project. This is exactly what Travis and Dave have said over and over in the past and it seems to be a practical idea. They can not be expected to work out problems in some other code that was not put out by them. If you have a faster application, simple share it with them. Everyone benefits when an highly optimized code is made available.

What happened to the new stock version. Prior to this new stock version my athlos 3000 computers were doing a work unit in just over an hour. Prior to that stock version they were doing the work units in about 1 hour and 8 min. So there was a noticable increase in speed between the two stock versions. Now with the "NEW" stock version, the amount of time has risen again to about 1 hour and 8 min. It seems to me that there was a decrease in speed with this newer optimised version of MW.

I have also seen performance changes on my athlon 64 - 6000 X2, mainly that on some occasions the cpu time slows down to a crawl (like 5 actual seconds for each CPU second) and the work units say that it still took 36 min to complete, but in fact thay are actually taking longer. Work units from other BOINC projects such as GPU@home and ABC@home do not behave this strangely.

The newer faster application has reverted back to its slower cousin.

Just keep one version only and do not accept work from other applications that are not official (released by you).

I just received this work unit:

application MilkyWay@home
created 30 Nov 2008 17:16:17 UTC
name gs_622_1228138412_255520
minimum quorum 1
initial replication 1
max # of error/total/success tasks 1, 4, 1

Are work units under 1.22 still going to crunch?
