Using the following drivers (Going by Boinc) and getting mixed results for Modified Fit, but no out and out 'computation errors'.

CAL: ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.1848, 1024MB, 991MB available, 4176 GFLOPS peak)
OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5800 series (Cypress) (driver version 1272.2 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1272.2), 1024MB, 991MB available, 4176 GFLOPS peak)

Post:
Tried the 13.1 driver, the 12.8 driver and the 13.8 beta driver. No success. Failures ranged from the WU's reaching 100% and then saying error, to Boinc reporting the GPU but MW saying no ATI GPU, and the system recovering itself, eventually! Also tried several versions of Boinc (avoid).

With 13.4 and 13.8 Albert works, Einstein works and POEM works.

All Work fails on my HD5850 (W7x64, Boinc 7.2.5, i7-3770K with GTX660Ti, GTX660ti, Intel 4000 and ATI HD5850). Already tried, suspending other work, changing drivers and resetting the project. All tasks complete but then fail at 100%

Example with Boinc Error log:

I've also swapped the GPU's around to make the HD5850 the first GPU (and used for monitor), and reinstalled Boinc... Still getting the same errors.
Note the problem exists for both MW@H 1.02 and Separation (Modified Fit) 1.24 OpenCL WU's.

OK but you could also separate the N-Body Simulations into mt and non-mt runs with different selectable queues, so ordinary crunchers can easily configure what they crunch.

The other alternative is running a second instance of Boinc, either in the same OS (different directory...) or in a Linux VM, with limited cores and no GPU - but again, not for the novice.

As for trying to fool the scheduler, its already bamboozled.

The devs need to respect that people who spend several $hundred on a GPU want to use it, and don't want it sitting idle just so an additional CPU thread/core gets occupied, especially when its running the same type of WU, but 100times slower. This even happens when non-mt apps are unnecessarily prioritized (mostly dual GPU setups).

Maybe the runtime estimator isn't working - after 30 mt runs it should be more than 1s. It should even adjust for queued WU's on completion of runs. 1s is probably a default because an estimate isn't being set. This won't be helping the work buffer or scheduler.

Unless someone just got the names messed up, the MilkyWay@Home N-Body Simulation app actually comprises both a 1.18 version (for single threaded work) and a 1.18 (mt) version.

For example,

I would like to create a profile and be able to choose v1.18 (mt) for systems without a GPU, and the v1.18 type of WU for systems with a GPU. Maybe mt is a work in progress and not worth pursuing or maybe others would want this too?

The estimated runtime is still (didn't auto-adjust) 1sec for mt work.

I have a queued MilkyWay@Home N-Body Simulation 1.18 (mt) WU that has an estimated run time of 1 second. Another such WU has an expected runtime of 4seconds. A non-mt WU has an estimated runtime of 93min. In theory these small estimates could cause work buffer/cache problems.

'NVIDIA's GeForce GTX Titan, Part 1: Titan For Gaming, Titan For Compute'
by Ryan Smyth, anandtech.com

I have tested Titan last day on milkyway and it works ok. When doubleprecision is enabled it can run 7 tasks in parallel (~97% GPU, 80% of TDP=200W) and can produce cca 300k credits per day.

Have you tried more than 7 tasks in parallel?

The Geforce GTX Titan has a peak performance of 4500 Gflop per second SP and 1/3 of the computation units run in DP mode so the DP peak performance should be 1500Gflops.

It has 2688 Streamprocessors 1/3 are then 896 for DP.

As the top dp frequencies are lower than the top sp frequencies the maximum performance is slightly less than 1/3rd - it's 1.3TFLOPS.

I thought the HD 7770 (1/16) was miserable but that was a mid range card. NVidia's new 'Top' card, the GTX680 only offers 1/24th the FP32 performance.

I tried several drivers (present 11.7, early versions and beta 11.8), each time with a clean install. Went back to Boinc 6.10.60 and tried several more.
Basically I got nowhere, and was going round in circles. About 30 reboots is my limit. I think it's fair to say that ATI/AMD simply don't support a 2003 x64 server. It worked fine on XP x86, but on 2003 the drivers don't seem to report to Boinc correctly. I can get an all clear on Device Manager and GPUZ reports the GPU correctly, but Boinc say's no. Perhaps the drivers did not register correctly in some way. I've spent too much time on this so I'm giving up. Might find another host at some stage, but for now I'm out of here.

Note I also posted about this in the Berkeley Forums.

Having problems with an AMD/ATI driver install.
Pulled a GTX470 and installed an HD 5850.

Tried the auto detect AMD install but had to chose XPx64, while using a Server (2003x86). After rebooting there was no indication that the drivers took, so I uninstalled all NVidia ware, rebooted and did a manual install of the driver (just the driver). While the driver is there, Boinc does not see the GPU and reports, Caught SIGSEGV in ATI GPU detection:

Furl, while I'm glad to see your 3850 works, why are you using your HD3850 but not really using your HD 4700/4800?

By the way, I would suggest you use Boinc 6.10.33 rather than 6.10.26.

While the 3850 is doing about twice as much work as one i7 (all 8 threads), together the three i7's could do about 1.5 times (ball park) as much as your 3850:

My HD 5850 run times vary from 212sec down to 91sec, making it about 5 times as fast as an HD 3850 or roughly 20 times as fast as an i7.
The Enthusiast (Cayman) cards are about 2 times as fast as an HD 5850 - Just a bit of perspective.

PS. If I remember correctly the 3870 should also work.

I have an HD 5850 supported by a 2.13GHz Core 2 duo (6400). This thing uses about 40% CPU just to open Task Manager! When minimized to the tray it's still using around 10 or 20%. Clean XP install, and nothing else other than FF on the system (not open at the time). No CPU tasks running on that rig either - probably not worth the bother.
Point being, CPU usage is very much dependent on the CPU.
XP tends to have about a 3% overhead. Not sure about Vista and W7 but I would expect them to be at least 3%. As for the various Linux flavors, it can vary quite a bit.

PS. GPU utilization is 98%, except for the few seconds it takes to load a new task.
