Posted 4 Dec 2009 by Profile [P3D] Crashtest
Post:
Is there a reason for the VERY short deadline?

Yes - ATI GPUs calculate a workunit in 1min - 10min, depending on GPU type, gpu clock, mem clock etc.

With a deadline of 2 weeks - the server will crash like it did with longer deadline in the past - it cant operate with millions of workunit in progress

We need larger WUs and a bigger cache:

I tryed a ultralow-voltage singlecore-cpu with a oc'ed 4870x2

6 WUs done 3min 12sec ...

on Collatz : 120 WUs done in 19h 56min
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Crunching CPU/GPU 0.20 together?? (Message 31465)

Why ?

On Collatz - you can crunsh on CPU and GPU at the same time without VMs ... and everything is stored in the same folder .. the 2 apps and the WUs (and the dll's)

Speed increase just astonishing.

So let's just check what the credit reduction has done for you.

Before: 74 credits / 67 seconds = 1.10 credits per second
After: 53 credits / 46 seconds = 1.15 credits per second

Nice reduction, isn't it? :D

Very nice Cluster Physik :D
[/quote]

Are you sure ?
Before: 74 credits / 51 seconds = 1.45 credits per second
After: 53 credits / 42 seconds = 1.26 credits per second
(depending on WUs - some 53-Credit-WUs need up to 60s some up to 30s - most need 42s)

well 1.26 is lower than 1.45 ...

the new coming nVIDIA G300 Cards will calculate MW faster (faster double prec. support)

the Q about single prec in MW: ATI users would like it too with 4s / WU ?

the current nVIDIA cards are to slow in double prec. - and the credits are high enough if you got the "best" MW card - an ATI 4870 will get over 75credits per minute (1 WU) or over 108000 Credits / day - this is enough

there are 2 types of WUs at the moment:

normaly 3 Stream (so 74 Credits) and some few 2 Stream WU (called gs_82test_2Stream_1....)

2 Stream = faster, less calc --> less credits

"I wonder why the 4730 isn't down around 75w."

Well the 4770 is a new Chip (RV740) produced in 40nm; the 4730 is an old Chip (RV770) with other RAM, produced in 55nm.

Problem:
Device 0: ATI Radeon HD 4350/4550 ...
not supporting double precision

No supported GPU found!

If you got a 43xx/45xx Card inside your Computer, MW will crash - remove it.
if your 4770 wont work with Catalyst 8.12 - you cant do MW on XP because the 4770 was newer than the 8.12 so only newer Catlyst would work but on XP that would mean no MW (or had to update to Vista...)

ps
You should try some tools like
SiSoft Sandra - got a infoplane for AMD/ATI Stream / CAL
Everst - GPGPU Info area

there you could test "double precision" support yes/no

howto:

download 8.12
start the exe so the setup should start
there might be an error about no ATI Card found

if this error happens:

exit/cancel setup

I ONLY GOT GERMAN OS so the label could got an other caption

open device manager (devmgmt.msc)
search and select the vga / your 4770
select update driver
- if it ask something about Windows Update select NO....
- there should be a question automatic or select from list ...SELECT FROM LIST
- dont search i wanna select or something like that
- remove compatible hardware (v) and click on disk/drive button
- this should open a search combobox,

search the driver - it should be on
C:
\ATI
\SUPPORT
\8-12_xp64_dd_ccc_enu_72273 or somthing like that
\DRIVER
\XP_INF or something like that
there should be a CX_????.inf
and click OK

now it should show several ATI CARDS select one of "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series"

than finish ....

after that
open explorer to the \ATI\8-12...\CCC and start the setup there to install the CCC

Every Catalyst after 9.1 crashs Gipsels ATI-MW-App with Blackscreens / VPU-Recovers

Solutions:
try Vista/7 with current Catalyst
or
try to install the 8.12 on XP with a 4770 but the 8.12 dont know the 4770 PCI-DeviceIDs so you must install it manualy ...
or
pray to your god(s)/AMD that AMD will fix this
