All my CPU machines and the GPU one seem to have _1s_4_ and _2s_4_ WUs only.

As soon as I see a _3s_x_ WUs I will watch it with interest, and erroring out trepidation.

;))

However, after looking back to work crunched about 20.33 UTC I see I had 18 _235_3s_4_ WUs all of which showed no CPU time used, a blank claimed credit and 0 granted credit. An example can be seen here.

It's weird because with every 3s WU i've seen, the application reports 0 iterations.

Today I signed up to the MilkyWay_GPU Project.

I entered the Project URL as suggested,
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/

Although already registered with the MilkyWay project I had to re-register - I would have preferred not to do this. I would have liked the project to respect existing users in the same way other projects do.

After re-registering, Im taken to the find a team page, with the following errors,

Notice: Undefined variable: params in /export/share0/www/boinc/milkyway_gpu/html/user/team_search.php on line 167
Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /export/share0/www/boinc/milkyway_gpu/html/inc/team.inc on line 35

Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /export/share0/www/boinc/milkyway_gpu/html/inc/team.inc on line 43

I choose the, not interested in joining a team option!

No tasks were forthcoming so I Checked Boinc Messages:

Message from server: server error: feeder not running

I could do with a bite,

It would help to read the news before bashing the project.

Hello MilkyWay@Home,

As you may or may not know, I am a new scientist working with BOINC. In the past half hour I have started a number of runs attempting to verify that I can in fact do it. I've been having some weird issues for the past week but I think I've figured everything out. these ps_sgr_test_* files are from that.

ps_sgr_10_1s_1 is an actual scientific run, but I accidentally set the integral size to be too small so when you get workunits from that you will probably run into the frustration mentioned in this thread ( http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=878#24047 ). I apologize for that and will try to get that run ended as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience,
John Vickers

That's for your work with the project, it is really appreciated.

Something to consider: a 4870 at 30s/WU and ~100W needs 3kJ to crunch a WU. My Phenom 9850 with optimized app needs about 20mins/WU. At ~100W that's 120kJ, fourty times as much energy. Do you still think it's a good idea to run Mw on CPUs?

MrS

Encourage the project to throw out everyone except people that have GPUs and only have a single project... that's your agenda, right?

Even if the numbers of Mr. Spadge are a bit flawed (a quad will complete 4 WUs in that time and most quadcores consume a bit less than a HD4870 meaning the advantage is not 40x but only a factor of 8 or so), it is very true that GPUs are far more economical to use. One simply wastes energy with a CPU here.
Frankly, CPUs can be put to a better use at other projects, where GPUs can't help. Really.

See, that's what rubs me the wrong way about "GPU guys", as claimed by other people. This is the same schtick that came out of the other threads. Toss the people with CPUs out so there's more work units for those of us "in the club"...

That kind of attitude just isn't happening in reverse. The project offered a totally new project for GPUs. There is a segment of GPU users who seem to accept the project's idea of having GPUs do NEW WORK that is more sensitive that could not be done by CPUs in sufficient time, but there is another segment that doesn't like the perception that they have to start over with their stats.

As I said some time ago, this isn't about "science". The project has made the determination that both tasks are worthwhile ventures. It is time the "GPU guys" accept that...

Edit: Nevermind, not getting into this

Your account page is here:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/show_user.php?userid=21

The DB isn't being copied from what I can tell, only 22 accounts so far.

Edit: Beremat Action News 5 Live Update!
The whole website just got its style on. Font size is now bigger and there's a background.
Logging in now works, and you can edit your profile, I think.
The typo was fixed, and creating a team is possible. It's all coming together, all that's left is the replacement of "INSERT PROJECT NAME HERE" and creation of Wus.

Two teams are created, and as the population count grows past 25, citizens of Milkyway_GPU are worried about overpopulation.

Dave, Travis, or anyone else, if you're reading this, I found the reason why the links to the user pages from the search page aren't working. There's a typo.

For example, searching my name gives this result:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkway_gpu/show_user.php?userid=13

However, if I fix the typo and make it:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/show_user.php?userid=13

The link works.

The versions 8.12 and 9.1 are supposed to work (on some systems WinXP systems only 8.12 appears to work, don't know why) without any modification. That are the versions you may try.

8.12 seems to work (9.1 is not available at the sapphiretech-website, so I can't try 9.1) Is there a specific reason why this quite old driver works and newer ones not?

Regards, Lothar

The reason is because with versions 9.2 and up, AMD/ATI renamed some of the .dlls required for the MW app to work. Previous versions have the old filenames, so they will work.

Should be even better now that the workunits should take around twice as long to crunch.

Wonderful, we've solved the problem of WU availability, but now you've effectively cut WU credits almost in half (for me) yet again!

Just because they take longer to crunch doesn't mean that they don't give more credits. :D
