An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump

Considered a masterpiece of British art, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump is a 1768 oil-on-canvas painting by Joseph Wright. Portraying a scientific subject in the reverential manner formerly reserved for historical or religious scenes, the painting depicts a natural philosopher—a forerunner of the modern scientist—recreating an experiment in which a bird is deprived of oxygen before a group of onlookers.

Oberlin College Founded (1833)

Oberlin was the first college in the US to regularly admit African-American students and is also the oldest continuously operating coeducational institution. The college has long been associated with progressive causes, and it was a hotbed of abolitionism and a key stop along the Underground Railroad. Both students and faculty were involved in the controversial Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of a fugitive slave in 1858.

Too Many Drink and Drive

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 10 binge drinkers drove after the last time they drank heavily. Half of those drivers downed five or more drinks at a bar, restaurant, or nightclub before getting behind the wheel. Of the binge drinkers who chose to drive after drinking at one of these establishments, about 25 percent said they had consumed at least 10 drinks before leaving. In the US, more than 11,000 deaths from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes each year are linked to binge drinking

Blackout Engulfs New York City (1977)

The New York City blackout of 1977 came at a low point in New York history, at a time when the city was facing a financial crisis. It lasted only one night, but by the time it was over, a record 3,776 people had been arrested, and looting, vandalism, and arson had caused an estimated $300 million worth of damage. The chain of events that caused the blackout began when two circuit breakers were tripped in Westchester County.

George Eastman (1854)

In the late 1800s, George Eastman invented roll film and founded the Eastman Kodak Company, offering affordable cameras marketed under the motto, "You press the button and we do the rest." His invention made motion pictures possible and allowed early pioneers such as Edison and the Lumière Brothers to develop filmmaking. Later in his career, he donated $100 million to a number of different institutions.

Pet Skunks

Though these animals are best known for the foul-smelling fluid they emit as a defense against predators, skunks are occasionally kept as pets. Their scent glands can be removed, and they can be trained to live indoors with humans, but pet skunks remain relatively rare, due in part to restrictive laws and the complexity of their care. In the 20th century, most US states outlawed the keeping of wild animals in an effort to stem the spread of rabies.

Calorie Restriction May Prolong Life

Cutting calories may slow the aging process, reduce the risk of disease, and result in a longer life span, a long-term study of monkeys suggests. The study confirms in primates what has long been known to be true in mice, worms, flies, and other species. Over 20 years, rhesus monkeys whose diets were not restricted were nearly three times more likely to have died than those whose calorie intake was reduced by 30%. The rate of cancers and cardiovascular disease in the dieting monkeys was also less than half of those permitted to eat as they pleased. It is unclear whether other primates, like humans, would experience the same benefit from a calorie-restricted diet.

Medal of Honor Authorized by US Congress (1862)

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the US. It is presented by the president for "gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of…life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy." Members of all branches of the US military are eligible to receive the medal, but each branch has its own special design. The medal, first awarded during the Civil War, was designed by the Philadelphia Mint.
