Separation Application Shutting Down on Tuesday, Jun 20th
(Message 75884)
Posted 22 Jun 2023 by Falconet Post: And in progress tasks weren't aborted by server, so people who still have some will be running them and then send them into the void I guess...I wonder if the server will take them? If it's just the generator off, maybe it will. Otherwise we might have people with hundreds of completed tasks being repeatedly refused by the server. You did well to abort them considering they weren't going to be used for any purpose at all. |

Separation Application Shutting Down on Tuesday, Jun 20th
(Message 75724)
Posted 19 Jun 2023 by Falconet Post: Yes, we will be turning the entire Separation application off tomorrow. We aren't going to turn off the Wu generator and then let WUs trickle back in for a couple weeks, because we aren't going to use those results for anything. It's work that will have no scientific value. The generator should've been turned as soon as results were no longer needed. |

New Poll Regarding GPU Application of N-Body

New Poll Regarding GPU Application of N-Body
(Message 75688)
Posted 18 Jun 2023 by Falconet Post: They did build an OpenCL app for Nvidia and AMD. However, as you can read in the OP, it wasn't faster than the CPU app so it did not make sense to deploy it. They are open to it but only if it's significantly faster than CPUs. From this message: For anyone who wants to play around with the GPU code, the current GPU code for Nbody can be found at the sheilsGPU branch (https://github.com/Milkyway-at-home/milkywayathome_client/tree/sheilsGPU). It is out of date compared to the CPU version of Nbody though, so you will need to compare against master to see what changes have been made since then. If you are able to produce a meaningful speedup for widely-used GPU architecture (and share the source code), we would be happy to consider implementing any upgrades you come up with! It is hard to make speedups for generic GPU architecture (which is what we would prefer to do as a BOINC project), but if most people are using a specific type of GPU that can get 50-100x speed up compared to the CPU code, we would definitely be interested. |

Separation Project Coming To An End
(Message 75684)
Posted 18 Jun 2023 by Falconet Post: This message is also important: We have all the results that we need for the science, so it doesn't make a difference to us whether you continue crunching Separation WUs between now and Tuesday. I am not sure if Prof. Newberg wants to just turn off the WU generator on Tuesday or if she wants to turn off the entire application... I think she wants to do the second one. I will double check next time we talk. |

Separation Project Coming To An End
(Message 75518)
Posted 14 Jun 2023 by Falconet Post: In addition to some projects listed in previous posts, your CPU is 64-bit capable so an upgrade to a 64-bit OS is possible (you likely already know this but still). I downloaded some Asteroid@home tasks and they were using very little memory in the short time I ran them (less than 10 MB of memory per task). |

Posted 1 Apr 2022 by Falconet Post: I've added Einstein as a backup to the MilkyWay backup project. The MilkyWay project seems to be doing better, but it is still hit or miss if they can send me enough WUs to keep my one slow machine busy. Einstein has some Arecibo WUs right now that remind me of the good old days on Seti. 21 days to go if all goes according to plan. |
