It is running smoothly I think doc Travis.

let's wait for some other fixes.
For example, I hope that they soon implement on the server side a message to hosts with too older drivers, that are trashing every workunit they receive, and to hosts with an incompatible (old) app (if not implemented yet). Then, let's wait for the final computation ported to gpu app, so that wu will be few seconds faster.
Then I think it will be time to talk about double credits... At that time, project will be back to its original status!

That's not true; there is most definitely code from milkyway@home in there. If it wasn't GPL, and if the code didn't have a license he couldn't use it at all. He even mentions in this thread http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=576 that he's violating it.

Sorry, I don't want to be pedantic, but I don't see anywhere in that thread an admission that his code is stolen from milkyway's code.

I don't know when did you start to work in this project, but the first GPL release benefitted SO MUCH from Andreas Przystawik's work that maybe you're not enough thankful. Original Travis code (not GPL) was so bad that it wasn't even useful to optimize it, he just rewrote it from scratch and for CAL/IL ATi Hardware structures.

But, I'm with you that maybe he could have released his source. Just please don't be so harsh. He worked a lot for YOUR project, worked also better than an insider, wrote an application that never got published (Travis misterious project of two years ago) and just opened your project to these levels of computation.

now that they're releasing the new app, maybe it would be useful if you Gipsel release the whole source code of your old app... So that they can implement the best way of doing some calculations!
This won't happen and it won't be useful. He never gave us the source, so I had to rewrite it. I'm pretty sure there's a GPL violation here also. I am not at all happy about it. I've spent a great many hours of my life that could have been spent on something new.

please don't be harsh on gipsel.

On the other hand, we both are sure that his code would have been useful, but you got much back in all these days with so many wus done...

btw, why CAL is being deprecated in sdk 2.5 (the next sdk)? I cannot fully understand that... Does it mean that all your IL code won't work anymore with newer drivers (11.7+, maybe?) ??

At some point after I get the new ATI application ready things will start breaking for old stuff.

Is it already known if the new ATI application will have the same requirements as the old one i.e. will it run on all ATI GPUs listed in the GPU Requirements Thread?
Yes, it should.

except for the fact that OpenCL runs only on HD 4xxx and higher (so no more 3xxx)...
In addition, if you use any OpenCL 1.1 instruction, then only HD 5xxx and above will work...

By the way: GeForce 8800 GTS (driver 26099, CUDA version 3020, compute capability 1.0).
That GPU doesn't have doubles and won't work. It needs at least compute capability 1.3.

Thanks for the information! But why did milkyway sent me any WUs then?
If you tried manually installing this, it will try sending the workunits to it. You shouldn't get sent the Nvidia applications since you don't have doubles.

to be honest, this is not the way boinc should be set to work.
In your server, you should analyze the host requiring work and even if he has installed the app manually, the server should not send work because the host didn't satisfy all the requirements.
If you leave it in this way it is really easy to trick your server into doing really bad things!

Does anyone run MW on a Radeon 6850 successfully?
just upgraded and wanted to know if the ATI 58xx fix also comply to this family of cards, as i cant run the Gpu vers of MW (just SSE2)

Collatz is running smoothly though but perhaps they use other techs to get things running!?

ATi 6850 and 6870 does not have DOUBLE precision as required by this boinc project. In the 6xxx family only the 69xx will have it!

From the message boards I understand that this application might also be ported to the GPUs later, but for the time being, wouldn't it be a good idea to add checkboxes to the account / preferences where one could deselect the 'old' application when selecting the nbody app?

Otherwise, if 'use CPU' is checked, I guess, one would also get the cpu applicaton for the other Milkyway@home application. A mere waste of cpu cycles, given the outstanding performance of the ATI cards...

use the app_info to do this, while they're working on it.

30) Message boards : Number crunching : Errors on new 5970 (Message 39461)

Post:
I'm seeing lots of errors on my new 5970. Thought it might have been something to do with using an old optimised app so I renamed my app_info file and let BOINC download the latest app and there is still errors.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=154949&offset=0&show_names=0&state=4

It's not consistent on which GPU the errors are occurring. Not seeing this on my 4870 in the same machine. I increased the fan speed a bit (man it's noisy) with no change (temp did drop a little). Increased the frequency from stock with no change. Any ideas?

better to delete all (detach & reattach), because some files already present your milkyway folder do not get updated (brook.dll) and they were updated too to remove these errors on the new ati cards!

When comes the new application MW3 into production?
My fermi-cards and i are still waiting???

Ton (ftpd) Netherlands

do not prepare yourself to whatever rac... gtx 480/470 are really crippled in dual precision performances, way under ati cypress series... I'm sorry about that, but I think that the performances/watt here on milkyway will be really disappointing.

ATI's HD 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870, 4890, 5850, 5870.

The 5830 does Double Precision as is listed Here. So technically It should be able to do MW and other projects that need DP as It does have 1120 Stream Processors.

you're right. If you read the topic about GPU requirements you will see that I suggested some updates but they weren't catched up.

What we have in the works is running n-body simulations. Essentially we'll simulate a bunch of stars, with different masses and velocities, and simulate their movement around a simulated milky way. We'll be trying to find what initial parameters generate a galaxy that looks like our observed data of the Milky Way. This should generate some really interesting results :)

Anyways, at least until we (or someone else) come out with a super fast GPU version of that, it will be CPU only, giving the CPUs something new and interesting to crunch.

Depending on what you are going to do exactly, but n-body simulations with a lot of stars scale acceptable on GPUs. Maybe not that extremely well like the current code, but still. The downside is that it will be a harder port to GPUs. Maybe one should consider OpenCL (quite similar to CUDA) for it to have a single application for nvidia and ATI (and I think there is even an OpenCL compiler for Cell).

there're many n-body simulations written in opencl, some of them also available on internet. It will be interesting to see your version and how it will compare to those versions.

ps: opencl should be interesting also on cpu, as it's a relative inexpensive way to go multithread. AMD's SDK works better on cpus than on ATi gpus!

I'm not seeing very many errors on my end. Also, the number of invalids the server is seeing is down to < 2% (including results that just error out). Swapping to the new application should drop this even farther.

maybe I expressed myself wrongly.
I do not have any problem!
In fact, you can see that the few wu that I do on my 4870 are all done well, using stock app and without OC.
I was only exposing the fact that many (all?) of my wus have wingmen with problems. In many if not all there's someone that has errored out in no time. Those are machines that maybe are really stressful on the database, am I wrong?

It was my curiosity to ask how could it be that there're so many hosts doing bad work (or, saying better, no work at all, because they often error out after 0.00 seconds of computation, mainly on CUDA and ATi app).

Is it clearer now?

When I browse into my tasks, what I see is that more or less every work unit has at least one "Error while computing" in the hosts processing them (often/always after 0.00 seconds).
From your side, do you see so many wrong configs? What could it be? On my side, milkyway has an history of full reliability (ati app), never trashed any wu if not intentionally.

It's just been found that ATi app on 58x0 and 5970 has produced until now wrong results.

Hopefully, according to Gipsel/CP, the bug will be solved today or tomorrow.
I'm a little bit disappointed about the fact that we discovered it only now (quorum is really needed on BOINC!!). But i'm not disappointed with Gipsel, of course. If we want to find a culprit, I would point toward milkyway admins...
Anyway, do we have to re-do all the calculations made from the introduction of cypress-type gpu (7 months) to ensure results got so far?
