21) Message boards : Number crunching : No work from server for GPU1 (ATI 4770) (Message 42399)

Post:
Hi, I've a Q6600 host with a HD5770 and an EAH4850, the 5770 can only used
in Projects using Single Precision application/calculations.
The 4850, supports Double Precision.

Gonna swap the 5770 (S.P.)for a 5850 0r 5870, both Double Precision

Single precision, is only supported by Collatz C. and DNETC.(Don't know if I've the name correct). And Bêta testing AstroPulse app.'s,
OpenCL; BROOK/OpenCL, at SETI Bêta, which is also down at the moment.

BOINC (6.10.56; 32BIT) gives a warning, about the 5770(Device 0), but uses, after checking Device 1: EAH4850, even when another M.W task is already running on this card.

But it doesuse the card, whithout problems.
22) Message boards : Number crunching : How to force GPU computing and prevent CPU computing? (Message 42299)
Posted 22 Sep 2010 by Fred J. Verster
Post:

Is it normal that I have to hit update to get new working units each time? The client won't send or download by itself.

Let it run for itself, it is 'selfstabilysing', but it takes some time. It's dependent of the nr. of granted wu's, your Maximum daily WU quota per CPU has to be adjusted.
It should run fine after one or two days. But as you know, manual intervention can help a bit.

Alexander

Installed the 0.23 Opti App, a few month ago, GPU+ 0.04CPU, the Q6600 host has an ATI HD5770(can only be used at Collatz C. and DNet, cause it's Single Precision, also an EAH4850 (D.P.) which is crunching mostly Milky Way.
I'm using BOINC 6.10.56; WIN XP 32BIT, by letting it run, whithout doing anything, I mean manually or not pushing buttons, I've a rather constant workflow, when 4 are crunched, whithout a failiar, I get 4 new ones.
Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending of what's available.

BOINC is perfectly capable of doing it's job, which is gettin work, UPLoad the work done, then check if it's OK and D'Load new work.......
BOINC doesn't require Babysitting, it's designed to do it's, above mentioned, job. ;^)

B.t.w. the CPU is (almost) always necessary to load the GPU, haven't seen a Project that can run solely on the GPU. And this low load (0.02-0.05CPU, makes it's possible to run an CPU only task, f.i
CPDN or SETI MultiBeam (MB), or any CPU-only prog. or app..

Still running the 0.23 CPU+GPU app., didn't even know, a new version with different exe- files (nbody.exe), is now used.

From what I read on this forum thread, should I change/UPGrade, the app. I now run?
Will read a (little) more, in the meantime.
24) Message boards : Number crunching : WUs dying on GTX460 (Message 42288)
Posted 21 Sep 2010 by Fred J. Verster
Post:
Apart from the fact that a GTX460 is more expensive, compaired to an HD4850 or even higher, although not the HD5700 series (SP) the 5800 are DP.

Difference in price is not that big, but they have already a working app for ATI cards, so little reason to invest a lot of time, money and several recourses, IMO!

[ADDED]
The GTX 460, 470 and 480, all have Compute Capabillity 2.0, don't know for sure if there are also Double Precision, though.
Will have a look :)
Anyone tried to reach the Lunatics WEB-Site? Look like it's down.

Glad that this is solved, now have a Q6600 host with an HDD5770 & EAH4850, BOINC (6.10.58) reports them as 2 CAL ATI 5770, but just upgraded my XP64 host,
(QX9650+GTX470+GTX480), also reported as 2 NVIDIA 480 C.C.2.0 )

But I'm going to buy an 5850 or 5870, replace for the 4850.
Can't use the 5700 on MW, cause it's s.P. (Only Collatz C.)

Those FERMI cards, just installed a GTX480 & GTX470 on an ASUS P5E with an QX9650
CPU, they are 'Double Precision', since it isn't mentioned in the spec's?

Anyway, they are fast, very fast.

Hi, got a Juniper HD5770, Single Precision, though, also an 4850 which is
capable of doing Double Precision

It sure is a pitty, MW has no S.P. app.'s, but the 4850 does well, probably replace it for a 5850/5870 or 5900 series.
How much power they need to operate as I had some issues getting the GTX480 going, taking 15A on it's 8 pin, 15A on it's 6 pin connector and 5 or more through the Mobo. And they run quite hot, 85-95C (!)
According to spec's, that shouldn't be a problem and it isn't, only needed a 850W, instead of 650Watt.

Well, not the only ones, as I constantly get new WU's, which are done in 11 minutes. (EAH4850)
Not in High Priority, though.
Since I like Milky Way more then Collatz C., already got 17 Million Cobblestones, in a few month, well make that 9 ;^).

Gonna put in a 5850 or 5870.......

This looks like an only WIN XP 'thing'!? Needing a dummy load, haven't tried yet, if it could be a driver issue.

On SETI Bêta, there is a serious problem with Double GPU card's, but they are using/testing a different (OpenCL) app.
Won't access 1 0r 3 Devices, it looks like.
Is there already support for Single Precision Card's, or is that out off the question? ;^)

I take it, a (FERMI)GTX470 could run this app., too? Just curious............

That sure would be nice as there are still very little projects using ATI GPU's
MilkyWay and Collatz C. are the only known to use ATI GPU's.

SETI@Home , also at SETI BÊTA, a usergroup The LUNATICS are testing ATI GPU's for AP computing, they already have some working app.'s.
Here is the latest installer for FERMI GPU's.
And you'll find one of the ATI GPU app.'s as well.

Glad to hear, that this is solved, cause those High-End 5700/5800 &5900 can deliver a lot of (Whetstone)MIPS, also 'called FLOPS'.

My ATI host:Q6600(stock),DRAM 800MHz; 4,4,4,13-2T;HD5770 &EAH4850.
(Switched this & other CUDA host off, due to heat, it's 33C, atm. outside, inside a nice 24C (AC=ON) and UPLoads are/were still 'stuck' and also ran out of SETI MB, just as SETI Bêta has to little AP tasks and most of them need 3,4,5,6, even 7 wingmen.
>50% of my AP-tasks have a 3,4,5,6,7 number at the _end.

My C.C. tasks take ~11-12 minutes on the 5770 and 17 min on 4850, M.W. only runs on 4850 (Double Precision).
When running only C.C. on both cards, I need more then 10 WU's an hour....

AT least not a smart move, since more science projects (try to)make use use of the GPU, there is a lot to be gained, by implementing BROOK+/OpenCL/(CAL), even SETI AP works with fast GPU app.(Bêta-testing-still) but runtimes are less then a quarter and CPU times about 80 times less!

Is anyone using the latest BOINC, 6.10.52, which is also officially released, I think, still using 6.10.43, x86 and X64. No problems on any of the 3 QUAD host's and a HP Pavillion LT(T2400 CPU{C2D} & 7400GT PCI-E x16). 1 x64,X9650 has 2xGTS250 and 1 Q6600 has a HD5770&HD4850, 1 Q6600 has 1 8500GT
Only get GPU units, but use an CPU+GPU app. a 'anonymous'and run 2 WU's at 1 HD4850, the HD5770 is only useble at SETI-Bêta and Collatz C.

Set WEB and/or local preferences to GPU only or CPU+GPU sometimes called CUDA 2.3 or ATI13ATI or install an ATI/AMD GPU(+CPU) app.

I wonder how many people see the rac's and credits listed here and think "I'm wasting time here." and leave

@ Verstapp, congratz, that is indeed quite a lot;^)

@ Beezlebub, do you really think, no IMO, someone who is interested in this project itself, I won't believe that it's only for the credits, it's only a number, which does account for the 'work' you've done for that project.

I like astonomy, my father was an astromener, too.
And with 'today's possebillities concerning GPU's, that's quite a change, also according to More's law ;-), it's nice and good that it's possible to do much more work and more efficient, which is these day's very important.

Only had a few MW WU's, cause I didn't know if the SSSE3 x86 app., is compatible with XP x64 OS and BOINC 6.10.17 X64![/color]

I do understand, from what I've read in the forum pages, only a Double Precision GPU, can be used for (optimized) GPU-Crunching.

i have 4 projects running and milkyway as 5th, so might be another issue there,

Hi, my XP64 host (QX9650&9800GTX+&GTS250), runs 6 WU's, at a time, cause the SETI WU's only use 4% (0.04) of the CPU. (4x CPDN + 0.04CPU+GPU + 0.04CPU+GPU)

The difference with Collatz C.* is even bigger and Milky Way, could 'act' the same.
Depends if the WU can be run on the GPU completely, but does has to be loaded by the CPU.

Btw. I should try a SSSE3 CPU app. Is there a DownLoad Site?
Trying a HD5770 at Collatz C., it's [i]single precision, so can't use it here, unfortunatly.

Hi, I'm quite new here and my WU's are done by CPU, even tried an SSE3 optimized app., but can't see much difference. :(

And the host with an ATI HD5770, now doing Collatz C., doesn't work because it's single precision, bummer.

Also have a QX9650 & 9800GTX+ & GTS250, running XP64, but isn't supported, by default???

Seeing the RAC, some have, there has to be an NVidida (Optimized) app. , too?
