41) Questions and Answers : Windows : No new tasks in a long time, RAC is below 1,000 (Message 76729)

It's almost like the system refuses to give me new work since 6 tasks for some odd reason did not get started by the deadline (downloaded dec 3 and supposed to be reported by the 15th). But these tasks have not gone well for the others. 2 random sampled tasks have validation inconclusive. One, the second in line had a computation error (file not found on linux).

I have reset the project, expanded the days from .3 to .5 and it refuses to send work.
The other projects then take over.

Is it this project or is it BOINC or whats going on?

Set the other projects to no new tasks and then up your cache to a full day or even 2 or 3 days, then ask MilkyWay for work, then once you get it remember to set your cache back where you like it and set your other projects to get tasks again. MilkyWay task can think they will take a long time and 0.3 or even 0.5 of a day may not be enough of a cache size.

I believe buried somewhere down in all the forum threads is a post from the admin/devs that the attempt to develop a N-body gpu app was deemed infeasible and the attempt abandoned.

They need Petri's help, at least that way a Linux app would be available. It doesn't need to be incremently faster than cpu crunching, just comparable would help alot. Incremental steps can come thru time.

I thought that both Windows and Linux were currently supported ?

It is but Petri is a Linux guy only so if he was able to help he would only be able to help with a gpu app for Linux.

An issue with BAM! ? Looks like my projects are not connecting in there. I have not looked at that in a long time. I am turning that off in my clients and see if that helps.

WHY ae you using BAM? You can attache to each Project on your own, and I believe more than a couple not on BAM's list, and control how and when your computer uses Boinc.

Nothing super crazy - 2 projects - Disk usage set to 50GB of space. Do I need more. I think I just left it default from a while ago.
I thought about reinstalling - but since it is the same on both computers has to be a setting or some other issue,

I wouldn't think that at 2 projects you need more than 50gb, I'm attached to over 30 of them and am using only 64gb, you can check by going into the Boinc Manager and clicking 'Disk' at top top of the page and it will show you a graph of what Boinc is using as well as an easy to read and understand listing. If you are close to the 50gb range sure you can give it more but if you have plenty of free space now then unless you want to be attached to alot more projects then you should be okay with that setting.

I was talking about the cache settings in the Boinc Manager under options, computing preferences and then the last line on the page where it says 'store at least____days' and then where it says 'store an additional____ days of work'. ie my settings are 1 in the first box and then 0.1 in the 2nd box. In theory this should keep 1 day of work plus a little more for each Project that i receive work from, in practice not all projects strictly follow those settings but it's much better than the default of 10 and 10 days or work.

But I have reattached 4 times on both computers. It pulls some work and then that message pops up. I don't have a graphics card on my linux device - it is just a nas server running truenas scale. It was working fine for a few weeks. I do not run GPU tasks and I was not a member when they were running them.

Thanks for answering.

Are you running any other Projects on the 2 pc's? Also what are your cache size settings? If they are too small that could be a problem if you are running other projects as well.

Forgot to add - I have just been reattaching to the project and it downloads more work..
Not the right way to do it, but it works!

Actually it probably was the right way as they changed the name back to the old name without the -new in it and now you should be able to get and return tasks again. MilkyWay no longer has any gpu tasks, they dropped them in the Summer because they had enough data to write the paper they were working on and didn't need them any more. there is talk of bringing them back again but that's all it seems to be at this point.

I'm getting these errors again on this host https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=880719

I get them too, I think it's because they changed the name of the website, deleting the -new, and some pages didn't get changed back to the old name again when they reverted back to it.

With the change of servers, there is a lot missing.
I am not seeing any credits showing up, when I go look at my tasks, they are all pending validation. If I click on the work unit, the system says it can not find the work unit.

When will this be fixed?

In your case never because those tasks are gpu tasks and they are no longer available at MilkyWay, ONLY cpu tasks are available at MilkyWay now,. Actually not long after you finished those tasks and probably why you never got a wingman they said in the thread where they stopped sending them out that they were no longer needed and that they had enough data to write the paper that was the whole point of the gpu tasks. Now George found a thread a few days ago sayig that they MAY bring them back again in the future, along with hopefully an app for Mac pc's but there is NO timeline at all.

The reason you have no credits is because you have just now started running the cpu tasks that will provide those credits.

Ah..thanks Mikey. I have been to busy to follow the news. I thought it was just Nbody that got killed a long time ago, not this GPU stuff. Oh well.

No problem we can't follow everything these days!!

I rejoined after long absence and uploaded the new link. Now the work unit keeps getting stuck and the only solution is to reboot which is not always convenient, currently stuck for 3rd time after c.30% progress. WCG has the same issue after changing servers, but usually one reboot is enough

Are you using an app_config.xml file to limit the number of cpu cores the app can use? If not the one Link has is very helpful, the problem seems to be that if MilkyWay is using all of your cpu cores to crunch with then when the pc wants to do something else, ie check you mail, open a webpage etc, it stops crunching and then doesn't resume crunching again.

If I detach and re-attach to this project to correct the "milkyway-new" issue now that all my work units have been returned, do I use "http" as stated in the join link or do I use "https" as shown on the web search panel.
I am guessing "https".

Use the drop down link in the box in Boinc Manager and it's https

I’m very sorry to pull this request of deleting my bonic account for milkyway@home project. I need to do this mainly because I have done something wrong. I hope you could accept my request and delete it. Thank you!

I would be far easier to just change your account name and password to random letters and numbers that you don't write down, that way no one can get into your account and you don't need an Admins help.

Hello Kevin,

My name is George Generke, Co-Administrator of GPU Users Group, and I would like to thank you for stepping up and trying to resurrect the MilkyWay project. I realize that you have a large learning curve to deal with, but I'm sure that you will get it sorted out eventually.

Also, I would like to add that we in GPU Users Group are not complainers or do we provide unwanted feedback to MilkyWay as you refer to others that have done so. It is unfortunate, but myself and the rest of my teammates are on your side and will do what we can to help if need be.

As for your comment about "the need for better communication", I'll give you my thoughts since you asked.

I think that communication is important and I hope that you can live up to your goals that you are setting. As you work though the challenges of getting things set to right, so to speak, I think at least a little blurb about once per week would be good so that we and other members/crunchers of MilkyWay can see your attempted progress. As it comes about when you make progress towards your goals, I think that you could re-schedule your time to a more lenient time frame of maybe once per month, if for no other reason than to say "all's well".

One thing that so many of us crunchers on MilkyWay were sad to see go was the ending of GPU tasks. Many of us, including those in GPU Users Group, miss that. It did cause many to switch to a different project. Are there any plans in the future of bringing GPU tasks back to life? I think I speak for all those that do and did MilkyWay that we would welcome it back again.

Once again, I would like to give you a warm welcome and say thank you for stepping up and making the progress in learning the ways of BOINC and getting the new server online. THANK YOU!

Best regards,

George Generke

Hello everyone,

One common concern has been the need for better communication. Despite my efforts to preemptively share updates, it appears more is needed. I would like to improve in this area. I'm considering regular updates (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and would appreciate your thoughts on this. Please share your ideas in the comments on how I could improve communication.

Once again, I apologize for the recent issues with MilkyWay@home and am very thankful for your patience.

Best regards,
Kevin

My thought is a thread that does not allow replies, ie an Admin posting thread only, where you can post the goings on as well as any problems, upgrades, fixes etc but not have them get lost in the 1000 replies. I think a weekly posting would be enough unless like right now there are some problems and it would be helpful to post more often as it evolves into it's final solution. You can always post in the regular Forums as well and follow them as the posts about your post get posted. Boinc Projects tend to have people who know alot about Boinc and then alot of 'newbies' with the people in between that often just looking for 'why did it stop working when it was 2 days ago' people.

They are getting rid of the "-new" name on the Server so you either do the workaround posted above/below depending on how you read this or abort them and remove and reattach again. I have pointed this out to the Admin in the News section but they haven't responded yet.

See that milkyway-new.cs.rpi.edu is not resolving to an IP?
;milkyway-new.cs.rpi.edu. IN A

added line to hosts to map the milkyway.cs.rpi.edu to -new
128.113.126.54 milkyway-new.cs.rpi.edu

And that allowed complete work unit to be uploaded.

Don't know if a new update needs to be done??

We have changed the DNS setting such that milkyway-new no longer exists and the url milkyway.cs.rpi.edu points directly to the server IP and is not longer a cname for the server.
I am going through and changing everything on the server to reflect that change.

So how do we return completed work now that the -new address which is where the 'new' client is pointing too? If we remove and reattach all of our work will be lost.

[quote]It seems that I can eliminate the issue locally in the client by shutting down the client, removing the <scheduler_url>url</scheduler_url> line from client_state.xml, and restarting the client. But that's just a workaround of course, the real fix needs to happen on the server.

I have 17 pc's running here at my home and get that at every Project over the course of a day as I manually update them, I REALLY dislike seeing a whole page of completed tasks sitting there waiting to be returned and also dislike seeing tasks that are stuck uploading so I will keep clicking until they get returned or uploaded as the case may be. Now if your 'fix' really does fix it then I wonder if it's the change-over to https from http that is causing the problems I'm seeing at all the other projects?

It's possible but not likely in the near future, there ARE people trying a various projects to offer their assistance in getting Mac OS apps up nd running but that is not as easy as it sounds for projects with very little continuity in their Boinc support, like MilkyWay.

It appears Kevin needs to let Willy @ BAM! know what the correct URL is because it's not pointing to it.

I posted to the thread in the number crunching but apparently that info hasn't been relayed over...

Just use the one listed in the Boinc Manager and you will be fine

Go to your preferences and enable tasks for Milkyway@home N-Body Simulation

Nbody was checked on both main and work preferences. The only thing not checked was run other applications on work. I checked it, saved it and tried it again...

First try, I had a moment and smacked myself for not turning work fetch on...

Second try client requested work, but didn't get any:

[11/15/23 7:26:44 PM | Milkyway@home | [sched_op] CPU work request: 34560.00 seconds; 1.00 devices

11/15/23 7:26:47 PM | Milkyway@home | [sched_op] Deferring communication for 00:01:31

11/15/23 7:26:48 PM | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

It did an auto-try a couple mins later and failed to get any work again.

You need to delete the Project from the Boinc Manager and then add it back in agaIn thru the Boinc Manager because it slightly changed it's name when it went to the new Server and your milkyway.xml file has the old name in it.
