1) Message boards : Number crunching : Computer lags when running 5870 gpu (Message 42155)

Post:
Now i am a bit baffled by this post.
You say a 5870 and it responce is sluggish ?!?!
I am running also a 5870 and believe it or not while running any project still can do games/work/surf except when i set my games to ultra high settings.
For normal operation i have in no way any experience of a sluggish screen.
Hell even on my other old ati 4770 i can surf, wordprocess and do whatever and not even see this. Ofcourse when i start gaming on that machine i see a result.
Now to find the cause of the sluggish reaction there must be ofcourse a reason.
One reason could be that you run the card in a slower system.
For instance i was running the 5870 on a 2,4 Ghz Q6600 and when i ran 3dmark06 benchmark only got 14835 points, so i overclocked the cpu to 3,2 Ghz and the immediate result was that i got 17821 score in the same benchmark

But i think you must check for how many pci-e slots your system has if you have more then 1 slot, which slot is your video card in ?.
And second does your system has other addin cards in the normal pci slots.
If so some of these other card is maybe fighting for the same irq in your system this can be sometimes solved by changing the slot where the videocard is put in or the pci card ( mostly sound/network cards)
If you want to check if an irq is conflicting you can check for instance with hwinfo/everest/speccy or other system info programs.

I quit folding for awhile so I also stopped coming to the forums here..hence my reply just now. But now that the weather has been a bit colder here in Indiana..probably start crunching.

For my setup..you could of just looked under my name..and no I don't have Crossfire its just 1 5870 and a overclocked AMD X6 1090T to 4GHZ.

I ran some other folding projects (can't remember exactly) but my computer wasn't laggy with some of those. So its not my computer..

As far as gaming while folding..lol yea right this project takes up almost all of my GPU resources to game while this is happening would be nothing but a FPS lag fest.

For the PCI-E slot..its in the correct slot..a 16x pci-e one. I can still surf the net and stuff but there is a noticeable lag in it.

I have a question that didn't hit me till now..

Most screensavers for BOINC projects only keep showing till the current WU is finished ..then the screensaver goes away when the new WU starts crunching..what will happen if a GPU user opens up the screensaver being that it only takes me about 1:14mins to complete 1 WU?

My computer has a bit of laggyness when running the project on my 5870 card..I just tried changing the "Resource share" to 80% to see if that might help as it was set on 100% but it hasn't take effect yet. What is Resource Share for exactly?

And what is causing this slowdown?

Edit: I just saw under my tasks that I see this

Completed, validation inconclusive

Is that normal/good?

You never did say if GPU crunchers can use this screensaver in the other thread..

I ran into the same problem with my GPU..Milkyway just stresses it to much (I think more than gaming does) and the noise is unbearable.

This is me using the ASUS EAH5870 V2 card. Kinda sucks because this card can seriously kick out some power. I thought about running it while I'm at work but I don't like the idea of me running it full load like that without supervision.

And there's no dust as this is a new build. Heat on card is well within range to.

out of work. this starts to happen so often.

And its going to be out of work for awhile ..

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/server_status.php

Its got nothing to send..and with a growing number of people getting their WUs done that have yet passed validation..I imagine its going to be another mad rush when the server does get up again..

I got to say though..this is getting silly for server downtime. I think they need a new guy behind the scenes for the server or something..

To be honest I was hoping something like the Einstein@home screensaver would show up for Milkyway@home..this new screensaver doesn't look very exciting to have on a screen..although it is something I guess.

Will the people on Milkyway GPU have the screensaver option also? I imagine they could use their CPU alot more for the screensaver.

And does the screensaver take live data that is being crunched or already crunched or just showing random things on screen?

Edit: Can you upload a video sample of the screensaver?

My fault it is referred to as compute capability 1.3, which is hardware specific and only the GT200 series of GPUs support it. Also, I'm in the process of updating the application to support the progress bar, check pointing will not be supported.

Not sure what the difference is, but you guys just singled out alot of nvidia people.

The CUDA application for 32 bit Windows has been deployed on BOINC. In terms of hardware a NVIDIA GPU supporting CUDA 1.3 is required. The following GPUs: GeForce GTX 295, 285, 280, 260, Tesla S1070, C1060, Quadro Plex 2200 D2, Quadro FX 5800, 4800 are known to have CUDA 1.3 support. The GPUs also need to have 256 MB of Video RAM

Um..the 8800GT 512 meets that.

1.3 thats the key.

According to Nvidias driver download page, it has it.

The only step left is updating the server side BOINC software, once that is done the CUDA application will be released on BOINC as a beta application.

I am unable to give a time estimate for when the server side BOINC software will be upgraded because the upgrade cannot be done by me, it has to be done by the staff that controls the server that Milkyway@Home is hosted on.

Why hasn't this been done yet? How long is this Cuda app planned to be in Alpha stage?

But then I'm finding that the whole internet is slower across the board than say a year ago. I seem to remember reading somewhere that to cure that, it would cost millions to upgrade all the national backbones and international routers.

lol.

You can take your tinfoil hat off..the internet hasn't "slowed down" as a whole. You might want to change ISPs if that's how it is for you.

This problem were seeing here is simply a matter of server problems that their not addressing.

News Flash - Galaxy To Collide with Earth!

Don't worry about planets or asteroids hitting us.

I'm not claiming that a planet is going to collide with Earth..but that one might pass us by in its rotation around the milkyway.

Or the fact that some scientist are claiming that there might be a planetary alignment, that on one knows for sure whats going to happen to Earth after this..but some are saying it will shift on its axis ..another words..pole shift. OR the fact that their saying our sun will send out a heavy wave of radation thus taking out our satellites. <--Which was recently on the news btw

I love how people will discredit something without ACTUAL proof.
