Posted 25 Jun 2023 by ![]() Post: for me it is simple: have spare resources: crunch. no spare resources: don't crunchOne of my machines is for me, it does Boinc aswell whenever I'm not playing games. It's on 24/7 anyway for the security cameras. Ah so You say "Grabbing second hand and free parts and assembling computers is fun, and of course does a lot of science. " see here is the distinction - science not chasing the score this is fine even if it's a dedicated machine. But building machines just for "Must have X SCORE!!!" - that is just not what BOINC is about at all frankly - i'd crunch even if there was NO SCORE since it's for science |

Posted 21 Jun 2023 by ![]() Post: Remember this Project is run by a rotating set of college grad students and one Professor that is very busy doing other things most of the time and who himself has only been doing it for a short time, that means that the institutional knowledge that most projects have is not there at Milky Way. Yes they do okay with what they have but they don't seem to take advantage of the Boinc Forum for Admins either and instead try to figure it out on their own.I know. That's another reason to simply stop creating new work and let BOINC take care of the tasks in progress. perhaps, as link said they seem to not use the admin BOINC forums and work on their own with limited staff |

Posted 21 Jun 2023 by ![]() Post: what went down is possibly this: they TRIED to turn it off on the 20th and turned off SOMETHING but ! it was the wrong thing tu turn off and they somehow destabilized the server and now are fighting with it to keep it working and all thoughts off turning separation off got forgotten |

Posted 20 Jun 2023 by ![]() Post: this might be obvious but i will mention it anyway: in most enterprise and or scientific environments servers are not bespoke consumer pc's those are dedicated platforms, often configured in a specific way. one physical server can and usually does run multiple components such as database engine, work generator or website frontend. physically shutting down the system will bring it ALL down not just "not needed anymore" stuff. and to bring offline certain modules which are interconnected to other subsystems like say a database is no trivial matter and must be done slowly and with precision to avoid data corruption, which is not a trivial matter especially if the admin team is small. Bear in mind that a scientist using the data does NOT have to understand how the core BOINC server operates. |
