I tried it with your app_info file and it showed like your display but the MW wouldn't start. It went into "waiting to start" mode and I couldn't get it to kick off. Any ideas?

in preferences, is the use GPU while computer is in use checked?

I have the "server" set to no shut down GPU during use. Is there a local preference switch under Advanced Preferences in 6.10.0? I went back to 6.4.7 and that of course isn't an option there. If there is one in 6.10.0 then I probably missed it and that would be the problem.

UPDATE
I reinstalled it and it kicked off like it was supposed to so the problem is solved. It may have been the prefernce setting. Or maybe it just wanted to hassle me .... whatever I'm running now.
Thanks

I'm running the same setup; I7 920 w/ 4850 and don't have any trouble.

Try BOINC 6.4.7 and CAT 8.12. I had similar problems before that was recommended to me.

I run AQUA on the CPU and limit the number of processors to 7. This keeps the GPU running at 98% loading. If I open up all 8 processors the GPU loading drops to 85% due to AQUA hogging the resources.

Hope this helps!

Now guys you were supposed to say; "You idiot if you change your settings to .... then everything works fine!"

You're absolutely no help! I know it must be something I'm doing wrong because it couldn't possibly be BOINC.

Actually I'm wondering if the project has to do something to tag the wu as GPU so BOINC knows how they should be handled.

I tired 6.10.0 tonight and couldn't get it to work. It would run either AQUA CPU or MW GPU but not both at the same time. It did load a full 48 unit cache for MW but all units went into waiting to start. If I suspended the cpu task it would start and run fine but would once I resumed the cpu again it would go to waiting.

Is there a setting I'm missing or something I need to do to get both to run simultaneously?

Did I miss something? Which version?

I had hoped that the manager would simply report the completed task and fetch a new Aqua but it just didn't happen. -

I have the same problem with AQUA. It will finish a unit and do an upload but if you look in "Project" you will see that it has deferred communications ... sometimes as much as 1 3/4 hours. If you are running long units it isn't a problem but if your next unit takes less than that time then it will upload that unit and NOT download more work. Gets frustrating to say the least.

I left a note on the AQUA formum that they need deeper cache setting (more than 2) when running the short units. They replied back that they had the cache increased to 10 for the shorties BUT there are 200 qubit units in the que so they dropped it back to 2.

One thing of importance, they have corrected the DCF problem so AQUA units aren't running in "high priority" mode any longer. AQUA is playing nicely with other apps and not stealing all processors. This should eliminate the need to suspend a 2nd cached unit.

Poorboy, as I said I have no problem running my I7 as long as I limit CPUs to 7. I'm running 6.4.7 and CAT 8.12. I have the cache etc set to 2 day connect to internet and 5.00 day cache. Set the "Switch between applications" to 5.00 minutes.

If I don't change DFC in the client file then it goes to 100 on AQUA and it will only load 1 AQUA unit into the machine at a time. If I drop that below 80 it will download the 2nd unit. So I've typically got 1 AQUA unit at a time and then the MW cache varies between 5 and 48. I added a config file to force immediate upload of completed units. Otherwise AQUA will sometimes upload the finished unit but BOINC waits up to several hours to complete the "report" and download a new unit. With the config file it does the upload, immediately reports, and download the next wu.

My system has been running for days without a hiccup other than my danged DSL has dropped out 4 times in the past 5 days following a lightning strike.

One other thing of note, if you drop you CPU from 8 to 7 even though the benchmark in "messages" says you are using 7 processors in reality the AQUA unit will not release the 8th one till it is finished. The NEXT wu will only use 7 processors.

I've been running 6.6.20 on all my Box's, that seems to work ok for the NVIDIA equipped Box's but the ATI Card Equipped Box have had their troubles since going to the 6.6.20 Client. I just switched the i7 back to the 6.5.0 Client which I ran for a long time with no problems, Figured it couldn't run any worse than the 6.6.20 Client. Will see how that does over night with the i7 ...

Poorboy, I'm running 6.4.7 with my I7 and have no problems. I run AQUA cpu and MW GPU full time. I limit the cores to 7 which keeps AQUA from taking over and slowing down the GPU card. It drops the cpu down to 82% load but that is less loss of credits than the 7% hit I take on the GPU if I enable all 8 cores.

Also, I'm running CAT 8.12 for the card.

Well for me it wasn't all bad. I came down to the computer this morning and found that Windows update had done its thing automatically at 3 am and rebooted the computer. Of course I had start BOINC at startup unchecked so it was down. I could have sworn that I had the auto install turned off.

Anyway, it is better to happen the same morning rather than 2 different days! Auto install is now definitely off and start at Win startup is on!

Can you run CPUs and GPUs simultaneously? If so, I assume you need to modify (merge) the 2 different app_info.xml files together. How is this done?

I want to run both the .19f optimized GPU and SSE4.1 optimized CPU app.

Les, John and I are running Vista 64 and the combination of 6.4.7 and 8.12 works very well on the 64 bit system I have been running for almost 24 hours now and my 4850 is cranking over 3000 credits per hour. There have been NO hangups or errors during that time.

I'm afraid I can't answer your questions about 32 bit Vista. I hope your find a solution, I definitely understand how frustrating it can be!

There is joy in Mudville ... Casey has parked the sucker! Looks like the combination of 6.4.7 and Cat 8.12 is stable. I've been watching for an hour and haven't seen the system hang or produce an error of any type.

I owe you one John. This has been a very frustrating couple of days trying to get this to work right.

Take care,

Thanks John! I changed over to 6.4.7 and it works MUCH better than 6.6.31 but I'm still seeing the system freeze about every 20 minutes. It hangs for about 3 minutes and then continues right where it left off. I think I will reinstall 8.12 again and give that a try. But I'm much closer than before.

Does your mgr. show that all of your units are runninig in "high priority" mode? That is what I'm showing.

John, I looked at your tasks and it appears your are running BOINC 6.4.7. Is this correct? I'm running 6.6.31 and that could possibly be the problem. At this point I will try anything.

running Vista 64 and is doing well...stock Dell XPS with a 4850 in it...I will check which version of the driver I am using when I get home this evening.

Thanks John, I'm having little luck with it. I'm also running a 4850, Vista 64. and I7 920. I've tried 8.12, 9.2, 9.5, and 9.6. The closest to working right is 9.5 but it has problems also.

There are at least 4 on this thread that are having problems with Vista 64,

Is GPU app 0.20 coming out soon?
If this thing does not begin to work I´m going to change to nVidia cards :(

I think not as long as the ATI cards produce good results and there is not pressure on the servers.

I think the CUDA (nVidia) and ATI_GPU software will have a low priority ATM.

I think what he is asking is will there be an upgrade to the current code that is actually stable on Vista 64. .19f does not seem to work on a number of Vista 64 systems.

One other thing I've notice is how the downloads are put into the cache. They are being placed into the #2 to #8 spots rather than at the bottom of the 48 units. I don't know if this is a function BOINC or the GPU app. When I was running just CPUs I don't remember seeing it do this, but then again I can't be certain that I ever paid attention to that detail.

This explains why I have seen BOINC go into the panic mode and run units with high priority.
