41) Message boards : News : New Modfit Runs (Message 63085)

What would you recommend to set for CPU usage for the GPU projects? Do they each really need a whole CPU core, or can the GPUs share a single core between them?

My experience is that leaving a core free to feed the GPU adds so little output that it's not worth doing, I prefer to run a single CPU project on all cores and a single GPU project on the card. I run as few projects as possible at any one time to eliminate any issues with Boinc wanting to switch between them, KISS at work.

It seems to me that your measurement of optimization of the overall output includes receiving the maximum credit from a given project, a nice objective goal. But many major crunchers will tell you that the easiest way achieve this is to:
A. keep it simple
B. set it and forget it

You've done what you can. Let it run for a year and come back to see where you are. I have no doubt you will be well pleased.

The HD4800 series card supports OpenCL version 1.0. I think Milky Way requires version 1.1

"Validation Inconclusive" simply means that they are waiting for someone else to confirm your result, it is not the same as a validation error.

Me too. Seemingly the WU barely starts and is stopped to start another. Is there a download error?

Your card does not support the double precision necessary for this project.

And we have a winner! It's Phil!

The current game ended at the close of pheasant hunting season here is Minnesota. Phil has the last post, so he has the honor and privilege of running the next game.

Congratulations Phil

....the runs might not fully utilize your GPU. ...try configuring your GPU to run 2 of these at the same time...

Jake

Uhm, is there a tutorial for that?

Copy this in Notepad (not Word):

<app_config>
<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.05</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.05</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Save the file as "app-config.xml" and place the file here:
(Unhide your folders if you haven't already)
Program data\Boinc\Projects\MilkyWay
Restart Boinc and you'll be running two at a time.

Yes AMD purchased ATI. As far as a card to your specs, I do not know of one that is able to calculate with the double precision required by MW. Even if there is one, I would expect it to be used. Do some research here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units and then look on ebay?

Let the Bitcoin Utopis run run down with out getting any new WUs from it. The MW units should increase then to a maximum of 40.

56) Message boards : Number crunching : Computation ERROR (Message 62650)
Posted 30 Oct 2014 by swiftmallard
Post:
I have the Geforce GTX 260 card, and with windows 7 Ultimate. And the CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo on 2,80 Ghz. I can see that basicly all of my Milkyway@home packages are calculated/crunched with errors ("Computation error"). I have just installed the windows 7 Ultimate because of a change from HDD to an Samsung SSD 250 GB. So that's also why Boinc and the NVidia drivers is brand new (Boinc ver.7.2.42 (x64) and NVIDIA ver. 340.52).

Erhm...Is a old member of Seti@home, but new to Milkyway@home. Hope you can sort this problem out with "Computation Error" somehow if possible.

BTW, is it possible to have some kind of graphic or screensaver to Milkyway@home?

Plus, where can you see the result of the 3D model of the universe? I have 3D Studio Max, and Maya, and Google Earth is that's possible to view with it. But I guess you're using some other kind of software to view it.
Thanks... Regards from Tom Pedersen

I'm not familiar with nvidia but I suspect the new drivers are a problem. You may need to downgrade them to crunch effectively. Drivers are developed for gamers, not crunchers, and newer is not necessarily better.
There is no screensaver for this project.

Hi Jake. Thanks.
In addition to the extraordinary length of time being estimated, my other "concern" is that I have no other tasks being queued. Maybe this is a function of the time estimate (?)

There is no maybe about it. I always abort n-body WUs that take longer than 24 hours.

Thanks for the info Mikey.
I have a problem though this morning; the 7770 refuses to start up again.

How many watts is your power supply? If you have a 2nd monitor plug it into the 7770 when Windows starts up and see if that helps, you can remove it after Windows is up and running. They make monitor extension cables.

Could this b a time where a dummy plug might help?

Does the line below your preferences look like this?
If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? no
If not, you will get Modified Fit tasks when the others run low.
