hi,

I started out here with one 4970 then added another 2 to the same box then moved the whole lot to DNETC for a change as i kept running out of work every time milkyway hit a tiny server hiccup
after getting myself a 5970 and finding after months no way of getting it to stop hanging every so often i've came back here on holiday lol

my questions are is it just me or is it the case your only given 6 wu per core on your cpu again as i thought it had been upped to more than that ?

with my card this gives me 12 mins of work which is pretty useless as a back up for any kind of outage

i dont run any kinds of apps because on my 4970's they only added a tiny bit in performance terms if any at all but i've had a look and people running 5970's seem to be getting some sort of huge performance boost with one of the apps
my card gets through each _17 work unit in about 130 seconds which i thought was quite good until i saw some peoples apps were getting this down to 230 for what i asume is an app running twice the wu at the same time
that would mean a time of around 115 seconds for each wu crunched some 15 seconds faster than mine

am i missing something about the apps doing wonderful for a 5970 that never happened with my 4970's ?

and if so can somebody point me to that spacific app please lol

best regards everybody

23) Message boards : Number crunching : temperature and fan speed dials missing ? (Message 41108)

hi,

Afterburner sorted one problem i.e. the memery clock which i got down to 760 from 1000 which was nice but could have been more

unfortunately it wont let me play with the fan speed it just sits their at 30 percent with no slider to speed it up a couple of percent

temps are sitting at 80 on full load but the ambient temp is not high in here yet when summer truly hits i can see those temps hurtling up to and above 90 degrees quite easily which is no good :(

it seems a monumental cock up that ati have shipped there latest flag ship card with not even the control panel my 4890's have !

hi,

got a new card ( second hand ) the 5970 but when i installed the drivers i was given the control panal does not show the three dials in the overdrive section it only shows activity not temp or fan speed which are pretty much the important ones ( well the temp is )
plus it wont allow me to lower the memory clock below 1000 which cant be correct

i downloaded the 10.3 catalyst drivers as seemingly later versions come up buggy with windows7 64 bit sometimes but no change

has anybody ever heard of such a thing or better still how to fix it ?

Hi,

Thanks again for all that interesting info
i run an i7 920 using all 8 virtual cores at a standard overclock for this chip of 4 gig on air cooling
the funny thing was i could run the climate models ok then switch them off and run all three gpu's on here slightly overclocked but when i try to run both after about 30 mins things pear shaped
what seems to happen along with the pc freezing is one of the cards fans goes into overdrive so it may be a problem with one of the cards knocking out the rest of the system
will have to do some serious hardware tinkering to test the cards seperately to see if thats whats going on

thanks again

Ian

Hi,

spot on, because the machine kept hanging i stopped all the climate models and it seems only running milkyway runs the cards alot harder and therefore alot hotter
i had read that there was a small performance drain running both cpu work and gpu work but never thought it would have such a big effect

activity on the cards went from 99% to between 93% and 95% on each card wich is quite a drop just hope the gpu work doesnt effect the cpu climate models in the same way although they take so long to show any differance it would take several days for any changes to show up

thank you for your explanation it was a real eye opener

hello,
my pc began to freeze last night when started after a few hours the graphics cards fans would go wild and the pc would freeze again
On testing today i find the work units are running 99% activity around 10% higher than usual and are complete in 15 seconds less time
all three cards are doing this and all three are overheating for some reason

so are the work units more compressed or something needing more work done and taking less time to do them ?

great idea but in my case my rig with three crossfired cards wont run the other two projects so if this one dies thats it :(

Hello,

I must admit not usually being a complainer but having to baby sit this project through server downtime is a bit of a pain now
I would really like to just hook the system up leave it crunching and forget about it but now find myself having to check up on it way to often

more workunits per core has been discussed and ruled out the above suggestion of longer work units would cure two problems 1. less down time for our machines 2. less spin down down and spin up between work units
this idea also doesnt seem to be getting any attention for some reason

collatz doesnt quite give the same credit but seems online more often than here and dnetc seems to give more credit per gpu work done using longer work units

I'm stuck here just now because neither of the two projects above will work with my 3 ATI cards in crossfire but the longer this fiasco with the server carries on the more likely I am to set up another couple of machines splitting the cards so they each can work on the projects above

hopefully the hardware IT dept will announce on here there next set of upgrades soon so we can have a more consistant flow of work

Hello,

This is rediculous half on half off !!
Some work really needs to be done to the continuous output of work from the server on this project

Hi,

nice one Travis I know some more people that will be interested in the biological project that dont feel an interest in the astrophysics domain

thank you for the instructions on how to set up the manager still wondering how the manager knows to stop all work on collatz ( or the new project ) when milkyway does send new work
and what happens if the collatz wu get out of date before worked on wont they just fail to complete and waste time being crunched ?

Hello,

managed to get that version downloaded and installed
now can you please tell me where you set it to back up project work as i've been all through the preferances and its exactly the same as you get on your project server preferance page
no extra controls on how the work is allocated etc

Hello,

i want to use collatz as a backup project
i set bam resourses to 0 for collatz and the rest here
unfortunately collatz has downloaded loads of work units ( more than 24 hours worth ) and now that MW is sending out work it's still doing the collatz wu

and when it finishes each collatz wu its downloading another so looks like it has no intention of starting mw up again

i'm running 6.10.18 and not 6.10.56 is that whats making this trick not work ?

Hello

Sorry no big fancy graphics or massive claims on credit as our team hasn't been doing GPU projects long weve spent years doing pretty much every other cpu project theres been .

But were here now so if youd like to take a look at a very young team in GPU terms please press the link below and just take a peek you never know you might like what you see

37) Message boards : Number crunching : Anybody got any ideas on lowering ambient room temps (Message 39906)

Hi,

I'm using all sorts of fans aimed at the gpu fans to cool them but the ambient temps in the room mean that there just blowing hot air back in the box :(

its a fairly big room with all the windows open in the house just now in Scotland theres not a breath of fresh air anywhere in fact i think the air coming in the windows is adding to the problem mid afternoon :(

so is there anybody out there thats come up with some good ideas to try and cope with all this ambient heat

hi,

i run 3 cards have run them in x-fire and not with no dummy plugs or seperate monitors or anything they just work ......... but

i think i may have the same problem you have with the machine grinding to a halt with collatz to which nobody has an answer apart from windows 7 having a problem of some sort

i'm just wondering in my case and maybe yours if this is not a power issue
my cards use around 260 watts plus on full load i'm also using an intel i7 920 clocked at 4 gig which might be around the 150 watt mark all on its own
that totals conservitivly around 900 to 950 watts and i use a corsair 950 watt power supply

so maybe i'm using even more than i think maybe closer to 300 watts per card on full tilt in that case were well over the corsairs happy zone

i'm going to try taking a card out of the system just incase its power supply related and thought i'd mention it to you incase maybe you were overunning the power supply you have without knowing it

best regards
Ian
