Crab, thanks for these posts. I have a couple of oil cooling blocks on order for my 5970's. When they arrive I will OC the core to 1000. Its ~25 degrees here so I don't want to go far on the aircooled version.

Thanks.

You are, in fact, not configuring your computer via the web browser. What you are doing is telling the server not to send you CPU tasks to crunch. It all seems quite logical to me.

Yep getting rid of the screen saver fixed that problem for me as well. I now turn the monitors off the old fashioned way, I use the power switch on them.
64) Message boards : Number crunching : Now that we have native ATI GPU support, how about longer tasks? (Message 35737)

I also think we should ask Gipsel/Cluster Physik nicely if he will implement checkpointing in the app as longer tasks will definitely need it.

I second that request. 25%, 50% and 75% would be my wish, thanks.

Travis, you da man!

All running at .05CPU now. CPU usage bouncing mainly between 1 and 4% with occasional spikes into double figures. Good enough for me to use full time now.

I will be bringing down a box next week to convert to double oil cooled 5970's, so will try the new apps out on that to see how we go.

I installed another 5970 card into an i7 box, bring the total up to four GPU's. detatched and reattached got all four running on the new apps. BOINC told me I was using .81 CPU for each WU and THREE of my (eight) CPDN models were listed as waiting for memory.

Needless to say I reinstalled the .20b opti apps, and now back to a normal .05CPU per Wu, with all eight CPDN models running.

So a little more fine tuning needed on the new apps before they are ready for the prime time I think.

PS: my 4850 dual core is running .38CPU's per WU. I wonder if it is the GPU's being utilized, or the fact they are running on a quad core Phenom?

All the GTX models 260 up can handle double precision. The GTS models can't.

A GTS 250 has only single precision and will not run milkyway. You can run Seti or Collatz and some others with it though. As to running the on board graphics, look at your system BIOS.

Thanks, I stand corrected, AMD rules.

There are other threads about this subject, but on the hardware side if you are running cuda you need a GTX260 or up, if you are ATI based you need 48XX or up.

If you are thinking to purchase hardware for this project, get ATI equipment as their cards are way faster than cuda.

As to why use double precision? The projects deals in astronomical distances, and single precision does NOT give the accuracy provided.

Cheers

lol, I couldn't resist detaching and reattaching to see what happened.

Sure enough I get the .38 CPU message. However, actual usage is now bouncing between 9 and 15%. That is on two 4850 GPU's. On my extensive sample (2 WU's) the finishing times seem to be the same. At least they are downloading regularly so I will let it run.

OK then, thanks for the clarification, I had better stay where I am until it is all sorted out.

Well I run 4 x 5970 GPU's for a hit of 2 - 3% for ALL system uses. I have no problem running eight climate models on my i7. Boinc reports it is using .05% CPU per GPU task.

5970's going flat out, BUT 4850 has stopped downloading WU's.

All 8 5970 GPU's and 2 4850 GPU's crunching flat out here. :-)

Well I have my twin 5970's running flat out on MW now. I got around the three GPU problem by enabling Crossfire AND connecting the Crossfire cable.

The problem is that I cannot run any Collatz as the system slows to like 45 hours per WU. Running one at a time I get times of around 6:52 per WU. Running two increases the time to ~14 minutes per WU. Three runs out to ages and a really jerky mouse.

I expect I could restore Collatz by simply removing the bridge, but sheesh, talk about manual control lol.

I expect my oil cooling blocks to arrive at the end of this month, so it will be interesting to see how these go. In the meantime I am swapping out all the Nvida 295, 260 crap and replacing it with another couple of 5970's, so I can reduce my power consumption by a coupe of hundred watts and increase throughput. It's all good. hahaha.

I second this approach, as it gives the user some control over what they do.
