1) Message boards : Number crunching : Sudden mass of WU's finishing with Computation Error (Message 34309)

If I take a closer look to the users that suffer from invalid results then I see that, apart from salyavin, who is not answering my PM to run a few more WUs, all machines are running WinXP or Win2003, which is nothing else than WinXP for server. Even WinXP x64 seems to have the same problem with MW. And it's not about service packs because there are WinXP machines with SP2 and SP3 that have invalid results. All others seem to have different problems like 0x1 errors (incorrect function) or others. If not, my theory is invalid.

Your theory seems to be correct. I'm running my machine with Win XP64 SP2 (There's no SP3 for the 64bit-version.). Most of the WUs were invalid. I reduced the CPU-load, increased the system memory from 6 up to 10 GB, tried all possible combinations of BOINC and graphic driver-versions and other things. In the meantime it looks like that the MW-CUDA-app isn't ver happy with XP...

I have a GTX280 at standard speed rates, installed in a slightly overclocked Q9550-system with Win XP64 on it.
Boinc version: 6.10.11
NVIDIA driver: 190.62

I got the same errors as XJR-Maniac... WUs completed, but most of them marked as invalid. Fitness: -1.#QNAN... No shared memory errors or something similar. My next step is to update BOINC and the NVIDIA driver, but after reading this thread I don't believe that I will have more success than all others here. SETI and other CUDA-based apps work fine.
If anyone finds the reason please let me know...

I updated the client to 6.10.11 and everything work fine now. Even the calculation errors, which happen after WU restart, are gone. Thanks a lot!

upcoming cards will probably be a lot faster, especially considering nvidia's public statements that say they want to focus on GPGPU.
I'm waiting impatiently for the new NVIDIA-series. Extremly curious about the performance and the new features this series can provide for us... ;)

Many thanks for the fast replies!

I will update to 6.10.7 when I come home and see what will happen.

Even a HD3870 completes the longest WUs in just over 2 minutes.
2 minutes?! I own a GTX280 and the calculation time of most WUs is around 6 minutes...

Hi!

Only a suggestion, but how about 1 or 2 checkpoints in the GPU-apps?!?!

I use the BOINC-Client 6.10.4 (dev. edition) 'cause the 6.6.38 made some troubles. Now I have the problem that every time the client gets new WUs, the active GPU-unit break up the calculation and the last new downloaded one starts. So a lot of precious calc time and energy (GPUs aren't energy savers!) get lost and some units restart up to 15 times until they get finished. Calc time up to 1 hour!!!

Or is there a workaround to prevent this behaviour?!

Greetz!
