1) Message boards : Number crunching : Linux or Windows? (Message 56191)

Hello,
i have a simple question.
which OS is preferable for the new system with HD 79x0 card?
i like linux, but is there any speed advantage for win client over linux client?

I thought it was due to excess voltage on core.

blue screen was because it was insufficient voltare for GPU for a given frequency. GPUs a differ from chip to chip, so if one is OK for certain freq/volt, but another is not OK and need even more higher voltage. and don't forget, i run mine in a very cold air, so it's temperature did not exceed 36-38C under full load.

btw, i have many window's crushes before i find necessary voltage for a stable work at 1100 mhz. i think you should not worry about hardware damage, it is very unlikely in your case.

btw, 1100 mhz @ 1.275 V, however, is not stable enough, so i reduce it to 1064 MHZ @ 1.25 V.

David, what liquid cooling system do you use?

David, which motherboard are you using to have 3 PCIe slots? I know there are several, I'm just interested to know what you've got. Regards....

5970 has two GPUs, but use only one PCIe slot.

I have a couple of oil cooling blocks on order for my 5970's. When they arrive I will OC the core to 1000.

AFAIK, water has better thermal capacity when oil. anyway, i think 1000 MHz should be easily to achieve.

How did you take it to 1105? It doesn't let me pass even 1000 while using MSI, due to CCC?

just latest msi afterburner and ati drivers downloaded 3 weeks ago. ccc not used.

but i have read yesterday what it is possible to edit MSIAfterburner.cfg file.
"EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0" should be "1".

i think this will helps.

of course, use ovetclocking and overvoltaging at you own risk. i have very good natural cooling (-20C) for it.
let us know about your results ;)

Would you tell me the core clock and voltage please?

of course =). core at 1.274 V, 1105 Mhz (i.e. 850+30%), memory downclocked to 900Mhz. PC stands at loggia (not sure exactly for this word). fan run at 75%, GPU temperature is 38C under full load. where is because -25C outside.

i think 1105 is not a limit. but let it be tested at this clock at first =)

btw. i use MSI afterburner for overclock this.

ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress)(CAL version 1.4.515, 1024MB, 3536 GFLOPS peak)

crunches WUs for 66-67 seconds. stock cooler. thanks winter =)

Make sure in "Power Options" in the Control Panel, it's not set to shut down monitor after xx minutes.

for example, in my case this option just works. it switches off the monitor after 10 minutes and MW gpu client does not losing gpu chip, just continue to crunching. and there is no problems when i manually switch off monitor and i do it very frequently. MSI 5870, xp sp3, latest ati drivers 9.12, screen saver set to "blank screen" after 5 minutes, and power setting is to turn off display after 10 minutes.

oh, i have same gpu losing problem, then my primary graphics was NVIDIA and ATI was secondary and in control panel there was set no secondary display. in what case boinc can't find ATI gpu.

I applied a patch to the server which should hopefully fix the CPU utilization of the GPU apps. Let me know how it works out.

should we have to download something (i.e. patch) ?
14) Message boards : Number crunching : Now that we have native ATI GPU support, how about longer tasks? (Message 35771)
Posted 18 Jan 2010 by Crab
Post:
in short: yes, we need a longer gpu's tasks, checkpoints (for not very fast gpu) and a shorter tasks for cpu.

and regarding WU's validation. what if i'm overclock my gpu and it becomes produce results with errors. me and you will never know of this errors?
15) Message boards : Number crunching : computer freezes when suspending milkyway (HD 5970) (Message 35770)

usually this happen then graphic board memory or GPU itself has an errors (because of overheading, for example). i thinks, you need to check it with special utility or/and with different gpu benchmarks.
ha, wait! recently once i got same vertical stripes when crunching MW on my 5870. i think, i have to check my board too! =)
btw, my pc doesn't freeze after that stripes. it continues to work and restart helps, stripes has gone.

(Could we create a sticky about what cards are supported or put that information on the front page?)

i think both. and the BOINC page really says next:

------------------------------------------------------------
Projects with NVIDIA applications:
...
Milkyway@home
...

Projects with ATI applications:
Collatz Conjecture
Milkyway@home (coming soon)
------------------------------------------------------------

and the "coming soon" is funny.

all new GPUs can handle double precision math.

radeon 57xx can't, new 40 nm GT 2xx can't (as far, as i know).

and i think the number of users who have 57xx much more when those who have 58xx.

any proof link?

XP

>Is your monitor plugged into the ATI or the nVidia (I presume the nVidia as you want to see the desktop on it).

monitor is plugged to nvidia of course.

>Do you have a dummy vga plug in the ATI card or a monitor? i.e. is there something plugged into the card.

yes. the problem was what desktop was not extended to ati, so windows disables ati gpu. now it is ok, desktop is extended to ati, and ati crunching =)

thanks all! =)
