1) Message boards : Number crunching : No new Milkyway gpu WU's (Message 69754)

Post:
I have 47 on the hdd and 3 in progress on My Win 7 Pro x64 triple 1660Ti system, I am running Boinc Tasks 1.80 and Boinc 7.14.2 cause of the stupid nag line in 7.16 about not doing cpu work...

The nvidia driver I use is 431.60 and is good enough for the 1660Ti or the 2060 Super.

So why am I not getting any new wu's?

Is there a server issue, or has Milkyway simply run out of gpu work?

Cpu work here tends to go into High P. idling all but one of My gpus and this can happen cause of a power failure or a cable internet interruption,
so I don't do cpu work anymore.

Now all 3 Gigabyte GTX 1660Ti Gaming OC video cards are crunching Milkyway wu's and each is doing 0.966.

I could install a 4th card, but the spacing between cards would be about 1/8 of an inch which is pretty narrow.

2 of My 3 Gigabyte 1660Ti cards are now crunching at the same time and both are doing 0.966.

It's just the 3 Gigabyte GTX 1660Ti cards and each card now has its own pcie power cable.

And I changed the cc config "use all gpus" setting back to stock.

The two 970 cards are off on a cart and not installed in any PC at present.

I'm going to pull the 3rd 1660Ti card on Thursday and insert a 1660TI card that needs minor testing to make sure Windows and Boinc sees the card.

Just changing the cables was all I could do today.

For now just Milkyway is being run on this host.

I do have a Hex core Intel Xeon 1650 v2 @ 3.7GHz cpu and I'm down to 74 cpu wu's with Milkyway which is set to no new tasks to get rid of the debt. I never had debt problems during My 17 years @ Seti.
I'm at 50% of cpus, I could push the Xeon to 7 or 8 cpus(58% or 66%) if needed instead of just 6.

The deadlines are 4-18-2020, 4-19-2020, and 4-20-2020.

Boinc here uses 0.966 on the 1660Ti cards, My cable company had an outage when I had the Asus 970 Turbo and the Palit 970 Blower installed and after the outage this debt happened, the two 970 cards were doing 0.953.

The Asus 970 Turbo is a White and Red card.
The Palit 970 Blower is an all Black card.

Well what you posted and what your picture shows is very different. You stated you had a pair of 970's. Then said one was slower than the other. That made no sense because both are 970's.

But your picture shows 3 cards of indeterminate type. If the third card is different, slower or faster than the 970 pair, you will have to use the use_all_gpus parameter in cc_config.

You should never share PCIe cables between cards. A card needs either 1 or 2 cables directly from the power supply to satisfy the power requirements of the card.

You say one card is not showing any load probably is because it is power limiting itself because of insufficient input PCIe power.

First thing you should always check is "do all cards get detected by BOINC at startup in the Log"? If not, investigate why. Drivers not loaded usually is the issue.

I didn't have the energy to take a pic of the two 970's please forgive.

The 3 pictured are what is in the case now.

Actually the 970's had the lower or 2nd card not showing any load after High P. showed up.

The two lower 1660TI's are not doing anything either.

I'll correct the cable situation asap.

All 3 cards are detected by Boinc and by Windows.

The 970's since removed were an Asus Turbo and a Palit Blower card, the Turbo is somewhat faster.

So the 300MHz core clock and the 405MHz memory clock on the lower 2 cards and those two cards are sharing a pcie power cable, probably doesn't mean much, beyond raising My anxiety?

Ok.

On the debt I set tasks to No New Work until the cpu debt is resolved. The gpu being as fast as it is @ 1995- 2010MHz only for the top card so far, the gpu(s) does not have any debt, yet, though there are 798 wu's waiting for the gpus and 100 for Hex core cpu. I think I might set Boinc to use more cpus, rather than the 33% Boinc is set for now, like maybe 45-50% to try and reduce the cpu debt quicker.

One thing I wish I could do was to set the cpu at no new work and let the gpu do what it wants, but I don't think Boinc is going to allow that. At least not yet.

I do know the "new" top card seems to be doing the numbers at about the same rate as the one it replaced and for less heat, the new card is cooler and in more than one way.

I do notice in gpu-z v2.30.0 that the bottom card says 1500MHz for a couple seconds, then drops to 300MHz like the middle card is running at, I could power the PC down later when there is more light and plug two more pcie cables in, the 4th cable would be just in case I want to try and tackle a 4th card again.

I mean 42-44C vs 54-60C, It's no contest. 12nm gpus, My cpu is running at 41-44C w/a 200MHz overclock, I can imagine 7nm ought to be really cool.

I'm curious would 4 of these cards in the same case hurt anything thermally?

With 4 cards that's about 1/8 inch of separation between the cards then, instead of a slots worth of space with 3 cards like seen in the pic below.

This case bows out in the back, getting the case and the brackets to line up for a screw is hard.

Here's the 3 cards in the case, click on the pic for a larger 1920x1440 sized pic.
That's a Seasonic 1050w SnowSilent Platinum, a good psu, not a lick of problems before this debt showed it's head, which I suspect was caused by the internet outage Spectrum had on Tuesday.

Ok I have 2 gpu cards, a pair of Nvidia 970 cards, before 12 noon I was doing 2 at a time or 1 per gpu, yet now only gpu 0 is doing any work and gpu 1 is doing nothing, the cpu is in high priority mode of course after the internet was offline for a few hours, it's a 1650 v2 cpu. The temp of gpu 1 at idle is 32C, gpu 0 is 57C while running.

I crunched numbers for Seti@Home for years and didn't have this problem. The cc config is set to use all gpus since one gpu is slower than the other.
Both gpus are seen by Boinc 7.14.2.

Running 2 at a time on both cards with 290.53, I averaged around 790 seconds or so.
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=344435

That is 1 GTX460/768 and 1 GTX560/1024.

When I get My GTX460 2win card, or maybe I'll go to 290.53 later on as it's on the hdd here(before the card gets here), I'm moving away from pre fermi chips, I have one more GTX460 to win today, It's a PNY card w/1GB and It's a reference board, which means unlike the 2win card, the PNY can be water cooled, aquacomputers said if there was enough demand for a water block they'd make one for the EVGA GTX460 2win card.

Well Ok I see someone else has gone all Beta or maybe that should be Alpha, I'm getting 97-98% cpu use(295) and about 78%(285) while doing a gpu app.
It's yet another Nvidia driver problem introduced in 270.something

Sorry, but My experience with Open CL is all beta so far, so 27x.xx is a problem, would 290.53 do better? I won't touch 28x.xx as that only gave Me reboot Bsods. I've tried 266.58 with Boinc not seeing any cards. An AP Nvidia app over at S@H is only usable with 266.58 or earlier and using It with 27x.xx or newer caused driver crashes as It was only certified to with pre 27x.xx drivers so far and it's an Open CL app too. Otherwise CAL is all that will work for Me and I think You've possibly abandoned that, unless I'm wrong on that, Open CL seems to have some teething problems and the latest 295.51 beta driver is not good as it seems to have some serious problems I've read, I think Arky can confirm this.

I've updated all of the separation applications to 1.00. For changes people might care about,
    - The old CAL version is gone; it's replaced with the OpenCL application. On AMD/ATI GPUs (older than 79xx) it is using some hackery to use the same IL kernel as before so it should be as fast. However this also means the Radeon 38xx cards aren't supported with new stuff.

    - Radeon 79xx stuff should work

    - The occasional validate errors from empty / truncated stderr should stop

    - AVX will be used if available on Linux and Windows (64 bit only for Windows)

    - I've increased the default GPU target frequency so GPU stuff should make things less laggy on average. You can now also configure this with the web preferences now so you don't need to use app_info stuff if you want to play with that.

    - Partial workaround with high CPU usage with recent Nvidia drivers.*

As usual post problems you run into here.

* It should cut down on the CPU usage a bit while not sacrificing too much. I would recommend not using it unless you are very unhappy with the CPU usage on Nvidia. There are options to change the polling mode if you want to lower the CPU usage further while not slowing it down. (--gpu-wait-factor (default = 0.75) and --gpu-polling-mode (default = - 2) work similarly to how they did with the old CAL one, but slightly different). With the default of -2 it will use mode -1 unless it is an Nvidia driver newer than the one that introduced the high CPU issue, where it will use mode 0. Mode -1 uses the correct waiting method, mode 0 use the correct waiting method with an initial sleep based on time estimates, and modes > 0 are a polling period in milliseconds. The wait factor is a sort of correction of the time estimate used for the initial wait. The default is 0.75, to wait for 75% of the estimated time before trying to poll.

Well Ok I see someone else has gone all Beta or maybe that should be Alpha, I'm getting 97-98% cpu use(295) and about 78%(285) while doing a gpu app. Help. I run Windows 7 x64b sp2 w/16GB ram, My driver is 275.50 x64(If I use an older gpu driver then Boinc doesn't see any usable gpu cards, 280.xx produce reboot bsods and that leaves 290.53, 291.51 causes problems someone said over at S@H and it's been reported to Nvidia), I have a GTX285 and a GTX295 in this PC and no other PCs. I use Boinc 6.10.58 x64.

Frequency is set at 120, tried 60 that didn't seem to help or am I missing something?

Perhaps Milkyway needs a Fund Drive for a New Server? Over at Seti@home, We the Users bought the project two New HP Servers, Named Carolyn and Oscar, Oscar is the name of Msattlers deceased Cat, But then He started both of the Fund Raisers, The 2nd one has raised a little over $16,000 so far(lots of small donations are happening, S@H is having a weekly outage right now though for a few hours), Carolyn is now online as the Boinc Replica Database Server and by Next week Carolyn will be swapped with Jocelyn to become the Master, Oscar will take about another week or so to come online and then Oscar will replace Thumper, Cause that Wabbit is just about fricasseed.

Im not sure if GPUGRID supports Fermi, but I know Folding@home does(beta atleast)although its not a BOINC based project http://folding.typepad.com/news/2010/05/open-beta-release-of-the-gpu3-clientcore.html

Folding a Boinc project? Yeah, Stanford got up to a certain point and then shelved all development on their Boinc app, No reason was stated, Of course It couldn't be cause of an old Berkeley vs Stanford rivalry, It must have been for some other reason, like maybe money and/or talent availability... But then again Stanford(F@H) never did say why Folding@Home didn't become another Boinc project. Too bad really.

Yep, since Newegg is based in California, you have to pay tax.

I don't since I am across the border in Arizona.

And of course Amazon is not based in California.

And the FTB hates that(Franchise Tax Board), Too bad, So sad(not), Sales Tax across a state line is only allowed if the place has a physical presence in said state I once read and Amazon doesn't, Of course most retailers there may or may not be in California, Once an item is in the cart one can tell if It's taxable or not, I kick as little back to CA as possible as they've taken almost as much as they legally can.

Correct, I'm using a 5830, also the 4770 can do MW, too. I have a couple of those also doing MW.

I am using a 5830 as well, I have also seen someone using a 4730 on Milkyway as well.

Right now the card that I bought for $250 is selling for $240+free shipping+$15 rebate at Sapphire 5830 @ newegg.

Newegg is nice and all, But I'll stick to Amazon where a 5830 can be had for at least $239.99 + $4.74 shipping or $244.73 to My address. :D

It's one of Lists there and I would like to get 3 of them too, But not now, Maybe if the house sells or If I can't get a mortgage cause of My small income in February 2011.

ATI's HD 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870, 4890, 5850, 5870.

The 5830 does Double Precision as is listed Here. So technically It should be able to do MW and other projects that need DP as It does have 1120 Stream Processors.

HD5770 says it does not do dp.
But like allways i dis agree with my hardware.
I pay for it so it does what i tell it to do.
I know the Terrascale2 GPU knows DP.
Will find out working on bios.
ah well now i am here might as well get my RAC up a lil....

Ok I looked on the list, It's real shame though as the 5850 is almost twice as much as a 5770 card.
