1) Message boards : Number crunching : Milkyway@Home is SAD! (Message 59022)

Too late for app_config tinkering. All eleven computers have been aborted of all MW tasks. I was going to leave without making a fuss, but that's not me. I'm the black sheep that travels upstream in the thick of it.

Rosetta@Home seems interesting, but I'm not keen on spending huge money (electricity $$$) on a human problem. You see, I don't really care about humans. I'm interested in exploration/advancement only.

I'm leaving Milkyway@Home. No one at MW takes things seriously. I was crunching 8 GPU work units at once. Now I'm crunching 1. I've dicked around modifying app_config.xml, but to no effect. Things change faster then the programmers/developers/engineers can manage. Therefore, I'm aborting all MW tasks and moving on to a better funded, better managed BOINC project.

At first, this project seemed really cool. Downloads/uploads were way smoother then anything SETI@Home was able to manage and MW really took advantage of AMD video cards. Things since March have really fallen apart.

Peace!
3) Message boards : Number crunching : new app_config.xml for the new applications? (Message 59015)

Now I got WU for the new app. My old app_config.xml didn´t work, because of the changed application name.

This one works:
<app_config>
<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.05</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.05</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Awesome!! My dual GPU computers were only processing one GPU WU at a time since someone decided it was an amazing idea to change things. FAIL!

My "dedicated" Milkyway@Home computers continue to crunch AMD GPU work units, but I have since moved their cpu's over to Cosmology@Home and it's proving to be a smart decision. :)

Speak for yourself. ;)

I still have zero CPU work units. Lots of AMD GPU work units, but ya, nothing for the CPU. Might this be resolved today?

If you don't ask how will you know the answer, remember from your school days when the teacher said 'the question you are NOT is the same question the rest of the class is not asking either'! It never hurts to ask, just don't always expect an answer. I used to talk to people who were way above me in the chain of command, I ALWAYS told them, 'just because I ask, doesn't mean you have to answer'! So keep on asking, one day YOU will the one answering the questions!!

Well said. You and I would get along in person. :)

Please note, while we are now receiving AMD GPU work units, my machines, all day, have ZERO CPU work units. All 88 of my CPU cores are doing absolutely jack-shit all.

I'm just wondering. Is this a "serious" project, or is my $700 CDN per month in electricity costs all pure waste? I want something to result from all this. When a project "dies" because of a lack of work units, it makes me think no one cares to complete this project.

Just saying, it kind of feels like we are on our own and this is all a waste of money and time. :)

Copy that. Thank you for the update. I completely understand that working with computers (technology) is extremely frustrating at times. We all appreciate the hard work and time put in by the volunteer admins here at Milkyway@Home. :)

Any idea what caused this catastrophic malfunction? What steps are you guys taking to prevent these issues from arising in the future?

Mind you, they are GPU work units for my AMD video cards only. I do not use nVidia cards on Milkyway@Home.

AMD GPU WU - OK
CPU WU - Nothing since 10am my time.

Currently, it's 4:24PM my time.

I work in IT. I have for over a decade. If a server side issue like this was present with any of my clients, and I didn't resolve it right away, I would be instantly replaced with someone capable of resolving the issue(s).

What version BOINC client are you using? What applications do you have selected for the project to send?

As you can clearly see if you care to click my profile, I'm running 7.0.64. I run everything EXCEPT for N-Body work units as they are ridiculous.

All my computers are sitting idle. If this doesn't get resolved soon, I'm going to find a new project and move to it pronto.

I find this hilarious since no one seems to be doing anything to resolve this. I have many, many, many machines running BOINC projects. The eleven assigned to Milkyway@Home are all idle. My average is going down and I'm not happy. The rest of my machines doing "other" BOINC projects are happy.
