The server's down...is this for programmed maintenance ( no news brief ) or does it need the baseball bat? Cheers Chris Seejay **Proud Member and Founder of BOINC Team Allprojectstats.com** |

Early on it did this constantly, but the whole thing went out. Some labbie kept turning the switch off at night. Seems to be the same thing. Week over, turn off the switch, go home & ignore till monday. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

Those gremlins are back. Wish they would stop fiddling with things. Getting rather anoying. |

MW server (or simply the project) has become increasingly fragile, and we've seen a decreasing about of involvement from Travis over the past couple of months -- perhaps he's gotten a tad tired of the project and the research. For many months MW was my lead project (even though I have no GPU's capable of the required double precision). Of late Collatz has picked up the slack - especially with their support of non double precision GPU's (both ATI and Cuda) as long as one runs the 6.10.x client. As to CPU tasks, although the payout isn't near as rich, I've allocated more cycles to the far more stable projects -- Spinhenge, POEM and Client. So these days, when MW does one of its increasingly regular runners, I simply sigh, suspend and move on. Travis oh Travis, just where is it that you've gone to? |

I too have found myself adding collatz to my ATI equipped machines. I have removed MW from one altogether. |

As to CPU tasks, although the payout isn't near as rich, I've allocated more cycles to the far more stable projects -- Spinhenge, POEM and Client. I doubt that I will add MW back into my CPU mix because the work is increasingly hard to get and I can get decent production on the two machines I have pointed to MW to run work on the GPUs ... I will look at the numbers over time and may take one machine back off later on ... I just hope we don't screw up Collatz with too many "hands" ... :) We need at least one more ATI project ... |

I am setting my priority to 600 Collatz and 400 MW that way I keep the old machine warm for this cold spell here in the mid west. |

I just wish they would play with the server on a Monday instead of a Friday then if things go pear shaped there is someone about to sort it out.... |

I don't have the choice regarding MW -- it is either CPU or nothing. Then again at the moment, it looks like instead of requiring double precision GPU processing MW is requiring negative precision processing. As to Collatz -- I share that concern as well -- work flow from one project to another can get severe when a project goes into frequent crap mode. I wish some other projects took up the single precision GPU banner for both ATI and nVidia.

It would be nice if they did the communicate thing -- these oops, oh I was away, sick or sleeping or simply too busy -- well, I'm uncomfortable with that. I just wish they would play with the server on a Monday instead of a Friday then if things go pear shaped there is someone about to sort it out.... |

Hi all, it looks like that in lunatics are doing some development to run it with CAL, so, probably in the next few days will had something to test with our ATIs GPU (cross fingers) ;) nice POETS day Corsair Roses don't bloom on the sailor's grave |

Hi all, Well, let us know if something comes of the effort... I am always on the lookout for other GPU projects ... GPU Grid has been slowly creeping up in run times and seem not to be that interested in talking about it ... or in the fact that the pay is slipping. Sorry guys, if you increase run times from 6 to now taking up to 9 hours ... heck, some with slower GPUs now cannot complete the work on time ... I hate to say it, but another project looks like it is slipping into "lets ignore the users" mode ... |

I hate to say it, but another project looks like it is slipping into "lets ignore the users" mode Sadly you may be right, but how about this off the top of my head..... The power users like to see their credits soaring and get frustrated at having to constantly switch between different projects to achieve that. OK, why don't they all get together and have a proper crunching competition. Pick 12 Boinc projects, high or low payers, and they all crunch the designated one for a month. the winner in highest RAC/credits earned gets a yellow jersey for that leg. At the end of the year the winner of the most yellow jerseys can be announced as can the overall winner. You can have teams as well as individual awards. Works very well for the Tour de France! Crunchers will have the opportunity to demonstrate just what their kit can do across a wide range of projects and the projects themselves will all benefit. Something similar already exists anyway with various challenges, it just needs building upon. |

Another aspect of that is those of us who are NOT "power users", who are indeed here because it's the project we are chosing to support, are getting a wee bit tired of various things....... |

IT is not that I am a 'power user' I just equip my machines well. I use them for various tasks and I do require good equipment. While I am not a 'credit whore' when a project constantly cuts back on allotted credit vs run time it does put me off a bit. This is one of three projects that support ATI. This project is constantly changing the rules, and the server plays hookie more times than a high school senior. Collatz also has it's issues. It is also a hookie maniac, but seems to be getting better. At least over the short term so far I have seen. Folding on the other hand is not even an option for me(or many others), as I cannot stand the way that the admins treat the users and the rest of boinc in general. IMHO they are a bunch of pricks that do not deserve to have people crunch for them. So then it a choice of the best of the worst, like many political choices. This projects which tirelessly reduces credit, yet the same amount (or in some cases more) work gets done. But then again your lucky IF you get work as the project is constantly down. Or collatz, which seems a it more stable, yet does not pay out as well. I think I will arbitrarily pick a goal number and once it is met, pull the plug on boinc in general unless things overall get better. Actually I will choose 16 million total credit. That will at least give maybe a few weeks to see improvement. 15 million is just right around the corner and too close. |

I think I will arbitrarily pick a goal number and once it is met, pull the plug on boinc in general unless things overall get better. I have a total in mind, have had for a while. But not unless anything. Just time to stop and give that time and resource to something else. BOINC doesn't deserve me, I'm sure something else does ;) |

At one point in time my computer was among the best single-core systems out there...back in the day where K8 chips dominated over anything Intel had... If I had the $1700 - $2000 that I had to spend on this computer at the time I built it back in 2004, I could equip my machine well too... 2 job losses since that time have me at a bit of a disadvantage in the cash flow category though.
...and those of us CPU-only folks are the people bearing the brunt of that credit cut, not those of you with GPUs. You can check that out with your own hosts, particularly the Pentium D. In fact, it appears as though the GPU users credit rates stayed constant or went up some. Your RAC "dropping" is merely due to work fetch issues. If you had a steady stream of work, your RAC would actually be higher now, while those of us with CPU-only systems would still be lower. You listed reasons for your choices. I have my own reasons for mine. There are only 2 projects that I choose to give time to right now, this one and Cosmology. I can't run Cosmology on my Pentium 4 anymore due to the high memory requirements, thus on that system this is it. If things keep going south for CPU users here, that one is being retired from BOINC permanently, or until such time as Orbit gets it together, since I think searching for life-ending objects is a good cause. |
