Hey there, maybe anyone has an idea whats going wrong on my end. I recently upgraded to an ATi 4770, and ofc wanted the card to crunch right away. So I went through all the FAQs on how to get started, which driver versions, dll renames etc. However, I cant get MW to run, better say: it runs, but withhin 5 to max 20 seconds in the Workunit, i get a driver crash (screen hangs, monitor turns black, then goes up again, WU stops crunching) I am however running Collatz without any problems since minute 1, so I cant be doing everything wrong. things ive done/tried: - dlls are renamed correctly - BOINC does find my card correctly
- Driver versions ive tested are 9.7, 9.8 and 9.9, 8.12 is not possible to install, card is too new. all the 9.x versions worked with collatz - several BOINC versions, starting with 6.6.36 now using 6.10.4 since about 10 days. Same here, no client turned down collatz, but no sucess with mw. - Ive tested the 0.19g and 0.20 optimized, crash stayed the same. - I tried running only 1 WU at a time, still it kept crashing I would appreciate any help or suggestions. |

I can't think of anything you're doing fundamentally wrong, especially since your card starts crunching. However, due to algorithm constraints Collatz can not work the GPU as hard as MW does. 5 - 20s should be too short for temperature related problem. How about your power supply? The 4770 is not especially greedy, but it does need some juice (~100W max). How about stability in 3D MArk and / or FurMark? MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Besides MW the PC is rockstable, PSU is a 425w Enermax, brand new. I got a 4770 with an Arctic Cooling heatsink/fan on it, and even after hours of collatz im hardly hitting 60° - Ive never had a card that was running this cool. I usualy have around 65% GPU usage in Collatz, however with the app_info there are ways to squeeze the performance up, which brought me to 95-98% GPU usage, and hotter temps. I dont know if MW would stress the card in another way, but this is far as I get the card with collatz and its still rockstable. Games are also running fine for hours, havent played that much with the new card yet, but Anno 1404, 1701 and Civ IV do run many hours without any problems. I wonder if I should downclock the card and try MW then ? Just dont know if its worth the hassle. |

Change Boinc again. 6.10.13 seems good. from Cp's post: 6.10.4 has a known bug causing the errored out WUs (but actually doesn't explain the frequent driver crashes). You should update to 6.10.9 to get rid of the errors where the input files couldn't be read. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

My memory says that an ATI HD4770 needs a minimum 450W PSU for single-GPU and 550W for Crossfire, am I right? ![]() |

My memory says that an ATI HD4770 needs a minimum 450W PSU for single-GPU and 550W for Crossfire, am I right? I've run mine on a 380 watt Antec Earthwatts with no problem. The whole system only drew 170 watts running the X2 CPU & GPU full blast. |

Even if, thats way overrated. I have 22A on 2 12V rails, thats more then a lot of 500w PSUs offer. Also, im pulling about 160w when im having CPU & GPU on full load. This recent wattage race is like a plague, ive seen people putting a 650w PSU in a system with an onboard gpu, mkay. |

Try using W1.3 in the cmdline option. That works for me with my 4770. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! |

I've the same problem with a 4770 and a PSU of 450w, if I switch of the screen it crunch without problem or no so much, if I switch on the screen in 20 seconds MW crash (and doing some work with mouse, screen, etc.) I've installed driver version 9.8 without CCC and it's a little more stable, but still to much crashes. My memory says that an ATI HD4770 needs a minimum 450W PSU for single-GPU and 550W for Crossfire, am I right? That's the official recommendation. So a 2nd card requires less than 100 W. Now why would the first one itself eat more than that.. ;) 425W Enermax is certainly enough. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

I tried a couple of those driver versions and had similar problems. I fell back to 9.2 which may or may not be an option for you ... If it is, it may work it has been working for me for more than a week. Second option, and less happy is find a driver version that is most stable and wait till another comes out and try it, in the mean time, only run Collatz ... I hate to give that advice ... but ... they don't call it the bleeding edge for nothing ... {edit} You did not note the OS ... 64 bit OS are more tricky than 32 and the drivers tend to be less stable. If running vista or 7 try turning off some of the "glitz" features of the OS, the drag window, invisible menus and what not ... see if that helps ... |

Oh yeah sorry the OS is XP 32 bit tho. Neverless... may I present : http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=124858187 the first MW WU finished on my 4770, sure feels good! Raimund Barbeln´s W1.3 obviously did the trick, thanks a lot, I owe you one! Thx also to everyone else trying to help =) |

I think the psu race is not so overrated as you state, for a totally other reason efficient psu are great hence more power for less ;) But i agree a 350watt powersupply does run my quad with 1 hd drive, 1 dvd drive and a non distributed computing usable video card. Still i have bought a enermax 550watt for it because these run much more cool and have 80+ bronze award. We don't want the creation of heat we want it to feed your components. Sadly this enermax fails to feed my cpu so i guess its gonna cost me money again to get it fixed. Nevertheless more is in my opinion better and gladly many shops/manufactors provide tools on the website to calculate your need for a psu Its just plain simple most users would have enough with a 400+ watts psu, but i would recommend to take a much higher efficient one, the higher the award the better. How much of a psu you would recommend for a machine having 8 hd drives, 1 dvd reader, 1 dvd burner, a hd4850, 12 x 120mm cooling fans, and a quad core cpu :D Its new, its relative fast... my new bicycle |

please can you give more info about Raimund Barbeln´s W1.3 as i'm facing the same VPU recovery after a few seconds of crunching ... You need to be running the latest Gipsel app under the anonymous platform mechanism and using the supplied app_info.xml. In this file, edit <cmdline></cmdline> to read <cmdline>w1.3</cmdline> for each time it occurs. Make sure you stop and restart BOINC. Read the readme.txt file that came with the package as many times as you need to understand the various options and what they do. You need to read it carefully from end to end. There are other useful options as well. Cheers, Gary. |

The problem seems to be that the newer ATI XP drivers needed to recognize the 4770 & 4890 are buggy. I've had some success getting XP32 to work with the v9.8 drivers and no CCC but it is far from stable if used for anything else while MW is running. Win 7 (either 32 or 64) with v9.9 drivers is a much more stable solution. Again it works better for me if CCC is not installed. MSI Afterburner does not seem to introduce the same stability issues as CCC. |
