The trick of course is to do all the processing in real-time. Contestants, at least the successful ones, need to provide an answer in just a few seconds. When the software was run on a lone 2.6 GHz CPU, it took around 2 hours to process a typical Jeopardy clue -- not a very practical implementation. But when they parallelized the algorithms across the 2880-core Watson, they were able to cut the processing time from a couple of hours to between 2 and 6 seconds.

More about Watson.

Yes and the trick is to hit the button first and then work out the answer. A computer is always much quicker than a human in hitting that button.

But an amazing feat to be able to answer the question in 2 to 6 seconds.

Watson was able to respond (hit the button) immediately. Which was found out in the practice runs but they didn't work in a time delay. So in a way it was setup so Watson would win.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.
