Try and avoid temptation of hitting BOINC issues, until you have got the 8600 working the screen, and the 4850 ready for BOINC (or the other way round if you are a Gamer), and both cards with the correct drivers, and recognised by Windows Device Manager as the updated drivers showing there. Thats a stake in the ground, you know where you are then, and can then concentrate on BOINC issues, knowing the hardware is correctly set in Windows.

Hang in there - post if issues, always someone on the board will respond to help.

Don't get ANY f*****g NV-driver installed! *grrr

Not 270, not 266, not 263 ... what's up? Driver (270!) selected for 8600 GTS XP.
The older ones I downloaded the same way. And they worked fine.

Ah, wait ... do I have to connect the display to the 8600 for installing the driver?

Highly likely - verging on essential. Kinda sat on the fence a little there as you are trying to put in cards from AMD & NVidia, always causes dramas. As a general rule .... not absolute ..... yes, you need to terminate the card with a screeen or dummy plug to load the driver, without it the driver will not "see" the screen.

Just necessary for installation or for service, too?

Edit:
Yes, sometimes I'm like a little child rolling around on the floor crying for sweets at a discounter of your choice! :-P

That's a $64,000 question, you will find some will swear blind either way :)

Personally, I would attatch the screen to the 8600, load the latest NVidia driver to that, get it solid, Windows updated, registry cleaned.

Then take on the problem of putting in the 4850 drivers. For that you may also need to put on a dummy plug on the 4850, with the 8600 driving the screen. Worth a try without, but be prepared in your own mind for that. When you get to that stage, if there are issues, leave the NVidia alone, dont rip apart what you have, just post the problem of getting the 4850 to work at Windows level.

Then start BOINC hassles.

Dont get disheatened, what you are doing is always a hassle - co-existence of both AMD & NVidia on the same machine - not many do it, so hang in there, you'll get there in the end .... its just important to take it step by step as its an unusual configuration.

Well, doing it the other way around starting with the 4850, cause it's the faster card.

Well, not each day and not the hole, even that the system is normally running 24/7 instead my girlfriend's here for "visit".

Both driver-installations will break down during installation!

Edit: Restarting and plugging off 8600

You may not think this the best idea in the world baring in mind the work you
have done to date..... but ... suggest you:

- remove the NVidia card (for now)
- clean up the machine registery
- get Windows full updated
- deinstall 4850 drivers via control panel, and make sure all old bits from previous attemps are purged using Driver Sweeper . When you use that you will - at a point - see the screen drop back to 640x480, thats fine, means there is nothing left of old drivers.
- Then have another go at reinstalling 11.3 (with APP)
- When solid and working, plug in the NVidia card, reboot, and install the NVidia drivers

But, tried the drivers one by another not at the same time! :-P
Blame on those who try *ha_ha

Got the 4850 working with Cat 11.3 APP in BOINC.

Edit:
4850 working it's first primegrid WU. Thank you so far Zydor!!! *kisses
Let's get back now to the 8600. Restart and plug in?

Yup, turn the machine off, plug in the NVidia card, restart, install the NVidia drivers.

You know the 4850 is working, so whatever is about to happen, leave BOINC alone, leave the 4850 drivers alone, concentrate on getting the NVidia drivers loaded. You can use Driver Sweeper to purge just NVidia, its good at it and will leave alone your AMD installation.

Lets get back to the 8600 now.
Have to dig out the old display down from the cellar?

Be aware that the 8600 will not work at MW - the MW app needs as a minimum NVidia GT200 series GPUs..... so dont lurch into trying MW and think your install not working on 8600, you will need to try another project with that card. However we can take it to the stage where BOINC recognises it as a separate card distinct from the 4850 (BOINC will tell you in messages that it sees both card types).

When it does, you made it :) Just attatch to a project that can use a 8600.

Post as always if issues, i'm not doing a runner :)

That's clear to me. Prime, Einstein, Seti, DNETC (if it ever comes back again) are possible projects for my 8600 that I'm crunching on, too.

So, I'm back again, as I told you before. Will now try to get the NV 270 driver installed.

Edit:
ICQ, MSN or Skype would be fine :-P

Your 860 should be OK for PrimeGrid (PPSsieve) as well.

That's what I was talking about when I wrote Prime (-grid). ;-)

But, well ... ehm ... my primary card or, I think, the driver denied service after the first restart. Now working with the 8600 again. Poorly less driver, cause the NV driver does not want to install! :-(

I have an old dual P3 server, under W2K, with an ATI 7000 card in the primary graphics slot and 2 NV 9500GT PCI (not PCIE) cards crunching PPSsieve. I am using the NV 258.96 drivers.

All done. I give up!

If the last 4 WUs are done, I'm done. Installing 7 and hoping it's doing better than XP with this Problem! :_(

Regards and happy easter
