I noticed on my alternate PC I have setup that the 3870 in it no longer gets WUs for MilkyWay. It tells me in the event log Catalyst driver version is not OK for CAL application with this GPU / R600 does not support OpenCL.

I know the 3870 supports double precision operations and worked with MilkyWay for years. Was it dropped due to MilkyWay or due to new drivers from AMD? Is there any way I can get this card working for the project, or is it time to retire it?

Also, I hear the 7970M sucks for this but will it ever be supported? I notice it seems to think it is, but it continually gets computation errors.

for me it workes since opencl (witch 38xx cards dont have) is a must on MW with an app info file and the old 0.82. There was a long time now 3850/70 dont worked again on MW, but since some days it workes for me again after some bugs are killed.

But graphiccard hangs again since some days cos it got some old not functional (for 38xx cards) WUs. So i must cancel them on monday. The longer MW runs now with the new batches i think the more it must run normal again on 38xx.

Official(!) it is not supported anymore for cruncher without app info files.

The ATI CAL apps are still listed on the Applications Page, so actually a HD3800 series card should get them.

However the 64-bit app does not seem to work with the current WUs, so you have to use the 32-bit one, I have posted instructions including a working app_info file in the news thread.

I also still have the 32-bit builds available on my site.

Thanks guys, I think I got my old 3870 cruching again! The only issue is it seems to be running 2 WU's at a time... and I only have one card. So far so good though, will see if any of these get credited/complete...

That's not an issue, that increases your throughput while the higher than default values for frequency and pooling mode keep the screen responsive. I see you are using the same values as me on my HD3850 (which is a bit slower), if you don't have any issues with screen responsiveness, you might want to try to decrease the value for gpu-target-frequency and see if it's still OK for you. My GPU is most of the time at 99% and I hardly notice anything.

I currently run a 5830 on XP64, I have an empty slot and a 3850 laying around, could I run them together? Or since the 3850 requires a 32-bit app and a app_info file, would that mess up the 5830 or slow it down? Or can I interdependently change the settings and apps so they both crunch at max efficiency?

I don't think it's possible to assign different apps to the GPUs (except for running 2 BOINC clients on one machine), but the 5830 can run the CAL app. I can't tell you what performance it has compared with the OpenCL app, you'll have to try, if your monitor is attached to the 5830, you can than adjust the cmd parameters to this card and don't need to care, if the 3850 is pushed to the limit.

Your 5830 makes 1 WU in ~200 seconds, my 3850 2 WUs in ~800 seconds, so it's about half as fast. So I'd say definitely worth a try (if your PSU can take it). First you should try, how the CAL app runs on your 5830, if it's "OK", add the other card and see how that works.

Don't be surprised, if you see an error every 100-200 WUs with the CAL app, it has never run perfectly, the current WUs apparently don't make it better.

I installed my HD 3870 gfx card, dwnloaded the .082api (???) and the appinfo file and followed the directions and put both in the proper folder. Restarted boinc and it deleted all my current cpu units and it refuses to get any more for my gfx card.

What am I doing wrong?

PS I even reset the project to no avail... :(

Here is my computer specs http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_host_detail.php?hostid=444185

Post the messages for the work request. Do you have GPU processing enabled in your web preferences (in the venue of this computer)?

I have 2 computers and that 3870 is going to be allowed to run GPU work but my other computer will not.

This is what I have for that specific computer.... I looked at the "Tools" section in Boinc under preferences and I don't have anything there as I cleared what I had to start with because I had it set to 50% of processors because I didn't want my main system to run all 4 cores because I have to work with it and seeing the default and Home settings to 50% processors made sure that my main system wasn't affected and I manually did the one on the NAS unit to 100% so all 4 cores were running. When I saw that the 3870 was able to do the units I pulled it out of the closet and want to see what it does.

You are in BOINC preferences and not project preferences.

okay I'm now getting workunits.. The first 3 have been inconclusive. Is that normal? Also since I am using the .082 app, do I really need to use the anon platform? I've seen other 3870's and they show the milkyway 082 (ati14ati) application.

Guess I know the answer to that question already. Moved the anon file out and *boom* all my workunits disappeared. Its back and now I pay the price for stupidity and hope to get more workunits soon :(

Thanks for all your help....

I have straightened out my mess and I'm running with my 3870. Question I have now is it is running 1 wu and taking about 3 or 4 mintues. (I am not complaining since on the CPU it was 2 hours) However, I was wondering if there is a way or if it is even possible on this card to run at least 2 at a time. I don't know much about all this gpu stuff and would really appreciate a little help. I have 2 snapshots that I took from GPU-Z so that you can see what card I have and have a better idea of what I am able to do. The other shows the temp of 74 - 75C which is about the temp the card used to run when I was playing one of my Elder Scrolls games "Oblivion" .. I dont' know if I should be concerned or if this will be a limiting factor as to running 2 wu's at the same time.

Thanks everyone for all the help you have been on this

Sometimes it works, but not always, so I'd stay with anonymous platform, you can also increase your throughput with that.

You can try my app_info to start with:

<app_info>
 <app>
  <name>milkyway</name>
  <user_friendly_name>MilkyWay@Home</user_friendly_name>
 </app>
 <file_info>
  <name>milkyway_separation_0.82_windows_x86_64__ati14.exe</name>
  <executable/>
 </file_info>
 <app_version>
  <app_name>milkyway</app_name>
  <version_num>82</version_num>
  <avg_ncpus>0.05</avg_ncpus>
  <max_ncpus>0.05</max_ncpus>
  <plan_class>ati14ati</plan_class>
  <coproc>
   <type>ATI</type>
   <count>0.50</count>
  </coproc>
  <cmdline>--gpu-target-frequency 120 --gpu-polling-mode 4 --gpu-disable-checkpointing</cmdline>
  <file_ref>
   <file_name>milkyway_separation_0.82_windows_x86_64__ati14.exe</file_name>
   <main_program/>
  </file_ref>
 </app_version>
</app_info>

I use it for my HD3850, for your card you should be able to decrase --gpu-target-frequency without that the screen lag gets annoying. The optimal value you'll have to find yourself, just see if the screen lag is still acceptable for you and if further decrease of the frequency improves the runtimes.

I also disabled checkpointing, saves some time any CPU cycles, but you should keep that part only if your GPU is always in use and not only when idle.

How are you making a 5700 work here?! I seem to have the same gpu's you do but my 5770's won't work here!

He don't use it for Milkyway, all tasks are done by the CPU on this host.
