Hello,

After a bit of time off, I am back crunching again for MW@home! I'd been 'chasing the rabbit' a bit with SETI@home, and recently hit a milestone with credits for that project.

So it's now time to shift my GPU back to MW@home. Looking forward to getting my five million credit goal in the near future as well!

Chasing the rabbit?
Welcome back anyway :), I see your crunching with a 7850 or 7870 (pitcairn).
I've been gathering MW times in my benchmarking thread & I haven't had anyone post times for 1 of those yet. Fancy adding your card to the list? :)

If you do you'll need to run the sep. mod. fit. WUs (if only temporarily).
Are you running the MW v1.02 WUs only for higher credit? Btw I see your WU times fluctuate wildly from about 140-320s, are you running 2 WUs at a time?

Anyhow, if you do want to post a benchmark please read the benchmark requirements in the last table of the thread (I can't update the 1st post), currently it's this 1 http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=3465&postid=61406

Hello Assimilator!

Yeah, I got sidetracked with crunching for SETI, for some reason felt compelled to break the one million credit mark for that project, but am glad to put my GPU back on task with MW@home now ;-)

I currently run my GPU on MW@home, whilst running all 8 CPU cores on a separate BOINC project concurrently (Constellation).

I'm happy to do some benchmarking. A few questions:

1.) I'm currently only running one GPU WU at a time. Can you please point me in right direction to a thread or provide instructions for how to change my settings to run 2 GPU WU at a time? My GPU should be able to handle it...

2.) Did I read the results in the benchmarking thread correctly, that both Titan and 780Ti GPU have worse relative performance than my mobile GPU? I've heard that AMD GPUs perform better that Nvidia GPUs on MW@home, but this is surprising!

3.) Should I only run the MW@home WUs on my GPU and not do any CPU crunching to get a better performance benchmark?

Thanks for your input, sorry about my ignorance on these things, I have lots to learn!!

Update:

I've found answers for questions #1 and #3.

I am now running 2 WU on my GPU at the same time and complete slightly more this way than running one at a time.

I've also updated my settings to throttle back my CPU use from 100% (all 8 cores) to 87.5% (7 cores). Leaving one CPU core unused has DRAMATICALLY sped up the GPU performance.

I will do some proper benchmarking of my GPU in the coming days when I have some free time and fill you in on the results.

Cheers,
Spencer

Hi, glad you found some answers inbetween :), interesting to know you still gained some output running 2 WUs at a time (obviously don't do that for the benchmark, as per instructions :) ), I thought it was only very top end GPUs that gained from that, e.g. 7950s & upwards.
What sort of gain did you get? And did you measure it separately from the gain from freeing up a cpu core?

Re Nvidia, yea apparently it's down to the poor optimisation/use of OpenCL by Nvidia, it's not the hardware's fault AFAIK.

Look forwards to your results :) (btw don't expect them to be near the 7870 XT's score, sadly the pitcairn's FP64 aka DP power is much less than Tahiti core, & that's what MW likes).
