I have an AMD R9 290X (MSI Lightning) graphics board, capable of double-precision and OpenCL 1.2 in my machine. For unknown reasons, it does not get any work from this project. It works excellently with Folding@home and Einstein@home, so I was wondering what the problem could be?

Older server software that thinks you have a 3800 series card.

You will have to use an app_info.xml to allow it to work.

I think it should be of prime priority for any project to aquire serious compute power, shouldn't it?

Well, I think the majority of possible project comtributers would not even take the time to visit the forum to find out about such details. What a pity for the project's progress...

Well, is there a sample file available to get my R9 290X working for Milkyway@home?

Because MOST Boinc Projects take the default Server side software and then modify it to fit there own needs, some even HEAVILY modify it. When a new versions then comes out they then have to go thru and figure out how to modify it to them fit their needs, every time an 'update' comes out they must go thru the whole process again!

I think it should be of prime priority for any project to aquire serious compute power, shouldn't it?

Michael.

Not always...more computing power means more stress on all the Server side components, that can mean more costs and some projects need public money to even be in existence, MilkyWay lost their grant and is now one of those projects. They did a deal with another Boinc Project, Bicoin Utopia, to get some funds, but no one knows exactly how long they will last, at least no one unconnected to the Admins, although they DO have enough to get thru this year. I do not believe that means calender year though, I THINK it means school year as it is being run out of a University, but I just crunch here so am not positive.

Perhaps you should give him download urls for the applications as well?

Thanks a lot.
What exactly is NBODY?
Why isn't it included?
Where do I have to copy that app_info.xml file to?
Can I modify the number of WUs being processed in parallel on my GPU (it has 4 GB of GDDR5 RAM onboard) and if so how/where?

Copy it into notepad, then select "save as", save as type as "all files" and the name as app_info.xml

The file will go into C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway\

Change the count lines from 1.0 to 0.5, which will run 2 at a time or 0.33, which will run 3 at a time.

NBODY is another search application, takes longer and does not have a GPU app, plus it has some dependencies that I have not figured out.

Well, no WUs are delivered.
Moreover some syntax error is reported in the BOINC manager's notification panel:

Message 63188 - Posted: 2 Mar 2015, 11:21:12 UTC - in response to Message 63186.

Syntax error: there's a line missing.

<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit</app_name>
<version_num>136</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app>

</app>

It's much easier to see if the author had used indenting in the original file source - and if this project would finish updating their web code, so that <> would render correctly in [ pre ] and [ code ] blocks.

<app_version> <app_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit</app_name> <version_num>136</version_num> <file_ref> <file_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <app> <name>milkyway</name> </app>

Missing files: if you use an app_info file, you are responsible for supplying all the files referenced. As I said to Arkayn, it would be helpful if he could supply download links to go with his app_info example. I don't know this project well enough (and not at all for ATI cards), so I wouldn't trust my own advice even if I tried to work it out.

I'd also remove Claggy's SpaceTM from <executable />, making it <executable/> - though I think modern versions of the BOINC client should cope with it.

Well, it is all non-functional even after inserting the suggested line. No WUs are fetched, when app_info.xml is absent. When copied to the right place, the apps can't be found (same error reported as shown above after restarting BOINC):

Well, as I said last time, with app_info.xml it's YOUR responsibility to supply any needed files yourself. If any are missing, you'll have to fetch them and place them in the same folder as app_info.xml itself.

Since the main download url for this project is 'http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/', I'd suggest you try

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_windows_x86_64__opencl_ati_101.exe
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_windows_x86_64.exe
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/milkyway_separation_1.20_windows_x86_64__opencl_amd_ati.exe
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/milkyway_separation_1.20_windows_x86_64.exe

WARNING: Limited warranty.

I have tested that all four of the files referenced in the app_info.xml posted by Arkayn exist on the server and can be downloaded from those links. But I have NO IDEA whether they are the right files for your computer, or the right files for this project's current research (in particular, I see that v1.36 is current on the project Applications page, but I have no idea why the v1.20 'separation' files were recommended).

Also, please note that if the project research changes, YOU will have to make matching changes in app_info.xml and supply the files referenced. Keep an eye on these message boards, watching out in particular for any announcement of a "New Separation Modfit Version" in the News area.

Finally, my 290X receives WUs. These run very short, though. I realised completion durations ranging only from 14 to 49 seconds per WU, so far.
Strange...

Server updates, especially the longer it is between them can be catastrophic if they go bad, each project does lots of tweaks to the default software and then must go thru multiple areas of the coding in the new version to try and replicate that. MW is now working on getting funding for a brand new server, hopefully that will also mean upgrading to the latest version. BUT that won't be for a few months, at the earliest, most likely. The funding I am referring too has not even started yet, but they are hoping to start before the end of the month. If you are interested BitCoin Utopia is the place and yes it is a Boinc Project open to the public and yes it can use both cpu's and gpu's as well as highly specific asic miners. BUT not ALL asic miners will work, so if you chose to go that route please read up before making a bad choice, here is a link to the project:

If the only thing holding back a server upgrade is to integrate the latest version and merge in any local M@H changes, I'd be happy to help with that. Is the server codebase available somewhere?

It's available online as it is all open source, most projects then tweak the bejesus out of it to make it work their way. That's where all the time and being perfect comes in, we users aren't very tolerant of outages.
