Hello all, like the title said ... no clue what I am doing. I like science and I like Linux so why not put an unused server to work, but what exactly am i 'crunching'? Do we see an eventual result? I have no idea. I have gained 135 credits so far with MW but what are the credits used for? Thanks |

I have no idea. I have gained 135 credits so far with MW but what are the credits used for? WELCOME!!! Credits are simply a measuring stick comparing your contribution to others, within credits is RAC which is like a speedometer that tells you how fast you are crunching every day, RAC means Recent Average Credit. It's a complicated math formula that says todays credits are worth more than those you crunched 30 days ago so it will go up as you give the project more resources and go down as you reduce the resources available. The 'eventual result' is a map of the MilkyWay Galaxy in increasing definition, they do periodically release maps but they are not 'done' as more data comes in all the time. |

Hey Everyone !! yup like the rest of the noob posts.. no clue what I am doing - joined yesterday - was either that or learn to knit cat sweaters? - no I don't even own a cat !! Just let this run in the background and help them prove by putting my PC to work that the Milky Way is more or less like a single sock in a washing machine being tossed around ?? But will I ever be able to help answer the eternal question - where did that other sock go ?? That's pretty much it right ?? or should I be doing something else like looking for photos of E.T looking confused at Carl Sagan's record ?? wondering why we only sent them one earring when they have 5 ears ?? Anyways .. yeah good talk ?? “For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.” |

Hey Everyone !! WELCOME!! Your pc is crunching and doing very well too, if you go into your account you can view your tasks and see this pop up, along with all your tasks that haven't been moved offline yet because they are completed: State: All (265) · In progress (137) · Validation pending (0) · Validation inconclusive (43) · Valid (84) · Invalid (1) · Error (0) Validation Inconclusive just means you are waiting for a 'wingman', ie a 2nd pc, to confirm your result is accurate. Sometimes a task has 'issues' and it will go thru several pc's before the Project has to crunch it to see what the problem is but most times there are problems it is because of people trying to tweak their pc to get the max power out of it and that can cause problems with Boinc tasks because they require a high degree of accuracy. |
