Message 7449 - Posted: 4 Dec 2008 | 20:39:50 UTC

It's now been about 2 hours since new work was available. I posted this in a couple of other threads, didn't get a response, so I figured to post it 'fresh' here.

Perhaps, with the longer caches (about 6 hours compared to less than 2 hours for me), it will take folks a bit longer to notice than in the past.

Still, it is a bit of a surprise that no one else seems to have noticed/commented on this.

Perhaps it is being dealt with (guessing mode only in information outage) as the site was unavailable for 40 minutes and the servers still indicate that they are 'down for maintenance'.

Sorry about all that guys. Went snowboarding today, so of course while I'm away things have to crash. To make matters even more fun, halfway through getting things up and running, the RPI computer science network goes down for awhile :P

I think everything should be working smoothly again now. Assimilator is running happily and should be generating WUs for everyone.

I can confirm the same

No work available, and the server status shows the same has been going on since about 1.30 am UTC and it is now 08.30 am.

I hope Travis notices and gives something a kick. The work in progress count has fallen from about 30K to the current 20K inside the last 6 (or so) hours.

Nearly 4 hours later and still no new work available.

ATM the work in progress has dropped to 13,488, and the the WUs awaiting assimilation are now over 19K.

The servers certainly need to be kicked, or this may be a cunning plan to run the current crop of WUs down before splitting for new work?

Still still no work - I hope Travis didn't take a long weekend off snowboarding (rueful smile).

It wouldn't be quite so bad when this happens if the queues were a tad higher -- hint hint.

Right -- my guess is that Travis is away at the moment (workunits stopped being available late last night east coast time so I don't think folks expected a response before this morning anyway). The lad has a life and might be living it at the moment. This is, after all, a project in 'Alpha' status so bumps are to be expected.

I am sure that once Travis returns to the front we will see a reply and corrective action on his part. (I was kind of hoping to see something by now, but it is possible he is taking a long weekend).

Well, considering we just had a major ice storm in the northeast, you might want to cut them some slack.

Troy, NY isn't the greatest place in the world to drive around (or even walk) in when the streets/sidewalks are slicker than snot on a billiard ball! ;-)

If you slip and fall up around RPI, you could easily end up in the Hudson River before you come to a stop! :-D

Actually, it's kind of amazing they still have power. When we had last year's early season ice storm, parts of Troy were out of power for a week or more. Just north of the Capital District, they got one inch or more of ice (we got about 1/2 inch of ice). They've declared states of emergency in many of the counties north of Albany, and even had I-87 shut down for a while.

Read the project news guys, no wonder why we get no new work, some guys out there they return invalid or bad results and Travis i believe need some time to find the solution.

Milkyway news from 11 December 2008 : ---- > http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/all_news.php#99

It's come to my attention (looking at the results that are coming in), that a few of our users are using applications that are incorrect. ......
The searches we're running right now are highly sensitive to bad results, so this is pretty important. Either way I'm watching the users that are giving back bad results, and when our validator gets updated in the next couple days these bad results will not be awarded any credit. I'm hoping this isn't malicious action on the part of these users, and rather just a failure to double check their compiled apps.

Hmmm...

That would be a good reason as well! ;-)

I saw the post Travis made about it here in NC yesterday, but he didn't mention anything about stopping work generation at that time.

Right -- I saw that as well -- it might be the cause/effect -- but there was no comment about suspending new work generation -- might be the case though. I suppose it would be nice to get some confirmation of this -- we're in supposition mode at the moment. Glad I have multiple projects on all players.

As BarryAZ says - no announcement on new work generation.

It may be the intention that not generating new work allows the work in progress to be completed. That way all these returned results will queue with the work waiting on the assimilator, but go no further.

This way Travis can look for problem WU return results, as per his announcement here.

Subject to Travis's findings on the numbers of bad WU results returned, and then taking some action relating to preventing acceptance of these bad results. Then I would then surmise he will start splitting new work and we are then all back to crunching.

Does this fall in with what is happening, or do others know something else or speculate for another reason?

If my speculation is correct, then it will take a few hours yet to clear the work in progress as there is 8K WUs to clear.

FYI, I stopped Milky app after to know this issue, but it was futile becouse all my machines were without work since last night. I don't think that outage is due to a few wu's with errors wich were validated. We're now searching the bug and trying to fix it.

Best regards.

Good grief! I'm not being critical here, just a simple statement of current facts. Did you see me whining about losing RAC or any such? I'm just running other projects. I would rather run MW, and I'm almost out of WUs, that's all.

That's the first thing I did, and it didn't say anything about not making WUs available in the meanwhile.

Many projects run have more than one user run the same WU, and won't give them credit unless the results agree within a certain margin of error.

I don't think that happens much (if at all). I think what is done is that the WU gets sent out again and the participant from the original run whose results match the new run gets her/his credit.

What's far more common with this kind of system is one of the participants doesn't get the WU done in time, and it gets sent to someone else. The other participant has credit pending until someone gets it done on time, and right. People with faster CPUs frequently have quite a bank of pending credit.

Still no work. (:-(

Still still no work - I hope Travis didn't take a long weekend off snowboarding (rueful smile).

It wouldn't be quite so bad when this happens if the queues were a tad higher -- hint hint.

Still still still no work. Long weekend? Away for holiday?? Travis wouldn't do that, would he, when we still, still, still need work??? (:-(

I was wondering myself. At first I thought someone was messing around, but the ID is 2 above the admin one and both have the same join date.
