Well, I guess it's kinda time for a favicon vote.
All MilkyWayers, please vote now for your favorite favicon.
Here are all the suggestions from this thread:

Cori's ones:
1.)
2.)
3.)
4.)

Ice's ones:
5.)
6.)
7.)
8.)
9.)
10.)

Enter the number of your favorite icon, every vote counts! ;-)

I myself decide for #9!

Couple of questions.. What are they for and they are so small I can't tell much difference.

If number 8 is the milkway edge on I guess without knowing more that I vote for it.

What are they for ...

A favicon is used in your browser. It appears in the field beside you are seeing the adress URL (depends a bit on what browser you are using). It is also stored if you add an URL as bookmark to your browser, then you will see it besides the bookmark. And it's used beside the open tabs in the browser also.

What is the advantage of a favicon, and why do we need one?

It looks to me like an completely unnecessary bit of bling with the same worth!

Well, a favicon is no big thing but if you have more tabs opened in your browser window you can easily distingush the pages with different favicons. ;-)
The same goes for the bookmarks like DoctorNow wrote before.

If one doesn't like favicons it will even not disturb very much because it's only a small icon but for those of us who like to browse many project foras it's quite pleasant to have one.
That's why I started creating some and thankfully Ice joined me. ;-)

Really?

If you go to the SETI home page you will see a little man on an "@" sign to the left of the SETI@HOME url. It is the seti favicon. Other projects also have a favicon. I have a camera favicon for my photography site - www.antonphotos.com - which is based on my Canon EOS 40D camera.

On the Milkyway home page you will see the microsoft 'standard' browser favicon to the left of the MilkyWay url.

If you think it is unnecessary 'bling' and instead a boring microsoft favicon should be displayed here, then that is your opinion.

I prefer Cori's opinion and have enjoined seeing her favicons and creating my own suggestions (for which I have all the .ico files which the admin here are welcome to :)

I will vote for no. 3 - nice one Cori :)

2. is very similar to Opera's default icon.
9. and 10. are quite similar to the orbit@home icon.

I vote for 6.

Hmmm...

I like all the galaxy representation ones, but something as large as a galaxy doesn't translate well to icon size. ;-)

The anagram one is kind of clever, since it's easily readable/recognizable but stills gives an impression of a spiral galaxy.

Should we name the winner?
"Contest" now runs for 11 days and the last vote was almost 2 days ago.
Current standings:
Coris ones:
1.)
2.)
3.) 8
4.) 1

Ices ones:
5.)
6.) 9
7.) 15
8.) 2
9.) 17
10.) 1

Number #9 is the WINNER after this!!!

Now it's up to our admins to use it.
Would be a shame, if the icon couldn't be used because they don't know how to set it up... ;-D

Of course you can. But you might end up with a tiny black square.

I've had another go at one based on the backdrop in www.zslip.com:-

Put it up there with the url and I think it might look OK ;)

PS. Hey, Travis or Dave, how do you like these favicons? When do we see the 'winner' favicon here on the MW site? :-)))

Well, after telling the stats at wednesday there were some other votes again, now it looks like this:
Coris ones:
1.)
2.)
3.) 11
4.) 1

Ices ones:
5.)
6.) 11
7.) 17
8.) 2
9.) 17
10.) 1

7 and 9 are equal. :-\
We give it some days again, the last day to vote I now declare January, 20th!!!
Should have done that earlier. Unfortunately I have no mod status here, so I can't edit my first post or close the thread, but I hope, you all understand that!

Okay, so I declare this thread now officially closed (would one of the admins please be so friendly to do so ;-)).
No more votes please, they will not counted anymore!!!
We have an official winner:
Cori's ones:

4.) - 2

Ice's ones:
5.) - 0
6.) - 13
7.) - 17
8.) - 2
9.) - 19
10.) - 1

No. #9 made it with a slight advance to #7. ;-)

Oh, but then I expect you can't have a favicon in a subdomain, or can you?

Googling tells me that you can; put the following link in your html pages between the "head" tags.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/subfolder/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

Most web browsers look for a file called favicon.ico in the root of the site. In this case, it'd be at http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/favicon.ico, but that location can be different by adding an HTTP header described by Ice.

As for what it's for, it's for that icon that Firefox puts in the address bar to the left of the URL. I believe most other browsers put it near the same place, and they also usually go into Bookmarks.

EDIT: Small typo. ;-)

Oddly enough, I can't get it to show up. I'm using Firefox 3.1b2 on Windows 7 x64. I can get to the favicon manually, but Firefox doesn't pick it up. Playing with other browsers, Opera doesn't work, but Safari and IE8 work nicely. Same with Firefox 3.0.5 on Vista x64.

Yeah, the icon doesn't show for me either.

I'm using Firefox (3.0.5) on Win XP. Maybe I have to close the browser down and come back to force it to update?

Oddly enough, that works. Guess Firefox keeps a list of what websites don't have a favicon.ico at the root to keep from constantly hitting it, although it can cause some confusion. Opera still wouldn't show it, as that was with a totally clean cache and fresh start. Oh well, I use Firefox as my default browser.

EDIT: Heh, just looked at my earlier post, where I started off with "Oddly enough" too. Need to get out of patterns...

Fantastic! I can't believe my favicon is on every page of MilkyWay :)

Thanks DoctorNow for organizing the voting and to Cori for the original idea.

Thanks to everyone for voting, and to Travis/Dave for placing the favicon on the MW site.

And thanks to me for making the favicon.ico and winning the competition ;)

If you don't see the favicon, try deleting the temporary internet files in your internet browser and restarting your browser.

IE7;

Tools, Internet Options, 'General' tab, Delete, Delete all...,
check 'Also delete files and settings stored by add-ins', Yes, OK,
close IE7 browser, open IE7 browser, navigate to MilkeyWay,

Voila! works every time.

I've had a go, and it may well be more visible on a darker theme, but I'm not sure if it's an improvement.

Well it of course looks differently to the eye in a thread with a white background than it would with a black background. So in the thread I can see a slight improvement. Might be more in the browser.
