Today I bought the most expensive football I've ever bought. £3 for the football. I'm still waiting on a quote for the resulting broken window.

Aaargghh here we go again.....

The EU is introducing new rules from September next year that will see lightbulbs labelled in lumens instead of Watts. E.g. a 60W lightbulb will be labelled 800Lm. They say that

"This will enable consumers to make better informed choices as energy saving bulbs are being phased in. People will know exactly the output they are going to expect rather than the energy going in"

Rubbish it's nothing of the sort, it's just another swipe by Brussels trying to destroy everything Britain stands for.

I think its a brilliant idea, the terminology at the moment is stupid.
Box in front of me says "11W Energy, 60W Light". And then it states "600 lumen".
11 Watts of energy, anyone?

The US is trying to get rid of standard bulbs and make everyone go to CFLs. Saying how "green" they are. Each has mercury and must be disposed of properly. Now who is going to go out of their way to get rid of one bulb?

Another note, the 'brilliant' mayor got rid of the free yard waste pick up and wants everyone to sign up @ $50 for 6 month. Noone is doing it, all the waste is going to the landfill, which suprises them.?.

Same crap with the digital tv service switch. Only turing out to be a waste of the gvt money. (no suprise to me) The service is worse than with the old analog.

Yes. It is a little confusing. It's a power rating, not an energy rating.

I quite like the idea of having it in lumen. Although in these eco friendly times the power rating is also important.

Watts = correct but Old and Boring, Energy = New Exciting Buzzword thats Eco-Friendly, Popular and Always Used Incorrectly.
And of course we cant state the energy used, only the power.
But the box is printed with lots of Green Ink to emphasize how good it all is.

What a wonderful name, CFL which makes a lot more sense than "Low Energy Bulb".
Dispose of properly, along with the other stuff like phones, TV remotes and batteries?

Ha, chuck it in the trash.

I'm proud that I'm old and boring (and British) and you know where the EU can stick their lumens!

But, after the next general election when we will have 50% new MP's who knows what might happen......

So you'd like to go and buy "A lamp please that gives the same light output as a 60W single coil/coiled coil clear/frosted/round/mushroom/reflector glass/halogen quartz (tick all those that apply) of lower power than 60W but of undefined energy" please?
Or are you happy with "11W Energy, 60W light"?

Pardon me while I vent...

Memorial Day-fortunately we had nothing planned as my wife and I are heading into a VERY HEAVY stretch of work time but now on a day when we're unpacking from vaca and cleaning up (renovations were done while we were gone)...I've now been hit with a major allergy attack that nothing is controlling. Woke up at 10am-did some yard work with Suz and then wiped out from 1-4pm...

ugh

Ahem.

Or are you happy with "11W Energy, 60W light"?

No I am not happy at all. These so called energy efficient thingys are a load of crap! For a start most of them don't give anything like the output that they claim to replace. In practice you need to use ones that "claim" to have at least 50% more.

In practical terms this means if you want to replace a 40W incandescent bulb you need a 60W, to replace a 60W you need a 100W, and to replace a 100W you need a 150W.

I have a couple of 150W bulbs in my loft so that I can see what I am doing. To get the equivalent light output I'm going to have to replace them with 30W ones at £10 each. But I bet that the light output is nowhere near what the originals were.

Most of these new fangled things aren't dimmable anyway, and the ones that are are quite expensive and hard to find. There are reports that the light output from these is causing skin rashes etc.

Why have we gone down this route? Oh yes, to save the worlds energy crisis! What a load of crap...... How much is the average household going to save in a year by converting all its buls to the new type. £5, £10 ? All it has done is put money in the pockets of the bulb manufacturers at the expense of the general public.

Oh Yes, and don't forget that the current CFL bulbs are already old hat, as LED technology is about to overtake them. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/may/08/research.nanotechnology

Ladies and Gentlemen you've all been conned big time!!!

We replaced the old 100W incandescent with an 23W CFL - which was meant to give out 120W of 'equivalent' light - which it did for the first month or so then it has slowly gotten duller. We've had it now for 12 months and I reckon it is now giving out less than a 75W indandescent bulb, which just doesn't do it in the room it's in, especially as we are heading into winter and it is now getting dark at jsut after 5pm. The CFL was not a no-name cheapy, but a well respected established manufacturer. We paid about A$15 for it.

So what to do? For less than A$1 each I could get a 100W incandescent bulb that may last 4 to 8 months....hmmmm. Pretty simple choice really.

CFLs have just got to be the biggest con ever.

I find it depends on the brand. I've had some that don't last very long at all and some I've had in for at least 6 years.

Pretty much all my bulbs are low energy ones and i have noticed a difference with my electric bill. The light on some of them isn't very nice at all though. They need to work on that.

The new LED ones will be much better, I heard they will be able to match daylight, much nicer for the eyes than that florescent glare.

As long as the power delivery companies cant get the power to
come in the right level, but instead some times down on a minimum,
and way too often over the limit - it causes bulbs to break after only
few hours. Thats means.. its way cheaper to pay as little as possible
for each bulb - instead of paying lots of money for a "low energy" bulb that is
"said" to last for 1000 hours. It breaks looooong before that - and
im sure everyone who are part of this know it. What they chose to
"call" the energy of light doesnt do anything to what it costs. But to
sit and discuss it, and deside, and then get everyone to do the changes needed -
well.. im sure That costs money ;-) But of course, someone need someting
to do...... So hurray! lol
