1) Message boards : Number crunching : Milkyway@Home is SAD! (Message 59116)

What? I'm not leaving, I was telling him to leave and not come back. Rather than just ask for help like a civilized human being, he stomps around like an angry child making a scene, as if he's so important the project is going to crumble without his illustrious presence. LOOKIT ME!! LOOKIT ME!! I'M MAD AND I'M LEAVING!!! Great, no one cares. Bye.

No, I'm not going anywhere. This is a worthwhile project and I'm very happy to be able to contribute.
2) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU not at 100% when all CPU cores crunch (Message 59092)
Posted 25 Jun 2013 by JLConawayII
Post:
I had problems with this a few years ago on folding@home. The system SHOULD give the GPU the cycles it needs in order to run properly, but sometimes it doesn't if you have the CPU running at 100%. The simplest fix is to just leave one core free (this is normally recommended anyway). You aren't going to lose much work from that one core and it will be an overall net gain in production because your GPU won't be starving to death.

I have several of them for ATI GPU, though this machine is still working on some Einstein units and hasn't started them yet.

I have run a few hundred thousand WUs on my 5850, with very few failures. Most of those were due to system crashes or other issues. They're great cards for projects that actually support them.

Just passed 50M, and approaching 100M BOINC total.
8) Message boards : Number crunching : Collatz?? (Message 53956)

Collatz realized its own futility and imploded? Or maybe there's an Easter Bunny caught in one of the internet tubes that serves the project.
9) Message boards : Number crunching : Video Card choices (Message 53894)
Posted 3 Apr 2012 by JLConawayII
Post:
If you want a powerful card solely for this project, get an ATI card. Nvidia artificially cripples double precision computing on their video cards to an insane degree, and they do not perform well here.

There were a couple problems with some of the earliest SSD drives having relatively short lifespans, but the technology has improved considerably since then. A good SSD should last for many years without any problems.

Celeron

I have discovered your problem. You may as well just short out one of your wall sockets, that would be more efficient use of power than crunching on this thing.

If you are dropping that much on new video cards, get a new CPU. You can get a decent dual core for $60 or a decent quad core for $100 on newegg.
13) Message boards : Number crunching : How do set up my BOINC to crunch N-BODY simulations only? (Message 52006)
Posted 18 Dec 2011 by JLConawayII
Post:
I also would like an option to run n-body only on CPU. I try to keep anything that will run on CUDA or Stream exclusively on the video cards, so that CPU-only applications don't have something that could be running on the GPU instead getting in their way.

One of your WUs tried to divide by the sqrt of a black hole, and it went downhill from there.

I would like to see this done. I want to be able to process Nbody WUs, but processing anything on my CPU that can be processed on GPUs instead is inefficient usage of resources.

Mine just started crapping out as well, they'll get to 50-60% and then abort.

This is what I'm getting:
