Have had bad luck with nbody WUs. My latest, which right now BOINC shows as using 2 cores, has actually started to *increment* (after running OK almost 3 hours) the Remaining time field. Previously, large nbody WUs were getting stuck and showing no processing at all. Modfits have been running normally with no errors on win7 and Lubuntu linux with linux boinc.

I'm going to abort it and stop downloading new MWAH nbody tasks. I reported previous nbody stalls to Sid but never heard anything back.

Sidd,

Starting to see nbody WUs stall after running for a few hours. Remaining time stops decrementing but can be induced to decrement by suspending and restarting. Both computers seen with this problem are dual core WIN7 SP1 with BOINC 7.12.1. One is Intel. Other is AMD. One has GPU other does not.

As a result I am not making a few nbody deadlines. Single core WUs seem to run normally.

I think it simply means that processing on the running task(s) needs to be finished before it will start a waiting task. Note that processing can also be shifted to a task in another project. If you look under Computing Preferences/Computing, you will see Switch between tasks every [ ] minutes. I set mine to 1000 minutes and that setting generally allows the running MWaH task to finish before BOINC starts others.

That is probably more useful for folks who run multiple projects and want to work down the task queues somewhat evenly. But I have read in the BOINC forum that some applications are not so well behaved, so anything can happen in a multi-project scenario. MWaH seems to play by the rules, but I also see that it will sometimes abandon a project that is well along and close to reporting, so it can start another one with the same due date. Not sure if that is because my 1000 minutes setting has elapsed, or because the other project has more priority, or something else.

You can always suspend running and other waiting tasks to force BOINC to run a desired waiting task. That could be handy if you have a task waiting that is due sooner than others, to keep from busting the due date.

Hey Sid,

Noob here... I'm noticing (I think) that the nbody WUs seem to grab precedence from Wus already in progress, but maybe I am mis-reading my task window. I notice this when restarting computers after resting them at night.

Unrelated: I never see any transfer activity in the Transfers window. But Wus show Ready to Report, eventually disappear, and my project total keeps incrementing up. So I presume all is well. Just curious.

tnx!

chuck
