I'm getting loads of errors on Win2Kpro ...
and since I'm only getting errors on Milkyway@home and not Cosmology@home that I run conterminously so I assume it's project specific ...

But then again, it seems like I'm running a very old version of the core app. v1.21 ???

Isn't it updating automatically ? or where can I update it ?

Hm, "an alien visitor", well, I wouldn't go that far, to be a "alien visitor" as such it would have to be alive and since it's just a star, it's not alive.

But I do understand the principle, I saw an episode "The Universe - 2.02 - Cosmic Holes" that explained this principle very well !

Good info Crystallize.....however....I would "hope" Lab Staff knows all this :)

Perhaps, but since it takes so long and they don't seem to have a clue.

I'm usually solving a hard ware problem in less than two days, how ever complicated it may seem. So I thought I just give some pointers... :o)

If you turn off the "auto reboot", you should get a BSOD that
gives you some more information what it could be that causing it.

Maybe if it ran Windows... But BOINC software runs under Linux.

But there must be some debugging tools also for Linux ? right ?

What ever it is, it's obviously a hard ware error.

If you turn off the "auto reboot", you should get a BSOD that
gives you some more information what it could be that causing it.

CPU error, not very likely, unless it's due to over heating,
all BOINC projects create increased heating to the CPU,
which could explain why it crashes more often when the project is on.

How ever, over heating is a quite unusual reason for a crash,
unless you have over clocked the CPU.

The most usual error that causes the most vague and various symptoms
is actually faulty graphic cards.

The next most usual error is unfortunately the one that is the hardest
to fix and that is mother board failures...

How ever they seem to be aborting them selves now, I have nothing in the transfere tab...
9) Message boards : Number crunching : How long does it take for you? (Message 1399)

Mine are very, very fast...

370.72 for short WUs (around 6 min)
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=2028692

to 1,142.77 (19 min) for long ones !
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=2032334

Must say I love my computer ...

BTW, did you know that you get slightly better credit for the odd number WUs (the long ones)
with a ratio of approx. 175 Sec per CS compared to approx. 187 Sec per CS for the short ones
10) Message boards : Number crunching : Hard to get new work ! (Message 1267)

Post:
The best is to have a spare project to run if the WUs stuck while your at work or so. My queue runs out of work in less than 2 hours and I can't run home from work to manually get more work, so I run Cosmology at home simultaneously on my second core and it also takes over this core if I run out of work on M@H.

Hm, but I wonder what happened with Travis, he promised to be back new years eve, but we still haven't heard a word...

He could at least let us know that he have acknowledged the problem so we know they are working on it ...

As banditwolf said, abort any WU that fail to complete downloading AND abort the transfer. As soon as I did that, I got my full 20 WU.

Smart idea, how ever the WUs stuck seems to be growing in number, first time I had 1 WU stuck in transfer, next time I had 4, and now I got 6 WUs stuck in transfer ...

I have had problems with getting new work the hole day since early morning, either I get a "no work from project" or "http error"...

2007-12-31 15:41:59|Milkyway@home|[file_xfer] Temporarily failed download of parameters_generated_1199120773_2542: HTTP error

or then I get this error...

2007-12-29 12:44:48|Milkyway@home|Message from server: (reached per-host limit of 20 tasks)

I think 20 WUs are still very little considering the short WUs, I do 20 WUs in less than 2-3 hours which is less than 1 WU in most other projects...
13) Message boards : Number crunching : WU finishes but starts over again ! (Message 1157)

I got some weird behavior from WUs the latest days.

The WU gets to 100% but does stop but starts over again at 0%

How ever it only continues another few minutes before it completes ...

It's a little bit weird anyway...

See this thread for explanation.

Hm, I must say I can't find any explanation for it in that thread, just something about credits again, and it wasn't it this time, I wondered why the WUs was starting over again ???

It has nothing to do with credits at all, this project doesn't have credits hight enough to be interesting in that way...

Who can guess, what's wrong with this picture ???

... yes, the longer WU's, the less you get credit for them, it doesn't feel right,
and it's a consistent error... something that should be checked up on !

I just noticed that the credits aren't fixed anymore...

but depending on computer and BOINC version again...

Bad move IMO, since it ones again encourages tweaking etc... ...
17) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Assigning projects per core ? (Message 873)
Posted 2 Dec 2007 by Profile Crystallize
Post:
I was wondering if it would be possible to create a future so that you assign to run a
specific project on one core and another one on another core if you have a computer with multiple cores.

This is a function in BOINC that I have missed for many years now.

How ever nowadays when multi core CPUs and multi processor PCs gets only more and more common I think it's even more urgent !

But maybe that is a function you could set on your "MilkyWay@home preferences" page instead ????

Like
On multiprocessors, use at most: 1 processor
, just like on the General Preferences page.

If you say so, I'm not getting any new work anyway.
I just get a "11/29/2007 4:28:10 PM|Milkyway@home|Deferring communication 1 hr 0 min 0 sec, because project is down"

I suppose I have my self to blame for joining a Alpha project.

Not only did I loose almost all my credits after his little "Stats revision" (two third or three forth at least) )

Fair or not (I think not ... )

I have made as much CS in Cosmology@home in 2 days than I have here now,
one week worth of crunching ...

I think I leave the project until it has stabilized some and is at least believable Beta and not Alpha !

19) Message boards : Number crunching : resetting credit (Message 722)

Post:
On another note, I've upped the credit per WU to 2.0, because the average credit seemed to be closer to 2 than 1. I'll try and figure out how to fix the credit already granted.

Ok, I suppose that is ok, how ever this should not just be for the top 20 but for everybody in that case. Nobody should be favoured, No exceptions !!!
20) Message boards : Number crunching : Fixed Credit / WU (Message 721)
Posted 28 Nov 2007 by Profile Crystallize
Post:

I've upped the fixed credit per WU to 2.0, it'll take awhile for this to filter through the current workunits that have already been generated though.

Cool, I'm quite satisfied with 2CS per WU, it puts Milkyway in the middle to high range of projects.

*PS* Martin P. I'm very happy with my Dual core Conroe, that was not the point either *DS*
